This album is heavy as f*ck and will melt your face off! I always wanted to write a review that says absolutely nothing about the music on the disc (trying Googling "heavy as f*ck" or "melt your face off" and see how many times these phrases have been used in CD reviews). Most reviews that I've read of The Doors' 40th Anniversary edition of L.A. Woman use most of their inches talking about the disc's original release in 1971. With this disc having now been out 41 years, is there anyone out [...]

Earlier this month we reported that the Grateful Dead were bringing the Road Trips series of archival releases to a close with Vol. 4 No. 5 featuring all of the band's June 9, 1976 performance in Boston. The announcement about the end of Road Trips hinted at a future archival series and this weekend we got the details of what the Dead and Rhino Records have in store for us. In the first all-digital version of the Grateful Dead Almanac , it has been revealed that early [...]
Fat Beats, the record label and music distributor, used to have multiple record stores with in-store events were widely distributed om YouTube. Rhino Records once jad two shops in Los Angeles. Now both are holding pop-up shops with live shows in a manner that extends their retail legacy. And as much as many of us like to believe we're building deep communities on the web, the immediacy of such events can produce a level of goodwill difficult to maintain online. Fat Beats closed its last two stores last year, a powerful [...]

First Wave of Shoegaze begründen sollte. Doch während [...]

When I was a teenager, 70's rock bands like Foreigner, Styx, Van Halen and Aerosmith were staples of FM radio. I haven't actively listened to Foreigner in almost twenty years but those first 3 - 4 albums were such a part of my youth that I still know the words to every song on each of these albums. I lost touch with what Foreigner was doing in the mid-80's as I couldn't get into the keyboard-heavy sound that the band started embracing with Agent Provocateur (1984) and I only heard a bit of Mr. Moonlight [...]

In what seems like a plot line ripped straight out of Entourage, what if I told you that FOX Searchlight wants to make a biopic based on the seminal punk band The Ramones ? Would that be something you'd be interested in? Well, the specialty division of 20th Century Fox is looking into optioning a movie based on the upcoming memoir I Slept with Joey Ramone: A Family Memoir - which was written by Joey's brother Mickey Leigh and noted punk-scribe Legs McNeil. The [...]
Rhino Records - the catalogue arm of Warners - is having one of those restructuring that sounds like it'll wind up without much structure left. Variety is reporting up to 40 redundancies : A statement from Rhino cited a "fundamental transformation of the physical new release and catalog business" as a reason for the cuts. Company said Rhino will evolve into an entity that "handles WMG's global digital catalog initiatives, film, TV, vidgame and commercial licensing, and name and likeness representation for legendary artists." Ah, yes. Which of us didn't dream of working [...]

Wow - Stunning news for this garage rocker from Rhino Records, which has released a new 4CD compilation Where The Action Is! Los Angeles Nuggets 1965-1968 ! For anyone who has the original Nuggets 4-CD box (and the British equivalent), this looks cool as another 'lost gems' audio treat. The promo notes read: " WHERE THE ACTION IS! encompasses four discs arranged thematically to cover different aspects of the pop, rock, club and Top 40 sounds of the era. The first covers some of the most notable bands that performed in the clubs of [...]

Just the fact that Rhino Records chose to issue a 4-CD compilation on a band like Big Star says more about the label and their ability to reach out to new converts as well as old fans, like me, who will buy anything with "not previously released" or the "definitive remaster" sticker on the cover. Rhino cares about their catalog and that is why they will be here long after the majors have been relegated to clearing houses. Releasing the Big Star set in the same week as the long-awaited Beatles [...]

My kids have never known the pleasure of getting music from a 45-rpm single. When many of us were young, we usually heard music two ways: on the radio or off a 7-inch vinyl record. That was the 45: the gateway drug to long-playing albums (LPs). People gave me 45s by the bushelful when I was a kid but the very first single I ever bought was in 1967: "Good Vibrations," by the Beach Boys. With its beautiful (then; today, nauseating) colorful swirl, it was the ultimate summer song. And I played it until the grooves would no longer give [...]
In what seems to be a gobsmackingly obvious move, the major labels in conjunction with digital music retailers like Zune Store, Amazon, Rhapsody and iTunes have announced "Digital 45s" on the 60th anniversary of the 73 45 record. The big announcements are really in conjunction with Apple's iTunes Store that they are calling "D453 and use that nifty logo pictured on the left. Digging through the press-releases shows that Warner Music Group is represented by Rhino which should represent the full compliment of WMG labels which includes Atlantic/Atco, Elektra/Asylum, Warner Brothers, Reprise and Sire- so [...]

Back in November, I reported on a really great limited-edition boxset tribute to Nesuhi Ertegun- - the younger brother to Atlantic Records label founder Ahmet, and VP of the Jazz division of Atlantic from 1955-1967. Titled Hommage a Nesuhi, it is limited to 3,000 numbered copies. It is a collection of songs he produced, artists he signed and music inspired by his tenure at the label. It was a collection of some amazing artists including Ray Charles, Big Joe Turner, LaVern Baker and Hank Crawford. While it appears that Rhino Handmade may still have some [...]
Over the years Rhino Records has earned the reputation as the home for fantastic vault releases, reissues, box sets and compilations. While we've been overjoyed with the high quality Grateful Dead and Phish releases the label has bestowed upon us, their next high profile release for obsessive music nerds will come this fall when they drop the latest in Nuggets line with Where The Action Is! Los Angeles Nuggets 1965-1968 . The four disc, 101 song box set features tons of music from the LA psychedelic rock scene. [...]
Bummer! Jens Lekman caught swine flu . Smackdown! A federal judge is forcing Ticketmaster 's sanctioned-scalping subsidiary's sites to shutter . Ka-ching! A Swedish software company bought torrent trailblazers The Pirate Bay for $7.8M. Bonus! Sonic Youth will soon be taking over the satellite-radio airwaves . Party! Rhino is set to release a 63-song digital compilation of classic Factory Records tracks.
If it weren't for the collective efforts of Rhino Records , countless '60s psychedelic and garage rock jams would be lost forever in obscurity. Thanks to their various editions of their ongoing Nuggets series, these classic cuts gain new life in box set form, stacked alongside each other in an impressive array of craftsmanship. The latest entry in this series is called Where the Action Is! Los Angeles Nuggets 1965-1968 , and is slated for release on September 22nd. Four discs [...]
