Much happens on the debut album from this Santa Barbara art-pop act and it all unfolds so beautifully and colorfully that you would be hard-pressed to complain. Using slow-motion rhythms, affectionate vocals and dreamy synthesizing keys (oh and a politely inserted flute) Gardens & Villa's self titled album attempts to pull together a set of ethereal melodies. Meanwhile, the band comes up with a spellbinding collection of songs that in its best moments recalls the dancier moments of dream-pop predecessors the Human League and Mazzy Star. Recorded at labelmate Richard Swift's Oregon studio, this would explain why so many of the songs-especially [...]
Passenger & Pilot, Trainwreck Riders & Whiskerman pull into the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco.
Some thoughts from the Brandt Brauer Frick show from last Friday night in San Francisco...
The Jezabels are a great band that you have to see live and they proved it, along with Hey Rosetta! and Giggle Party at Rickshaw Stop.
Sorry for the absence of this here column last week; I got hit with an acute case of tonsillitis which definitely killed my Monday pretty badly. Felt like I was swallowing razorblades....but the good news is that it got me to the doctor to get some killer horse-pills to clear my junk up, so I [...]

Theophilus London discusses mixing indie rock with indie rap, how the internet has changed the game, and much more before hitting the stage at the Rickshaw Stop.

I wasn't really aware of the appeal of Metronomy . The band has put out some slightly impressive albums over the years and while I haven't picked up this year's The English Riviera , the general consensus leans to the positive. But paint me surprised that the band was able to sell out the Rickshaw Stop for two nights fairly quickly. Even if the Rickshaw is one of the smaller venues, it makes me wonder if they could've done the same at The Independent. NewVillager [...]
Theophilus London came to town and showed what all the hype has been about.
Metronomy lights up the Rickshaw Stop.

As anyone in the blogging world may already know, Star Slinger has broached our orbit earlier this year, quickly picking up speed and heat. Having remixed the likes of Deerhunter, Toro Y Moi, Body Language , Childish Gambino, and Air France-to name just a few-he's had made his name as electro-hip-pop artist. Yet, of course, as per usual Popscene doesn't just stack a headliner-don't forget Mux Mool and Shigeto .We haven't. Mux Mool , a member of the Ghostly International label , leans more to the creative sophistication of electronic music than [...]

Seeing Teddybears live was like experiencing my childhood imagination fuse with my present day activities. This was probably the most fun I have ever had jumping around with teddy bears. As soon as the band hit the stage, the whole crowd was thrashing around like dancing water in a hidden cove. The band was visually comical and incredibly lively (however, one of the members actually tried to steal my girlfriend's beer). Teddybears Teddybears [...]

Have you heard the new Teddybears album? Well if you're a fan of full throttle electro-rock with a plethora of special guests like EVE, B.O.B., Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips, Cee-Lo and Robyn, Devil's Music is right up your alley. It's more than just dance music, it's worth getting cranked up at your next party until the cops are knocking at your door. Or you can just skip being involved with the authorities and see the group themselves on Friday at the Rickshaw Stop with our friends K.FLAY, TIGERcat , and DJ [...]

Okay so now that I'm back from a long and much needed vacation and caught up on a few things, I'm happy to announce that tomorrow SF Popfest and us at Kata Rokkar presents our own soulful indie-pop Still Flyin' , LA's moody and pulsing Letting Up Despite Great Faults , and quickly rising electro-pop stars Silver Swans . I knew Ann Yu had more potential than she was projecting in LoveLikeFire , so [...]

Last Wednesday the Rickshaw was packed with those celebrating the release of Tim Cohen's new LP The Glad Birth of Love , as well as the tentatively labeled "farewell show" for longtime indie pop Bay Area band Magic Bullets . In recent years, new members have come into Magic Bullets and their set has evolved as a result, but, for this special evening, they also performed a few old songs. Their set opened with a hit from the early years, "Heatstroke" - which has the [...]
Tell us your most memorable birthday party for a chance to win tickets to Twin Sister and a 10" single for "Bad Street."

Wrapping up touring for its latest EP June , SF's Cannons and Clouds should deliver a great set to the Rickshaw Stop on Wednesday, August 31. The six-piece crafts a definitive example of compatible collaboration - a result just as delicate as it is formidable. Classical piano and harp intertwine with sonorous vocal harmonies, warm guitar licks, and a potent rhythm section to compile beautiful, direct emotion. " River Parade ," in particular, resonates. The Rickshaw show will also feature The Family Crest, Garage Voice, and Downhill From Here in [...]
