Three sinister gentlemen, a magician and an enormous rabbit populate the fantastical landscape of Emmy-winning director Jamie Caliri’s video for “The Rifle’s Spiral,” a new track by Portland-based indie rock heavyweights The Shins latest album, Port of Morrow (out now) Sketching the short’s narrative from any lyrics that grabbed his attention.
Director Jamie Caliri was given free reign to make the video for The Shins, “The Rifle’s Spiral” as awesome as can be. The result is an odd stop motion short narrative, that plays off like a dark Tim Burton creation. If anyone has Nintendo 3DS, you can check out an alternate 3D version of the video. It’s been 5 long years since the Shins have released an album, but with Port of Morrow , the indie-rock staple returns to the spotlight like no time has passed at all. Supported by front man James Mercer’s trademark vocals, the Shins’ fourth studio album delivers a powerful earful of soothing, harmonious tracks. The Shins are back with a new album titled Port of Morrow which will be released in March, 2012. Port of Morrow was recorded in Los Angeles and Portland over the course of 2011 with James Mercer as usual handling all songwriting duties, lead vocals and the majority of instrumentation. The album was produced by Greg Kurstin and mixed by Rich Costey. An exact release date as well as touring plans will be announced shortly. As with the dates earlier this year, the upcoming tour will see Mercer leading a Shins lineup [...]
The Shins right now are no longer the Shins they used to be—founder James Mercer debuted a new line-up (with members of Modest Mouse and Fruit Bats) last week and will be taking the band from Sub Pop to their own label All Apothecary for their next releases. He speaks now about this and Bob Dylan, Heath Ledger and Kermit the Frog, too. This interview by Daiana Feuer.
