It finally happened. Winter arrived. Snow fell and we woke up this past Sunday with about three inches of the stuff. I'm glad it didn't arrive earlier, as Friday saw me at KSVR for a four hour stint of music. The first two hours flirted with folk music and the latter half was full-on garage rock, garage pop and psychedelic pop. Much of the 10 to midnight show came courtesy Finest Kiss , who posted some great 2011 lists. Taking [...]

We're coming to the end of the good times, and the weekend is chock full of excellent shows to catch. I encourage you all to get out and support/see as many bands as possible, as that's what keeps our music community energized...which is something we all claim makes Austin great, so we gotta support it. Here are my suggestions. Punk Show @ Mohawk - A Giant Dog, OBN IIIs, Grape Street - Some of the best acts in Austin for rock n' roll of the faster sort. Quiet Company [...]

On the morning of New Years Day the Austin Texas music community lost an integral and important member. Esme Barrera was murdered in the early morning hours and the suspect remains at large. In addition to being a key part of the Austin music scene, she was a Mentor/Counselor at Girl's Rock Camp, and an assistant teacher at a local elementary school. Ringo Deathstarr is raising funds for her family to cover expenses. With a donation of $1 to http://forouresmeb.blogspot.co m/ . ![[Listen] Ringo Deathstarr: "Sailin' On" (James Brown Cover)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3965438_lg.jpg)

I waited till 2011 to finalize my albums list - all my lists - partially due to laziness, being busy, the holidays... but mainly because I'm not sure what the hurry is. I don't do this for the web traffic (clearly), so I gave myself a little more time to decide than usual. (And as long as this goes up before the Village Voice' s Pazz n' Jop, I don't feel delinquent.) So here's my list, the top five or so have been a lock for almost half a year, but the rest were in flux right till I [...]

A year end albums list is kind of a strange thing, especially when it's one person compiling it. Since this blog is a committe of one, it can become quite capricious. In all likelyhood I wrote about some records this past year that I was overtly enthusiastic about at the time. Now the end of the year rolls around and some of those records are not on the list. "What gives?" you might ask. It's hard to remember which label flew me to Tahiti and which one comp'd my CMJ this year, so I may have forgotten to include a [...]
It was an OK year. Nothing more, nothing less. Timber Timbre and their album "Creep On Creepin' On" was without a doubt, the album I've listened to and seen performed live the most all year. Taylor Kirk's dark, swampy sound speaks to me. As for the rest of my top 5, these albums will be listened by yours truly for years [...]

And here we are at the end of 2011. If you had told us a year ago that the things which transpired this year were coming, we would not have believed you. While for much of the year, and much to our frustration, music had to take a back seat to real life, that only increased its importance to this writer. Cross-country flights soundtracked by Broken Shoulder . Getting up to speed mornings listening to Rival Schools . Quiet weekends with J Mascis , summer vacation with Algernon Cadwallader and The War On Drugs [...]

01.Easter - Somethin' American This might be the first time such an unknown song by such an unknown band has ever been given top spot on any of my end of year lists, but they were absolutely brilliant live when they played up here in September, and this song is just fantastic, as are the other two songs on their Soundcloud page. It's less lo-fi than a lot of the DIY stuff I've listened to this year, and the squalling solos which tease Easter's songs to an end evoke loads of old school US indie music. This gives quite [...]

Yep, it's another one of those end of year poll posts, except this time round I decided to ask the folk that work in Scotland's four most influential independent record stores. The employees of LoveMusic, Monorail Records, Avalanche Records and One Up Records, were all set the task of giving me their favourite album of 2011, plus possibly write a little bit about why it was so special to them. In the end it didn't quite turn out as well as I'd hoped, first off the guy from Monorail didn't reply to my emails, the Love Music chose their top [...]

Well, rock fans, it was a really strange year, one in which we personally and professionally -- and, yes, even to a certain extent here on the blog -- accomplished a great many big things. And all the ups and downs -- transcendent live sets on local stages, solitary post-midnight walks across frozen parking lots in the midwest -- had their soundtrack. Below are our picks for the 10 best songs of the year. These, as usual, are largely determined by our raw ITunes playcounts, although we also gave a little more weight to recent releases that would have been [...]

[* We accidentally deleted this post from late December; here it is in all of its glory once more. -- Ed.] Well, rock fans, it was a really strange year, one in which we personally and professionally -- and, yes, even to a certain extent here on the blog -- accomplished a great many big things.

Ringo Deathstarr 2. The Dandy Warhols 3. Natalie Portman's Shaved Head 4. Michael Jackson y las Sacerdotisas de Baal [...]
