Kamins went on to work as a producer, and A&R guru, working with Talking Heads, Sinead O’Connor, Beastie Boys, UB40, Ofra Haza, and many others. Toward the end of his life, Mark [...]

Photo of Infinite Self by G. Infinite Self by Stuart Wilde Death is a part of life and yet, I am having a hard time believing that spiritual guru Stuart Wilde has departed from this earth. Several websites have confirmed the news, so I know it to be true. On May 1, 2013, Stuart Wilde suffered a fatal heart attack in Ireland. While I never met Stuart Wilde, I have been a fan and admirer of his teachings for a very long time and [...]

Photo by G. Taylor Mead and Geoffrey Dicker Sad news! New York artist, poet and former Warhol Superstar Taylor Mead has died at age 88. Taylor was a great lover of art and you'd often see him in Downtown Manhattan supporting his friends and local artists. He could also be spotted at the Bowery Poetry Club reciting verse. I can't believe we won't be seeing him around anymore, but his spirit will live on forever in New York. RIP Taylor. [...]

On Wednesday, April 17, 2013, it was made public that Peter was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The following message was posted on Peter's Facebook page by his friend and manager: "Dear Friends and Loyal Fans, As Peter Rauhofer's manager and dear friend for many years, it is my sad duty to announce that Peter was rushed to the emergency room several weeks ago. After confirming that Peter had a seizure, further testing has revealed a large brain tumor, something that has gone undiagnosed for quite some time. At this time, Peter's family is working closely [...]

I clearly remember going to see Two Lane Blacktop in 1971 and being completely enamored with the film. It featured two of my favorite musicians, James Taylor and Dennis Wilson, both of whom were quite laconic in the movie. I myself was a man of few words back then which you might find hard to read if you are frequent reader of this blog. It also didn't hurt that the movie was all about fast cars.....back in the late 1960s early 1970s I was absolutely muscle car crazy. For those of you that aren't from the US, I don't [...]

There was only ever one option for this week's Sunday Slaylist - a tribute to Jeff Hanneman, guitarist with Slayer, who tragically died this week aged just 49 years old . The influence of Slayer on metal cannot be understated - Hell, we pretty much named this entire feature in tribute to Slayer . As one of the principal songwriters in Slayer (just go check out the writing credits of..oh...well... pretty much every Slayer album if you don't believe us), it's fair [...]

RIP GEORGE JONES 1931-2013: Man not much we can say but this man had what Elvis did not. He lives a long ass time. He was a man in full. We was the original rockn-rolla. Hell raiser. Drinker. He was known for his country hits but in reality he was the king. He was a badass mother-fucker. Sometimes you just need to pause and think what the hell have I done that would compare to his awesome catalog of music. Here's a few of his greatest hits from the Classic Years: Don't [...]

American music lost one of its true giants with the passing of George Jones. I'll have some thoughts on Jones, one of my favorite artists regardless of genre, in a few days.
Bad news for fans of the Universal City event venue. The Gibson Amphitheatre AKA Universal Amphitheatre will be saying goodbye as of September of 2013 at the end of their lease. The venue will be making room for construction of...

Richie Havens, folk legend, died of a heart attack at the age of 72 at his home in Jersey City, New Jersey, on Earth Day. Arriving by helicopter, Havens opened the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. Due to a number of scheduled opening acts being stuck in traffic, Havens was asked to stretch his set to three-hours and, after running out of material, improvised the old spiritual "Motherless Child" which morphed into a powerful chant of what would later be known as his song "Freedom." [...]

Richie will always be known for his opening performance at Woodstock. He was not scheduled to be the opening performer but when the first four schedule performers had trouble reaching the festival he was asked to play in order to buy time. In an epic performance he played for almost three hours straight, eventually improvising the song Freedom on the spot having played every other song that he knew. It was a wonderful performance and one that made him famous. Here is an interview with Richie from the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. [...]
I didn't know Richie Havens , but I certainly understood his music. Born years after his eternal performance on the stages of Woodstock in 1969, until this moment I have never known a world that Richie didn't already occupy with vibrant song. His rhythmic guitar, his percussive playing and bellowing voice asking for "Freedom" will continue to be one of mankind's finest recorded performances.. As a child watching that set for the first time some years later, I recall thinking that Richie Havens owned the entire world. You couldn't help but feel that way - watching [...]
Photo by G. Richie Havens Sad news in the music world. First we learned that Christina Amphlett of The Divinyls passed on this morning and in the evening, we learned that folk singer Richie Havens has died. I saw Richie perform once as part of a birthday tribute to Pete Seeger, which is where the above photo was taken. I hoped when they announced his name that he would perform "Freedom," which was one of my favorite performances from Woodstock. I got my wish and as [...]
