In a quest to discover the relationship between musicians and their cities in America, London's Black Cab Sessions rolled through the States in 2010, traveling from Athens, GA up to New York, NY and stopping in Philadelphia along the way. The intimate live-session curators expanded on their M.O. of "one song, one take, one cab" ... Continue reading

House of Blues just unveiled their annual late night Jazz Fest schedule and once again it is slam-packed with familiar festival favorites, a few newcomers, and a couple of spectacular second weekend Superjams up in the friendlier, darker and tinier confines of the Parish Room. Last year's George Porter Jr./Marco Benevento/Brian Stoltz/Adam Deitch 2 a.m. [...]

Robert Randolph and the Family Band - Nobody The 13-string steel pedal guitar phenom Robert Randolph can flat out play. Randolph was trained as a pedal steel guitarist in the House of God Church as a child, and his dynamic instrument is front and center in all the band's music. Think Duane Allman meets Muddy Waters and B.B. King . I've been fortunate enough to see Robert Randolph on a number of occasions and in all different settings - most recently Saturday night at the Bluebird Theater in Denver. Randolph is [...]
We've been watching the proliferation of music festivals in Florida over the last few years with great interest and this morning a new player has emerged in the form of the inaugural Orlando Calling festival. Produced by Festival Republic, who organize the Reading and Leeds festivals in the U.K., Orlando Calling features a genre-defying lineup that should appeal to a wide range of music fans. The event will take place at the large Citrus Bowl football stadium in Orlando on November 12 -13. Saturday (November 12) and Sunday's [...]
The mysterious is over; the lineup for the inaugural Orlando Calling music festival is here. Set to take place November 12-13 at Orlando's Citrus Bowl Park, the festival will feature an eclectic mix of modern rock and classic rock, hip hop, R&B, and country, with acts like The Killers, The Raconteurs, Pixies, The Roots, Kid Rock, and Bob Seeger & the Silver Bullet Band topping the bill, according to Billboard.com . Billboard reports that the festival's first day will lean toward a more modern sound. Joining The Killers, The Raconteurs, Pixies, and The Roots will [...]

Governors Island's bill also [...]
Before Nateva Festival came on to the scene last year, Maine had like one festival to its name - The Maine Lobster Festival - which, if I understand correctly , is some orgiastic dionisyian hellscape with literal tons of delicious crustaceans at the ready to consume. But the Nateva Music & Camping Festival will not be dwarfed by some coastal food frenzy. And because the 2010 inaugural Natvea proved, all in all, a success , the fest is returning for another year and another round of jam-heavy headliners. Watch your back, you lobster-loving fucks, cause Natvea's crunchy [...]
The festival gods spoke again last night, and the New Orleans Jazz Fest has announced its crossover rich lineup for this year's festival. The festival as always will take place over two weekends, April 29-May 1 and May 5-8, and will feature a ton of acts both jazz and non-jazz related. For the modern, indie fan this year they have the great Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Wilco, Mumford & Sons and The Decemberists in the lineup for your pleasure, as well as many more. For the non-indie, non-jazz fans they do have Bon Jovi (?). Other [...]
Guess it's a week to talk about comebacks from the world of hip-hop, as Lauryn Hill has announced a ten-date Northeast tour that will kick off at the Higher Ground in Burlington, VT on December 18. The semi-reclusive Hill, who is rumored to be working on the long-awaited follow up to her seminal debut The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill , emerged this past summer to play a handful of shows as part of the Rock The Bells tour to favorable reviews. Hill will focus [...]

"One song, one take, one cab"—that's The Black Cab Sessions in a nutshell. Stuff as many members of a band (and their respective pieces of equipment) as possible in the back seat of a cab, then give them one shot at recording a song as the vehicle makes its bumpy way through town (usually the streets of London). The online video series—which has has been going on since May 2007—has featured performances by everyone from Weezer and Brian Wilson to Grizzly Bear and St. Vincent. According to The Black Cab Sessions Twitter , they arrived [...]
Filed under: The Hit List The current retro movement in the best songs of 2010 is a win-win: Oldsters who had declared music dead can now listen to new songs, making them look less uncool to their kids. Meanwhile, young folks can use new artists to discover songs from the past, which means they might finally learn who Al Green is. But even the [...]

Show Review // Robert Randolph and the Family Band with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals // August 11, 2010 My dear Vagabonds, The commercialism of amazing artists really grinds my gears. I say this, because the radio ruined my night last week. Arriving at the Fox Theater in Boulder last Wednesday, I was excited to see two of my favorite acts take the stage. I’ve seen both Grace Potter and the Nocturnals as well as Robert Randolph and the Family Band on many occasions and expected nothing less than the best [...]

Fronted by a guy who played a instrument that was more widely known by country music fans, Robert Randolph & The Family Band burst onto the jam scene in the early aughts by earning a reputation for playing incendiary live shows that incorporated the traditions of sacred steel music with groove-based rock, funk, gospel and R&B. Signed to Warner Brothers Records, the band's first two studio albums - Unclassified and Colorblind - didn't quite capture the magic of what endeared the group to so many live music fans with a seemingly [...]
