A little 4 minute 25 second sort of newsreel report on Vince Taylor. Not sure of the exact date but I've never seen footage of him with a haircut like that, so I'm guessing it's well beyond his "Rocker" heyday, closer to the end of the 60's. It's all in French so I don't know what he's saying, but there's some nice live performance footage and the 60's French teens are always ultra-cool.
Not going to lie, but I totally forgot about the Islands and their fun but more quirky music. They're coming out with a new album, A Sleep & A Forgetting , in February and just recently released the track "Hallways" off of it as an early taste. It's a piano-driven, rockabilly-enchanted tune that invites you to join together like a singalong from the Beatles. Islands - Hallways by antirecords

One of the mainstays of early rock and roll was the tearjerker song, especially the kind that spoke of a sadly departed lover. There were plenty of memorable ones around, including "Teen Angel" and "Tell Laura I Love Her," but one of the earliest - and best - was "Endless Sleep," a million-seller for Jody Reynolds in 1958. Reynolds was born in Colorado but raised in Oklahoma, where he grew up surrounded by country music and inspired by Western swing legend Bob Wills. By the time he reached adulthoo d in the early 1950s, he was a proficient [...]

Dan Sartain and his 50s style greased back rockabilly swagger and pencil-thin mustachioed menace have long been favourites here at Mad Mackerel. Therefore we are looking forward immensely to his forthcoming album Too Tough To Live which crams 13 tracks into 19 frenetic minutes of rock'n'roll. This is the first track from the album, the 80 second long Now Now Now featuring ex- Go Go Jane Wieldin. a And while we're at it, here is the video for Nam Vet . [...]
Elvis caps his remarkable comeback Recorded in 1970 and released in 1971, Elvis Country was the culmination of a remarkable career resurrection. Starting with his 1968 Comeback Special , Elvis went on to reel off the brilliant From Elvis in Memphis (and the second-helping, Back in Memphis ), the smartly constructed Vegas show of On Stage , and the studio/live That's the Way It Is . So Barry-Sean was in his parents attic over Christmas sorting some stuff out and discovered some old mixtapes that we used to listen to a lot - this was one from 1987 that B-S has modernised into a digital playlist on his iTunes. Even though it is nearly 25 years ago - there are some cracking tunes on there from many of the cream of that era's indie-crop, and perhaps some that haven't stood the test of time quite so well ( Fields of the Nephilim , two tracks from the Alarm ...). We picked this up via the excellent Piaptk Blog and figured it had to be worth a repost. The Great Lakes are a psych-Country act from Brooklyn who we posted about back in the summer of 2010 when they released their lovely album Ways Of Escape . That was a record of introspective folk and country tunes, and while this is in the same vein, there is a healthy chunk of rockabilly rhythm in there too. This is a previously unreleased track and it is a crackerjack. The band have a new album [...]

Vagabondage is a Bay Area, California based folk-punk band that was born over nachos and wine on a tiny stage in an empty theater in San Francisco's Mission District. They have been getting people up on their feet, yelling, drinking and singing along to their songs since 2008. Their new album was conceived at San Francisco's Secret Studios over a bottle of cheap bourbon - Whiskey & Starlight is a combination of the anecdotes, tall tales, and memories shared over countless empty glasses in innumerable shadowy dive bars. They describe it as being "full of [...]
