Is this the most anticipated Irish debut album of the last five years? It certainly seems so. Live broadcasts on Phantom, BBC Sessions, high visibility UK support slots, a buzz here and the UK, album streams , magazine articles, Number 2 in NME's 10 Hopes of the Near Future, blog posts galore, forum debate, regular radio rotation. Everyone is weighing in with their own expectations of the four-piece's debut so I suppose I will too. In a review I wrote over the weekend due to be published in State very soon [...]
I've always had a soft spot for David Holmes. In fact he was one of the first leftfield artists whose discographies I explored deeply alongside people like DJ Shadow. Everything he has done has been superb. From Let's Get Killed to Bow Down to the Exit Sign ('69 Police' is still one of my favourite songs ever) to the Essential Mix compilation to The Free Association and beyond (though I have to admit I'm less familiar with his film soundtracks). His new album The Holy Pictures is inspired by [...]
I remember hearing about Broken Social Scene doing a soundtrack last year but never followed up on it. I have my hands on it now and It's rather good. The film in question stars Ellen Page and concerns her character searching for her little brother (who thinks he's a dog) in the dark underbelly of a city (Trailer here ). The soundtrack has some exclusive Broken Social Scene songs as well as the strange Patti Smith cover below with Liz Powell on vocals. They share the tracklisting with some impressive material from The [...]
Barry is back with more info and mp3s from the Bees camp. I only came across the latest installment from The Bees by accident and I'm very surprised I missed it. Their latest release, The Sound Selection is not a studio album but an eclectic 18 track mix album which is pretty much a journey through their influences with two crackers of their own thrown in for good measure. The term eclectic is often overused but in this case it is almost an understatement with gospel, funk, soul, blues, hip-hop, reggae and [...]
The first song on King's of Leon's new album Only By The Night is brilliant. It sounds spooky and atmospheric, a gothic dystopia. Caleb mentions the last ' 2000 years chasing paganist whores ' The rest of the album doesn't live up to this but it's still good. The other standout is ' Use Somebody '. Discuss. You can download it @ Pretty Much Amazing .

Last night in Whelans was awesome. €14 for 4 bands, roughly 200 minutes of music. The Vinny Club instigated a robot train and utilised a Guitar Hero joystick to generate 8-bit sounds. R.S.A.G aka Jeremy and his virtual band was superb as always, like a man with ADD that makes him bang drums incessantly. A total pleasure to the ears. Ponytail meanwhile, jeez... mental. The singer was possessed. Just look at this: Big shoutout to everyone I met there last night including bloggers Tom , [...]
In an effort to shine a light on the unknown artists and songs that pass through the mailbox of a music blogger, this semi-regular series will pick the artists most deserving of attention from nialler9 readers. Au - 'Are Animals' You may have heard of Au , an experimental pop band from Portland. This song sounds a little like Animal Collective I'll admit, but do AC have a 20-strong vocal chorus? No? Well Au do, I shit you not. This is from their album [...]

As I was in London on Friday so I missed The Death Set that night in Crawdaddy. As did most of you it seems as friends told me there was 30 to 40 people there. Such a shame. The Baltimore band play on the floor a la Dan Deacon which is fitting because they sound like a punk band playing his tunes. Their album Worldwide comes highly recommended from me for its frantic electro/punk energy. The Death Set - Intermission The Death Set - Around [...]
Friday sees the launch of You're Only Massive and Queen Kong's rather good collaborative mixtape Dot Dash in the Project Arts Centre . Doors are at 8pm and the show begins at 8.30pm. Admission is €12 which includes a free silver 123 record. Oooh fancy. To further encourage you to go to the gig, YOM's Maebh has shared this undeniably cute video of a 3 year old reciting the chorus from 'Do A Runner'. Explanation and flyer after the jump. Here be the original track from Dot [...]

Look at that press shot. How can Ponytail not be good? Like a giddy Angelica Pickles fronting a frantic, spastic mess of an art-rock group, Ponytail's sound is decidely naive and a little freeform. No bass player. Two guitarists play riffs which don't seem to pay attention to each other yet work analogously together. People have compared them to Deerhoof but that's a little glib in my estimation. OK, here's the thing though. Vocalist Molly doesn't actually sing real words . Instead, she shouts, screams and yelps, [...]
