Allow me to share an anecdote from my last trip to Rome. The simple continental breakfast provided by a budget hostel was offered in a windowless room near the laundry facility. The lights were automatically extinguished every time someone exited the room, requiring a guest to get up and manually flip a switch. The Japanese and African travelers pretended to ignore the inconvenience. The German and English tourists muttered amongst themselves. A Californian couldn't restrain herself after the tenth blackout in about twenty minutes. "F**king Italians," she screamed. [...]

When Reach insistently repeats the refrain "Hip Hop Is Alive" on his new album Live at RecordBar , he isn't celebrating the latest success of Wale or 2 Chainz. Reach is a true believer in the original purist ideals of hip hop. The new release- his fourth full-length album- serves as affirmation of Reach's principles. Supported by the funk/jam band Mouth , DJ Ataxic and vocalists Schelli Tolliver, Sausha Brooks and Vance Ashworth, the well-recorded collaboration brings out the best in each participant. Live at RecordBar [...]

I'd characterize my viewing of the television series Love and Hip Hop as a guilty pleasure, but I don't really enjoy watching the reality show. Yet I can't tear myself away from the shrill drama perpetuated by misguided rappers and their farcical love interests. The supposed real life of Joe Budden looks miserable. I've always liked the guy and I'm a big fan of his supergroup Slaughterhouse. Unfortunately, nothing on Budden's new hit album No Love Lost is remotely as good as the [...]

Review - Bret Michaels Rockfest 2011 @ Meskwaki Casino - Tama, IA - 8-27-11 Bret Michaels Rockfest 2011 @ Meskwaki Casino Concert Review Rockfest 2011 was a totally last minute show. I got there just in time to catch Bret Michaels ' entire set, but missed the other acts that were on the bill. The Meskwaki Casino shows are held outside on a superb and large stage, that can accommodate pretty much any big show. The weather was perfect, and I love shows outdoors in the summertime. I was [...]

After last year's filthy, muddy and miserable rock festival at Liberty Memorial, I vowed the next Monday at work that I was done with 98.9 The Rock's Rockfest. "Fuck that mess. I couldn't even w... Continue reading "A Rockfest veterans's take on Kansas City's biggest one-day festival" >

News Floridian death metal veterans MORBID ANGEL made their live debut with the band's new drummer Tim Yeung (DIVINE HERESY, ALL THAT REMAINS, NILE, HATE ETERNAL, VITAL REMAINS) on March 5 at the Scion Rock Fest in Pomona, California.

photos by Adam Murray and Genie Sanchez , words by BBG Morbid Angel Two outdoor tents, a club, and a theater hosted 26 bands. Perhaps by design, the premises lacked alcohol (except for the theater). So bad behavior was scarce. Fans happily bounced from venue to venue, queuing for some bands (Wormrot, Floor, Atheist, Obituary, Morbid Angel), and eating burgers from the Grill 'Em All trucks. To order the Witte Burger (beef, bun, cream cheese, [...]

. . . Scion Rock Fest 2011 was a logistical marvel. My complaints were few: the long line at will call hours before the fest; the setup that had Immolation sounding like Darkthrone; the fact that my backpack was allowed into only three out of the fest's four venues; the fact that scheduling Morbid Angel at the same time as Municipal Waste and Anaal Nathrakh meant that basically the entire festival would try to see Morbid Angel, filling that venue to such capacity that eventually even all-access passes were denied. These were annoyances, not dealbreakers. I [...]
