For those of you not keeping track, Chicago Mixtape - the weekly e-mail'd mix of great Chicago bands from Rock Proper's Casey Meehan - has been an overwhelming success. So much so, that the Chicago Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club , who've been providing athletic, educational and arts programs for more than 1,500 boys and girls since 1931, asked Chicago Mixtape to curate their annual carnival/concert on Sunday, July 10, at Paul Revere Park, located at 3900 N Rockwell Ave. The end result is a benefit [...]

Spring is in the air, snow is melting on the ground and pedestrians are spraining their ankles in newly formed potholes. Anyway, let's get on with our picks for this weekend's top shows, shall we... We've got In Tall Buildings at Metro , Tyler Jon Tyler at The Hideout and Nomo [...]

" -- Jim DeRogatis, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES Chicago garage-rock/alt-country band Jonny Rumble are coming to NYC as part of CMJ Music Marathon later this month. [...]
I don't know if you've ever been the front man for a seven-piece, working-class orchestra, but I'll tell you what Sally: It ain't no mayo surprise on flatbread and it ain't no sack race though Ma Winslow's meadow. No, it's not like that at all. It's bedsores from bar stools and cliff-hanger endings, it's kisses from sailors and bathtubs of fix-a-flat. It's great for morale but it's hell on the drapes. All those sticky endings make for great lyrics spun from love lives that mimic russian roulette. The Marigny Shovel [...]
Preparing for another hopeless blind date, I was at another dirty cash machine, grimacing. Staring at bright green letters blinking on a dark green screen. "Processing." Blinking over and over and over. I've gotta have $60 left. If not, me and matilda041 will be having lint sandwiches and rainwater from a rusty can on our first date. Processing.. Dang, so this is how life is spent! Processing… Whether you're at the dentist or wrestling though an awkward first kiss, the carousel is always spinning. There's a lot about those in-between moments on To the Other Side; [...]
Jay Bennett was an extraordinary individual—generous, kind, wise, and impossibly creative. We deeply mourn his passing and miss our friend so much. Rest in peace Jay. During the Mardi Gras after Katrina, Steve's dog nearly took off my right arm. I had returned to the crescent city for the first time since the storm had nearly wiped her off the face of the earth. After months of staring at the TV monitoring the struggling vital signs of the fragile city I loved, I had come to pay my respects, survey the damage and (of course) watch some off-duty circus clowns spit fire under the viaduct to the rowdy crescendos of a punk rock brass band while costumed revelers rammed costumed shopping carts into each other. We here at Citizen Dick HQ get a lot of music crossing our desks and filling our headphones and sometimes, despite our very best efforts, we just can't get to everything. Speaking for myself, one of the first things that tends to determine the importance that I assign to some new releases is whether it is a full-length effort or not. Call my biased, maybe even foolish, but I tend to hold the full-length efforts in higher regard, or at least give them fuller attention. Even I, however, know that doing so can occasionally be a stupid mistake, so periodically [...]

Only Saturday, Casey Meehan, one of the guys behind Chicago-based digital music distributor Rock Proper , spoke excitedly with Jay Bennett about a venture through the fund-raising website Kickstarter to finance a vinyl pressing of Bennett's 2008 solo album, "Whatever Happened I Apologize." Meehan, like many artists on Rock Proper, had recorded his own music at Bennett's Pieholden Suite studio. The two also discussed how to promote Bennett's next album, the almost-completed "Kicking at the Perfumed Air." That night, Bennett, 45, died in his sleep. Cause of death has not been determined, but [...]

Jay Bennett , the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who played with Wilco for the three-album stretch including "Being There," "Summerteeth" and "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot," has died in his sleep at age 45. Bennett, who in late 2008 released his latest solo album "Whatever Happened I Apologize" via the free download digital label Rock Proper , was preparing to have hip replacement surgery, he told fans in a MySpace post in April. Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times has more details. Bookmark It [...]

Dispatch from the Midwest: Casey Meehan [left], the Chicago-based artist who launched the online music distributor that offered free downloads of Jay Bennett's album last year, today releases the album by his new project, Jitney. The album, "86-300," is available for free at Rock Proper . Jitney's album — which is quite a tour de force — was inspired by two long years Meehan spent as a graveyard-shift taxi driver in Chicago ("86-3003 was the number on his chauffeur's license). It's one of 12 albums Rock Proper is offering for free, with three [...]

Former Wilco guitarist and blip-maker/knob-turner Jay Bennett has announced the delay of the release of a new album called 'Kicking at the Perfumed Air', and in it's place released what he describes as "a very personal and concise 10-song album called 'Whatever Happened I Apologize.' After debating back and forth, I have decided to release 'Apologize' first. I am somewhat at a loss for words as to explain why I arrived at this decision, save to say it's just one of those lonely and private choices one sometimes has to make-in other words, it just felt more like the [...]
