Two notable dates passed in Hip-Hop this week. Fans celebrated the 10-year anniversary of Jay-Z's seminal Blueprint album. Meanwhile, Nasir and friends - including Jay - gathered to mark the QB MC's 38th born day . Seeing our legends and their work age so gracefully is enjoyable...but remember when Hova & God's Son weren't on such great terms? For years, fans and Stans chose sides when discussions of Jay-Z and Nas came up. Cell's comment and words from a friend ("I got checked at the bus stop [...]

Unfortunately "Rock the Bells" will not have a Boston this year. The Sept. 24 show was cancelled today. Guerilla Union's Chan Weisberg released a remorseful statement today about the concert. "We are very disappointed that our Boston Rock The Bells Festival stop had to be cancelled this year. Unfortunately, we will not be able to execute the festival to our standards and apologize to the fans who have supported Rock The Bells and quality Hip Hop. We've had many challenges with this show including numerous scheduling conflicts, bad weather and logistical challenges but hope to come [...]
Oof. Last week, I wrote that it was bad news for hip-hop fans that the Boston Rock The Bells festival was postponed two weeks. But that was nothing compared to this: the entire show has apparently been canceled. The festival website posted the announcement this morning with the note that tickets will be refunded . So I guess all's not completely lost, right? Sorry, New Englanders, I can certainly feel for you, especially after hearing how great the show in New York City was two weeks ago.

The annual hip-hop music festival Rock the Bells was set to hold its fourth and final installment of 2011 next Saturday, September 24th, in Boston, MA. But now, an issued press release reports that those plans have been canceled, with the festival blaming "scheduling conflicts, bad weather, and logistical challenges." The full statement reads as follows: "We are very disappointed that our Boston Rock The Bells Festival stop had to be cancelled this year. Unfortunately, we will not be able to execute the festival to our standards and apologize to the fans [...]

Black Star is a project that truly grew from the underground up and since forming and subsequently disappearing, the duo has become a highly sought after reunion and rare live act, worthy of the hefty $43.50 price tag as evidenced by the packed house and patient crowd, fueling the tangible energy on-stage until the show let out at midnight. The hype leading up to the show was palpable and no one seemed to mind that the duo came on an hour later than scheduled due to a late arrival by Mos Def.

And don't forget - for some reason or another, Rock the Bells Boston has been moved to 9/24. Fuck Tom Brokaw, because my generation was the greatest. [...]

Mos Def is changing his name at the end of this year. The new name: Yasiin. In an interview with Suckerfree at "Rock the Bells", Mos Def had this to say about his decision: "I'm retiring the Mos Def name after 2011. I'm actually doing it. Mos Def is a name that I built and cultivated over the years, it's a name that the streets taught me, a figure of speech that was given to me by the culture and by my environment, and I feel I've done quite a bit with that name and it's [...]

photos by Dana (distortion) Yavin , words by BBG Lauryn / Erykah Last year Rock the Bells, the touring hip-hop bonanza, picked up on the voguish festival concept in which an artist performs an old record from beginning to end. It went well, and this year's edition bought in twice as hard. On Saturday on Governors Island, amid other, more ordinary sets, 11 albums were performed in their entirety. What a gorging! What an [...]
