[ Clone Jack for Daze Series ] When it comes to Roman Flügel, imposing boundaries is a bad idea. Yes, the German's music is always unmistakable in terms of timbre and melodic progression, but in recent years particularly, he's built his very success on changing things up. He's gifted us with gentle elegy ("How to Spread Lies"), raucous house freestyling ("Brasil"), affecting hip-hop ("Thank You Jack"), neon-powered funk ("Deo") and rigid techno ("More Is [...]

Let's take a ride on the Autobahn. Running back label boss Gerd Janson has put together an 8-track "ambient not ambient" compilation for Dutch label Rush Hour. Entitled "Musik For Autobahns", the compilation includes new and exclusive tracks by German duo Âme, Amsterdam’s Tom Trago, Move D, Maxxi & Zeus (better known as Quiet Village), Marco Passarani, Roman Flügel, CF & Daywalker, and last but not least Tensnake. A perfect selection of cosmic house and disco grooves for your next road trip. You can preview the whole thing above. Fill it up! [...]

Techno Kittens were impressed by their first Kristina Records ‘in-store’ on Friday evening, and would highly recommend these brilliant free events (check their FB page for further details.) A chilled-out atmosphere, BYOB policy and the chance to see big names for free in a (seriously) intimate venue really needs to be further exploited, especially as one of the Techno Kittens lives just across the road! FlÜgel’s sound is notoriously hard to pin down (we’ve heard him described as like a box of chocolates...) but Friday saw him in a perfect pre-party mood playing a [...]
London based dj and producer Alex Egan has released his new 1694 EP under the moniker The Draughtsman on Marketing Music. Addictive timeless discoid tunes and amazing remixes by the best of the kind: Cosmo Vitelli, Roman Flügel and Tim Paris. Enjoy!

[Hypercolour] Hypercolour has done a great job of differentiating itself from contemporaries. There are patches of functional tech house in the label's catalog, but they've been tempered by more lasting records, such as Christopher Rau and Tilman Tausendfreund's Pea Gravel , Huxley's Let It Go , and Tom Demac's Swimming in my Mind . Perhaps it's this mixture - at once appealing to DJs, casual clubbers and chin-strokers alike - which has seen the UK label rise [...]

Kazumasa Teshigawara 's "Today's Smile" 01. Unknown artist, "Spotlight" (Pittsburgh Track Authority Remix) [Spotlight] Despite tags at the ends of the titles, remixes are often indistinguishable from being an artist's original track. Sure, the remixer used one snare sound or the claves you only notice on the 15th spin, but so often the connection to the source material is in name only. That's why so many producers prefer working with vocal tracks - you don't have to work as hard to connect the dots. Personally, [...]

Je n'étais pas trop fan de son album, pourtant encensé, mais là ce dernier maxi est rempli d'idées qui fonctionnent à merveille.Roman Flugel - Cookie Dust

[Live At Robert Johnson] Though far from formulaic, many of Roman Flügel's records are consistently similar: house, with impeccable FM synthesis and a good dash of quirk. Cookie Dust , Flügel's latest for Frankfurt's Live At Robert Johnson, more or less follows this game plan. On the A-side, "O.T.H." sounds like a much more subdued version of last year's "Bahia Blues Bootcamp." Here, ghostly harmonizing carries soft metal drums to the mid-section, where whizzing, firefly-like [...]
This week's podcast comes from Berlin's Marco Resmann. Most of us know him through his Watergate residency which started in 2006. In fact, it's worth mentioning that in his Watergate 10 mix CD released earlier this year, he's included one of the bangers in our back catalogue, Roman Flügel's remix of Darabi. Marco's solo productions are [...]

Music journalism cliché #29545: the phrase "dancing about architecture". Music journalism cliché #29546: the adjectives "hazy", "ethereal", "gauzy", "widescreen". Music journalism cliché #29547: clunky gender specific synonyms for the word songwriter when said songwriter is female, such as "songbird", "chantreause", or *retch* "songstress" Music journalism cliché #29548: synth music only ever occurs in "stabs" Music journalism cliché #29549: "X sounds like Y on acid" For more of these, check out a funny old post by Dave [...]

Graphic by Mark Hofmann You know a year has been fruitful for dance music when the singles, good as they are, happen to be eclipsed by a crop of especially great albums. 2011 was just such a happy anomaly, a year stacked so high with exceptional LPs that winnowing down a list of the 10 best was an unexpectedly difficult task. Even once the list was finished it seemed rather incomplete, with so many fine records by Kode9 & The Spaceape, tobias., DJ Qu, Rick Wilhite, Nebraska, Portable, James Blake, Moritz Von Oswald Trio, [...]

Graphic by Mark Hofmann 2011 will not be remembered as a particularly good year for the world. Between a myriad of horrifying natural disasters, the uncertain outcome of the Arab Spring, political gridlock in the U.S., the EU's seeming unraveling state, austerity protests, and a generally ugly economic period, the events of this year have not offered much to smile about. But for dance music fans, 2011 was a year rich with exciting music coming out of house, techno, bass music, and everywhere between and around. While it might not be remembered as [...]

Photo by Marwane Pallas What does it mean when the artists who "define" the year are all artists who have been around for at least five years? Considering the list below, it doesn't speak as much to a dearth of promising new talent in dance music - certainly, I don't think anyone could say that with a straight face in 2011 - but rather the longevity, ingenuity and constant strive for innovation that seems to drive those at electronic music's forefront. There were certain artists who seem to break out in a big [...]
Its very rare to hear a TEED mix outside of a live DJ performance so it was with great relish that we hit play on his recently recorded mixtape for BBC 6 Music . As you would expect this mix has real character starting from a deep and thoughtful platform as it gently builds in pace and intensity towards his latest release ' Dream On ', as the mix reaches Dream On you have sense that this track is perhaps the template for the whole mix as each subsequent track is a blend of [...]

Photo by Hussein Chalayan [ Dial ] If you follow dance music as obsessively as I do, you're likely to feel like there's something at stake with every 123 and MP3 that flows your way. Between the eternally forward motion of the UK scene, the endless refining of the Berliners, the fervent keeping [...]

I couldn't be more excited to present you with the debut release from Ethyl & Huxley's record label Saints & Sonnets . The original title track 3 Feet High is delivered in excellent fashion, from a duo that has been killing it on the bass line driven house front recently. Ethyl & Huxley first struck a nerve this year, with their underground hit Reflexions on legendary label Tsuba. Since then the pair have gone on to deliver some excellent music in solo efforts, as well as other collaborations such as Ethyl & Flori's Coney Island Boppers, which [...]
A track off the latest release from German electronic music producer Roman Flügel. Fatty Folders is the LP's title. It's out on Dial . The track above, "Song With Blue," features a very subtle beat, but it still puts four to the floor. I'm loving the jazzy ride cymbals, and that chopped and looped piano phrase is oddly mesmerizing. The whole thing escalates beautifully as well.
After two outstanding 12inch releases on Dial Records Roman Flügel continues his collaboration with Fatty Folders, a full-length debut album presenting a colorful selection of essential works. Also known as Eight Miles High, Soylent Green and a part of Sensorama and Alter Ego- Roman Flügel always has been a main influence of the Dial Records family.
