The Beastie Boys' Adam "MCA" Yauch would have turned 48 on August 5th. As a belated birthday celebration of the MC's iconic life and career, The Roots' ?uestlove has posted a demo version of the Beasties medley the Roots performed at the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony . This rough version features bits and pieces of "The New Style", "No Sleep till Brooklyn", "So What'cha Want", "Sabotage", and even the "drum roll from 'Shake Your Rump' to acknowledge their best album Paul's Boutique ." Here’s what Questo had to say on Okayplayer.com: History haahahahaha. i remember this show well. those who have Do You Want More/Things Fall Apart will recognize the “you are all about to witness….” intro (always had audio, never seen video) the mc of the show was my (not then [...]
Over the last few weeks, Okayplayer have premiered a four piece video series in preparation for the The Roots new album, The Undun. As has been reported, the new record is a narrative which can best be described below: "undun is an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999). Through the use of emotives and Redford’s internal dialogues the album seeks to illustrate the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out ‘on the corner’. Utilizing a reverse narrative arc, [...]

Having boken onto the scene way back in 1993 (yea, you read that right) The Roots have somehow managed to stay relevant and are about to let loose album number 13. Undone will feature ten new musical cuts and if the first single Make My featuring label-mate Big K.R.I.T. is anything to go by, this will be a beautifully smooth LP. According to lead singer Questlove, the album will chronicle the life of a Mr. Redford Stephens, a young man who becomes a criminal in order to survive. I’m addicted to this slow burning single for the [...]

Photo by Debi Del Grande From The Vaccines and Rimmel to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Dr. Martens , the synergy-rich promotional technique of bands working alongside corporate brands is nothing new. Demonstrating their Illadelphia uprbinging, The Roots ' relationship with alcohol conglomerate Diageo's sees the band handle things their way, taking that organization's TV jingle for their Captain Morgan line and making it their own with the rocking "To Life, Love & Loot". The track, recorded at at Manhattan's Quad Studios, is stripped to the core (drums, guitar, tuba) [...]

We are looking forward to the Roots latest and greatest album, Undun . Supposedly it's a concept album about a dude “who died in 1999 at the age of 25. The Roots will analyze the death by re-telling his life story post-mortem. The last concept album I got into was Blacktrash: The Autobiography of Kirk Jones . Check out the track below and the tracklisting as well. The Roots - Make My feat Big KRIT The Roots "Make My" featuring Big K.R.I.T. by [...]

The Roots always have great singles and they tend to pick guests that are both buzzed about and talented. They got a verse from Wale for "Rising Up" back when he was positioned to be the next big thing and they got Big K.R.I.T. for "Make My," where he atones for the rap star lifestyle. K.R.I.T. shows his gentler side that appears on songs like "Dreamin," but that he can't bring to Tity Boi songs. Black Thought doesn't put as much feeling into his verse and has some out of place lines like "Praying like a [...]

The Roots have announced a December 6th release date for their new studio album undun, and they have released a single called Make My featuring fellow label mate Big K.R.I.T. produced by Khari Mateen and

Hip Hop’s number one band, The Roots have made their long-awaited return. “Make My” feat. Big K.R.I.T. is the first single off U ndun . A bit different, more airy sound, than usual fare, but still just as good. The Roots “Make My” featuring Big K.R.I.T. by okayplayer

Every one in a while, The Roots come good with at least one truly great song. This is their latest. 'Make My' features Mississippi's Big K.R.I.T. and is taken from the band's upcoming album undun . More details. The Roots "Make My" featuring Big K.R.I.T. by okayplayer

The Roots just dropped a track from their upcoming album, undun . The musicians characterized the project as "an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999)." Drummer Ahmir Thompson characterized it more loquaciously: “At this point in our career we’d like for our work to have a unifying theme, and an experiential quality. We’ve been intentionally making our albums shorter in length so that they can be experienced as a continuous work. The music is band-oriented with an eye on the moody cinematic. As a DJ, I [...]

The Roots on the Intrepid ( more by Dominick Mastrangelo ) The Roots have unveiled undun , the band's latest LP due via Island/Def Jam on Dec 6th. undun is, as described by the band, "an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999) that plays in reverse, retelling the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out on the corner." Sounds heavy, and you can check out the lead track to surface, "Make [...]
