The ever-expanding MFNW brought the rock to Portland.

Sometimes a touring band shows signs of exhaustion. Road-weariness and weeks of blurred hotel rooms crack their voices, weaken their guitar strings, and deplete their energy. Not the Temper Trap . Buoyed by a few dozen pulsing strobe lights in a rainbow of colors, the band dives into “London’s Burning” from their recently-released sophomore album. Their performance is tight and polished from the start, without a hint of sloppiness. Vocalist Dougy Mandagi really does sing that high, unassisted by Auto-Tune or other robotic trickery. Hearing the opening notes of “Love Lost,” the crowd becomes [...]

Thibaut Berland aka Breakbot cracked open the night with a smooth, funky mix of house and disco. The French DJ/producer has remixed Justice’s “Let There Be Light” and shares space with the megastars on Ed Banger Records. The crowd was eager to get their dance on for him, and didn’t hesitate for a second when the speakers leaked their very first peep of the night; peeps that bloomed into bass-y growls, soulful croons, compressed piano melodies, and ambient background sounds like ocean waves and crickets. Despite Berland's lack of expression, through his music he splashed smiles onto every [...]

You know that odd, reverent feeling when you’re about to experience something important? The preamble, when your mind turns to static and you know you’re about to have one of those stories you retell for years. That’s what it’s like to wait for Wanda Jackson . When the evening begins, several bearded men appear onstage. They are clutching banjos and a stand bass, and several of them bear belt buckles that say “Larry.” Without introduction, Larry and His Flask dive into some serious quick-paced bluegrass perfection. The Roseland Theater erupts [...]

The audience is young. In typical overenthusiastic teenage fashion, clad in overpriced hoodies purchased at the nearby merch table, they crowd the venue early and shove unabashedly in front of others. Somewhere in the back of the room, a baby cries. All ages means all ages, but Sleigh Bells seems a little advanced for an infant. At the rear of the stage is a wall of Marshall amps, haphazardly covered by a black sheet and topped with massive strobe lights. They’ll make their debut later. Javelin , a two-man band from Providence, [...]

Concert goers everywhere understand that great experiences seeing live musicians hinge heavily on the atmosphere. The energy and tone of the venue, and most importantly the interplay between crowd and performer, can make or break the experience. Hip-hop in particular, whose intrinsic rhythms rely heavily upon the call and response within songs themselves, is particularly beholden to the concept. A flat and subdued audience at a hip-hop show will often result in a flat and sometimes resentful performance from artists. I can't tell you how many shows with high-energy performers-- from The Roots, to Wu-Tang, to A Tribe [...]

Rude Dudes began the night early with some funky turntable action. They were more like old scruffy dudes, but maybe they were rude, too--can't be sure; they looked pretty friendly. Dressed in camouflage ball caps and flannels, the dudes dropped house beats to which, strangely, no one danced. But DJs have it rough if they expect anything more than deadpan stares and the odd head bob from a pre-10pm, Tuesday night audience. Brooklyn's Sammy Bananas slipped in after, continuing the funky house theme while turning the heat up a notch. Midway through his [...]

Minh Tran The most controversial thing to happen to hiphop since this guy, Odd Future Golf Wang Kill Them All (I think I got that right) made their Portland debut this week. We dispatched Minh Tran to take some pictures and hopefully not get raped by Taylor the Creator . [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]
The second night of MusicFestNW brings die-hard fans, sweet jams, and all sorts of oddities.

For about 10 minutes leading up to the start of Starfucker’s set Wednesday night, I was pretty bummed. I had just shivered my way through two outstanding opening acts at the Roseland (why’s it got to be so bloody frigid in there? Was that cold air I felt blasting through the vents?!), and one so-so performance by another, but then I found myself watching as Starfucker set up their gear onstage. And they were all wearing jeans and hoodies. Now, I know these guys’ music doesn’t weigh on how they are clothed during a set, but since it [...]

This weekend, LCD Soundsystem graced the stage twice in the Northwest—first at the Roseland on Saturday and then on the mainstage of the Sasquatch! festival on Sunday night. I was there for the Sasquatch! show, and the band sounded incredible: Seven musicians onstage, totally locked in sync, taking songs ostensibly created solely by leader James Murphy and turning them into living, breathing dance-rock beasts. At moments in the set the band sounded like both Talking Heads and David Bowie, which is no small feat in itself, and when the fat, speaker-bursting synth line came in halfway through "Yeah (Crass [...]

Animal Liberation Organization (ALO) opening for Galactic at The Roseland was an amazing experience. ALO started off a few years ago in Southern California as a small, local jam-band kind of band, full of energy, great rhythm and music and talent. The local following has always been huge, but then they began getting big breaks in the music industry and began to perform at large three-day festivals such as Wakarusa. Not only that, they have opened for the likes of Dave Matthews Band and Jack Johnson. This month, they came to Portland on their last day opening for Galactic. It [...]

In a world so quick to worship the latest trend, it’s nice to know that there are people out there that still remember the roots, especially in a genre like hip-hop that has felt in recent years like it was stabbed with a diamond-encrusted ice pick and left to bleed out in the gutter. Never before have I seen a genre collapse so thoroughly and become so artistically bereft as hip-hop did in the last ten years; which is why I lost my damn mind when I heard The Cool Kids . Coming out of [...]

I’ve had a slightly unhealthy obsession with Josh Homme for some time now. It doesn’t hurt he’s got a sexy desert swagger that sends my head spinning, but the guy has yet to do wrong with the music he creates. Be it with Kyuss, Eagles of Death Metal, Queens of the Stone Age or any other project he attaches himself to, Homme has consistently turned everything he touches into gold for my ears. And, thankfully, he's also kept rock ‘n’ roll worth listening to. Back around Lollapalooza time this year, I started hearing rumors the unthinkable [...]

It was only appropriate. As the sound guy for Wolfmother prepped the instruments for their show on Thursday night, he made a stop at the organs and suddenly launched into the infamous chords from Deep Purple’s "Smoke on the Water." The crowd cheered wildly and the guy beamed from ear-to-ear. He knew a pure rock ‘n’ roll revival was about to burst upon the stage, and he was as amped-up about it as anyone else. And Wolfmother did not disappoint for one second. Casually sauntering onto the stage in a [...]

What a night of great rock and roll at the Roseland Theater . The main event, Lacuna Coil , which means empty spiral , drew a packed house of cheering/rabid fans. Lead vocalists, Christina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro, over a nonstop barrage of loud, wicked, gothic, alternative metal, tore into the mics as soon as they stepped on stage. As a longtime fan of their music, their energy on stage only intensified my appreciation. Check out their website , get their cd's, and prepare for a live show full of passion and energy. [...]
When: Friday Where: Roseland Theater The last time I saw Brazilian electro-spazsters CSS, their show was short but relentless. As I wrote then:...
There are good audiences, there are adoring audiences, and then there are flat-out worshipful audiences. Guess which one Jack White got Tuesday night at the Roseland Theater. Sorry -- did I say Jack White? Technically I should have said...
