Photo Review: PDX Pop Now!

Photo Review: PDX Pop Now! For the first time in three years, I missed a good half of the 48 bands (plus at least three or four guerilla acts) at this year's PDX Pop Now! festival. It was tough: I've become so accustomed to spending my entire PPN! weekend at Rotture, sweating, rocking, eating too many tacos and watching bands that I dearly love and ones I'm just hearing for the first time. But five weeks ago, during my weekly game of pickup "D League" basketball, I landed awkwardly on my knee and tore my ACL, which caused me to miss a bunch of sets [...]

PDX Pop Now! Announces Lineup For 2010 Festival

PDX Pop Now! Announces Lineup For 2010 Festival Set your calendars, folks: The 2010 PDX Pop Now! festival is coming in a short seven weeks. Today the free, all-local, all-ages festival announced the lineup for this year's fest—set to take place July 30-August 1—and it's predictably great. Au ! Parenthetical Girls ! Cloudy October ! Joggers ! But even with the bigger names, this fest has always been about discovery, about seeing a band you've never heard or of that one elusive rapper you've been meaning to catch for months. So without further ado, the whole lineup: Aan, [...]

Menomena debuts new song at PDX Pop Now Festival

Click here to view the embedded video. Menomena closed out the 2009 PDX Pop Festival with a set leaning heavily on their breakthrough LP Friend and Foe. They absolutely brought it, to the point that I was worried the people at the front of the stage were going to get crushed from the ripple beginning at the back of the audience. It was electric in a way that few concerts are. The band opened the set with the tune "Caught." It may or may not be on their upcoming new [...]

PDX Pop Now! Festival Schedule

PDX Pop Now! Festival Schedule PDX Pop Now! Festival is a nice, free weekend thing that's beginning to shape up as a showcase for the best Portland has to offer, music-wise. Is it too early to call the festival a city insituition? Even if you wouldn't, it's definitely on the same level as the Willamette Week's NW MusicFest, given it's DIY 'tude, the limitations of only having local bands and keeping the cost free. Over a stretch from July 24 - 26, beginning Friday afternoon and ending early Monday morning, nearly 50 local bands will decend on Rotture for what looks like a rowdy [...]

Review: The Bug and Warrior Queen at Rotture

The Bug - Poison Dart feat. Warrior Queen
There are still a few months left in 2008, but The Bug's "London Zoo" album looks to have a lock on my year-end top 10 list. It's a thick, heavy mass of gorgeous dubstep,* apocalyptic, menacing and unrelenting. Given...
