Well, I saw all of them perform in the span of a week recently, and the whole time I felt like I was on a freakish ride through the minds of some of the most fascinating men in music today. This is my debut article for The Burning Ear as their new concert reviewer for Vancouver, so I thought I'd do something a [...]

Royal Wood releases a haunting cover of Foster the People's hit 'Pumped Up Kicks.'

Love this version, well done (compare it to the original ). Hopefully we can get some people talking about his version, but I suspect when people type Royal's name into google today, it'll take you to wedding coverage..... Royal 's playing in Halifax tonight and they just put more tickets on sale, grab them here .

by teepoo Royal Wood is a Canadian singer/songwriter of ballads and pop music. A Mirror Without appropriately fits into his album A Good Enough Day which focuses on love and lost. In A Mirror Without he seems to be at an uncertain point of life after losing someone very close and important. His overall sound has often been described as similar to Hawksley Workman but I think Royal Wood has a more alternative pop feel where Royal Wood deals more [...]

If you're looking for something to do in Toronto tonight, I'd recommend a trip down to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. That's where Canadian singer/songwriter Royal Wood will be performing. Royal Wood is sure to bring the heartfelt pop that got him named iTunes Songwriter of the Year. Also on the bill is one of this blog's favorite female musicians, Newmarket-native Hannah Georgas. Saddle Creek When their debut mini-album Applause Cheer Boo Hiss arrived in 2006, Land Of Talk appeared as though Canada had a new hard rock heroine in Liz Powell, her white-hot guitar work matched only by her distinctive vocals, equal parts angst and yearning. It wasn't a title - or pigeonhole - that Powell seemed interested in, however, and their 2008 proper debut album Some Are Lakes surprised not only by dialing down the white-knuckle rock in favour of a somewhat softer and [...]
It's a month late and a few dollars short, but I wanted to throw up some videos from NXNE. They are grainy, lo-fi and probably not worth the time it took to upload them... BUT ENJOY! Filed under: Exclusive , New Music , Canada After successfully self-producing previous efforts such as 'Tall Tales' and 'The Milkweed EP,' singer-songwriter Royal Wood is finally ready to let someone else take control -- no easy feat for an artist who's accustomed to doing everything himself. "I've always kind of held on to the reins and I felt I reached the end of my production ability," he tells Spinner prior to a performance at Toronto's Gladstone Hotel. "I really wanted to learn something and be uncomfortable, [...]

Filed under: Video , Exclusive , Canada Royal Wood is quickly becoming one of Canada's finest singer-songwriters, ranking amongst the storied likes of Rufus Wainright and Ron Sexsmith , with his skills on fine display on his newest album 'The Waiting.' The first single, 'On Top of Your Love,' "is a song I wrote in the name of lust," Wood explains. "It's about being separated from someone you just can't have to satisfy your desire due to circumstance. An itch that [...]
Here is part 2 of who I or you should check out at NXNE in Toronto. So this will be Thursday night's event. It is going to be busy insane Thursday at NXNE. A hard decision to choose on who to see badly. Let's check out who will be playing. Found out that from Thursday to Sunday there is going to be a " Live in Bellwoods " picnic series at Trinity Bellwoods Park. It is present by The Musebox and Humble Empire. [...]
Today's song comes in from Toronto-based singer/songwriter/producer Royal Wood and his second full-length album A Good Enough Day , released via Canadian Dead Daisy Records in 2007. The album follows-up on Wood's 2004 debut LP Tall Tales , and has since been followed-up by a 2009 EP titled The Lost and Found EP . This past November, Wood supported the latest EP with his first headlining tour through Western Canada, accompanied by Atlantic Canadian singer/songwriter Rose Cousins ; Cousins, along with Ana Egge , served as the backing vocal tandem on [...]

Thunder Power is releasing a split EP with London's Alessi's Ark titled Friend Ships. Thunder Power is a six-piece Omaha, Nebraska, indie pop band featuring the infectious vocals of Kacynna Tompsett and excellent background musicians that compliment her perfectly. The band's first release, Love Yourself, was an excellent album featuring one of our favorite songs on 2008, Casanova. Trust me...the more you listen to Kacynna's vocals, the more you'll find yourself liking her. Blood Water [...]

Ever since the Royal Tenenbaums, I've marveled over how cool it would be to have the first name of Royal. It sounds so, um…regal. There's a new Royal that's come to my attention recently and his bio reminds me of the Wes Anderson characters. This Royal, Royal Wood, is a former child prodigy that began playing piano at the age of four and is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist. You'll recall Richie "The Baumer" Tenenbaum was a tennis playing prodigy that experienced a nervous breakdown at center court of a tennis match. I'm certainly not forecasting a similar fate for Royal Wood [...]

(photo: Dustin Rabin) Until I actually downloaded Royal Wood 's A Good Enough Day , I hadn't realized just how many of its songs I already knew, but just never knew they were played by Toronto's very own answer to M. Ward. Multi-instrumentalist Wood has compiled an EP of material to bridge the gap between 2007's A Good Enough Day and its follow-up. The Lost And Found EP contains more of Wood's finely crafted piano-led melodies, adding intricate string arrangements to his traditional song craft. Wood connects [...]

web site || buy from zunior Effortless; a term thrown around all too often in music reviews. The overused descriptor nestles up nicely beside sentiments like beautiful, epic, soaring, hazy, and " I liked their earlier stuff better " and when it comes to classic chamber pop tracks it seems to be a pre-requisite. When you hear the perfect combination of velvety vocals, smooth melodies and cinematic soundscapes, it's far too easy to talk about how weightless and effortless the sound feels. The truth is those songs are the hardest songs to [...]
web site :: order record from zunior The last few days at Casa D'Acker haven't been easy. We are up to our elbows in boxes and last minute details, trying to find time for friends, tie up loose ends and still make time for us. Today is Nic's birthday and I can't even get her flowers because we have no where to put them. Sometimes I have trouble seeing the forest through the trees, as I realize this move is something we have both been waiting for a long time, but seriously, Friday AM [...]
Morning, Sally Hazelet Drummond In The Morning - Leafcutter John An earthworm, divining moisture, twists and burrows black soil, slow rupturing to the surface. Above, dew-drenched leaves click and clack and birds hop on spiny spindle legs. The soft thwack of early-shift driver's tires beat periodic on the distant road. A broad-breasted robin spots movement in the grass and, abrupt flurry and
