As the sun sets on our Record Store Day Week coverage, I talk to ex NME/XFM radio DJ and New Noise presenter Jon Hillcock about alternative music, Record Store Day and the risk independent record stores run of pricing their passionate fans out of the market. How important are independent record stores to you? Very. I mean if they disappeared it would be a real shame, PureGroove closing certainly was a shame, there are certainly less independent stores there used to be in London. [...]

As I step out of Old Street station in the crisp early hours of the morning, last night’s revellers are still stumbling through the streets which find themselves lined with abandoned kebabs. The reason I’m out this early on a Saturday, well it’s Record Store Day of course. Turning the corner of the Old Truman Brewery around 7am, the queue is already around 100 deep and the sense of excitement is palpable. Keeping my ears warm underneath my headphones as the odd obnoxious drunk staggers past, I am suddenly aware that I’m being a bit unsocial. I mean here I [...]

A relative newcomer to Brighton’s independent record shop scene, Resident Music celebrates its seventh birthday this month. Less than five minutes walk from Brighton station, the North Laine located store is nestled on a pedestrianised street next to an Oxfam bookshop and opposite an overwhelmingly bric-a-brac department store called Snooper’s Paradise. This makes an apt spot for a shop run by self-confessed “serious music lovers” Derry Watkins, Natasha Youngs and their four-strong team. Resident is as well known for its exhaustive, Rough Trade rivalling weekly mailout and top notch in-store [...]

Michael McClatchey (left) and Stephen Bass: Moshi Moshi So here we are, Record Store Day is finally upon us. As I type these words I’m sure there are hundreds, if not thousands of people across the UK queuing up outside their favourite independent shop, fantasising about getting their hands on at least one extra special release - if they haven’t gone and got their enthusiastic mitts on it already! One of those extra special releases today is a Hercules and Love Affair 7” being released by the venerable [...]

This is Cinema We seem to be developing a theme today. As you know, Record Store Day 2011 is just mere hours away from kick-off and Chicago bands are definitely ready to play. Ambient poppers This is Cinema are offering a limited edition 7” for RSD through Whistler records, featuring a little relaxing ditty called “Mädchen.” The song - named for the German word for “Girl” - will eventually be the first single off This is Cinema’s upcoming debut album, but you can listen to it [...]
Local rockers The Mutts want you to support Chicago’s record stores on this Saturday’s Record Store Day. The band drove all over town to profile a select number of stores (including Reckless, Permanent, Record Breakers, Laurie’s Planet of Sound and Deadwax) and drop off a couple copies of their latest album for free. Check out this amazing video with a pretty awesome soundtrack, provided by none other than the Mutts. And if you want more information on what shops around town are doing for RSD 2011, c heck out our extensive guide . Happy shopping, folks!

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that this Saturday, April 16, is the fourth annual Record Store Day . Like the past three years, record stores around the country are offering exclusive releases, great deals, free goodies and even in-store performances for Saturday's celebration of independently owned record stores. The event is even better if you live in Chicago because there are many great record stores strewn across the city, but it's hard to keep count of which one is doing what. Therefore, once again , we've done the dirty work for you in this [...]
