Scan "Self-Portrait with Sheila " by me Howdy kiddos! How the fuck are ya? Me? Well just dandy dandy, thank you for asking... As many of you know, I've been a busy boy over at tsurufoto , takin' lots of pictures, starting a nudie blog , and, of course, running the #1 nudiezine in the world ! I've taken quite a hiatus from "new music" for a few months and I [...]

Here's an overdose of some tunes we've been listening to. Let me know what ya'll think in the comment section. DO IT. Our boys No Gold just released a new single... you could call it Junior Boys meets Justice on a downer. No Gold - Good & Bad Priory is a band we've been enjoying for a while now... weather or not they have two one hit wonders is still up for debate. Check out their self titled EP here . Priory - Lady [...]
Wilco played in LA this week and I missed it. Here's the worst part...I didn't even know they were playing. There was a time where I went to see 3-4 concerts a week. Now if I see that many a year...it was a good year. Part of having kids and working all the time, you give up certain things. Concerts seemed to be one of the first things to go. But now my kids are getting old enough that

Eric Charles Christenson - his name has the same cadence and a a similar whimsical ring to a certain famous Dutch fabulist. Unlike Hans Christian Anderson however, Eric does not lope across the countryside dishing out morals to eager children, (nor was he ever portrayed by Danny Kaye in a move in 1953.) What he does dish out is tasty earfuls of catchy Indie-pop to the delight of Chippewa Valley Music lovers via Wisconsin Built , his musical collaboration with fellow Eau Claireianite Thom Fountain. The WB recently ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to raise [...]

We (i.e. I) have been very happy to partner with the good people of Paper Bag Records for the last year or so to premiere some of the excellent performances in their Paper Bag Session video series. Filmed by Mitch Fillion of Southern Souls , these live performances from the Paper bag roster usually happen in quirky locations and provide a new, fresh take on some of the label's best music. Earlier this week, they released a (FREE!) compilation download of some of the sessions' most memorable performances, which you can grab yourself [...]

This isn't exactly new, but it's a beaut so I had to share it. The Rural Alberta Advantage remain a lesser known band which is shocking considering how insanely talented each member of the RAA is. Check out a solo piano performance from frontman Nils Edenloff for The Paper Bag Sessions . Dude's voice is so unique and the songwriting is top notch. Anyone sleeping on these guys should get their head out of their ass. Check out "Under The Knife" below, as well as "North Star" and "Tornado [...]
Even quicker this morning: You know those Paper Bag Sessions videos that have been cropping up here and on other blogs? The ones that capture Paper Bag Records ' inimitable roster of artists delivering some pretty intimate performances for the camera (as shot by Southern Souls Mitch Fillion)? Well, the label has kindly gone one step further, by distilling a few of those performances into an audio-only format, and compiling them into The Paper Bag Sessions Volume 1 . Cuts by Austra , Cuff The Duke , Elliott BROOD , PS I [...]

Here is part two of counting down the singles and music videos of 2011. This time it is counting down from #30 to #11. Most of the singles are compiled from the Singles Chart on my site. There will be some songs that wasn't on the chart but are worthy to be noticed. Check it out. 30. Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks [...]

Well, you have seen my top 60 songs of 2011 posted on here over the past couple of weeks. There were a few that I reluctantly left off the list but still think they deserved some credit. Here are some of the stragglers that just missed out. Enjoy. Free mp3: The Black Keys - Sister Free mp3: Gardens & Villa - Black Hills Free mp3: Middle [...]

2011 has turned out to be the year in music where I found myself resting, and drinking deeply. If you look at the three major music festivals I went to in 2011 (other than SXSW, which is always a debaucherous 1000-mph wonderful mess) they were all of the scenic, restorative type: camping at Sasquatch at Washington's Columbia River Gorge, Telluride Bluegrass where I pitched my tent right by a rushing river, and Doe Bay Fest on isolated Orcas Island in the San Juans. The ethos of these music festivals, more than anything, is a [...]

We all love lists, and we all love sarcasm. Though, I think its important to reflect upon the last year of music, I'm going to do so through the use of a list. It was a fantastic year full of awesome albums, and I'm going to count down a bunch of my favorites, and give you something to listen to while reading. Welcome to the top 10, albums that to be quite honest, could all be number ones, but hey it wouldn't be a list without some order. 10. Rural Alberta Advantage - Departing [...]

Here is part three of the Best of 2011 Canadian albums. We are almost getting halfway through the list. Here is the ranking from #30-21. 30. Shotgun Jimmie - Transistor Sister Listen to Late Last Year and Transistor Sister . 29. Coeur de Pirate - Blonde Listen to Adieu and Cap Diamant . 28. Ferriswheel [...]
The race for Vague Space song of the year was incredibly tight between the top four tracks on this chart (which also nicely mirror the top four albums of the year) but alas a decision had to be made and since I fell one way for album, I fell the other way for song so without further ado, here's my favorite track of 2011... 1. "Barnes' Yard" The Rural Alberta Advantage This track was actually also [...]

Heycoolkid!'s 100 Best Songs Of 2011 (41-55) . . 55. Middle Brother - "Me, Me, Me" What is there not to love when combining key elements of Delta Spirits, Deer Tick, and Dawes? "Me, Me, Me" is an indie honky-tonk set on fire. Every element from the Jerry Lee Lewis style piano to the Lynard [...]

Frank Yang It may have sounded like Tuesday night's grand Fucked Up throwdown at The Great Hall was going to be an untoppable finale to the 2011 concert season in Toronto, but remember - that was just the first of a two-night event and if you were going to try and top a recital of one of 20112s best albums (that's David Comes To Life , for the record) then a front-to-back performance of one of the best Canadian albums of the past 15 years is a pretty good [...]

Scottish Kate is a great friend of this blog and has often offered her (sometimes pithy) opinions on the world of music - and very good taste she has too. She also runs the always excellent (sometimes pithy), and often provocative blog A Burdz Eye View for all things Scottish (of course), political and musical. Here are her aural selections for 2011. The Burd's Best Songs of 2011 Well it doesn't get any easier. Though given that all my old schticks are in here aplenty [...]
The Best Songs Of 2011 (76 - 100) Making the Best Albums list was relatively easy compared to nailing down the 100 best songs of 2011. The level of incredible music to surface this year is unbelievable. What's more difficult is trying to create some sort of order when laying these songs out, what makes [...]
