They've drank together, played together, toured together and even woke up next to each other (we assume). Now it's finally time to discover the one thing the whole world has been waiting for. Who is the bigger BLOKE? Let battle commence... Editors note: We stole this from FHM. Please don't judge us. * Bloke Test James 'The Twilight Sad' Graham VS Scott ' Frightened Rabbit' Hutchison * [...]

As 20132s reply to the strong-but-weathered legacy of bands like Brand New or The Get Up Kids, and even Joan of Arc and The Anniversary, The American Scene's thoughtful, pop-infused indie rock is something too many fans of clever lyrics and depressing hooks have overlooked as of late. Kids seem to be sprinting past their merch table and gobbling up the more sugary, and even aggressive, output from their peers and label contemporaries at shows where TAS opens for The Story So Far, State Champs, et al. Meanwhile the boys keep pumping out incredible track after incredible track, [...]

That lone trumpet playing throughout Joywave's 'Dying Well' sure as hell reminded me of Homeland's opening credits - well, up until I rewatched them. It may not remind me of the credits anymore, but there's gotta be something Homelandish about this. Besides that meaningless frustration, 'Dying Well' carries some well supported vocals by none other than that lonely trumpet. This whole piece carries pretty damn well in fact. Wish the rest of Joywave's 88888 mixtape did as much. I just didn't find anything else that stuck in my head so [...]
Those unfamiliar with Bill Patrick may well be closed off to a world of incredible sound. The native New Yorker living in Berlin has got supreme taste, be it in the booth of the world's best clubs, or on his Private Stock radio show playing the finest of all that isn't dance music. To celebrate life and music and other cool stuff, Bill's compiled a top 10 of his favorite tracks of 2013 thus far; and trust us, it's a really f*cking good top 10. Listen above, buy below: Patrick Gil [...]

Valentina - Gabriel Most of you will recognize these vocals from the Joe Goddard version released about a year ago. The songstress behind that track, Valentina, has just included her own take on ‘Gabriel’ as a part of her Wolves EP. The release is forthcoming on the always relevant Greco-Roman imprint.

About a month ago, I received a mysterious DM on Twitter with a YouTube link to a fascinating 20-view video. Less than 2 weeks later, the video skyrocketed up to 20,000+ and continues to grow... While most of you are still nursing deep cut wounds from the days of Budden's Mood Muzik or coping with the fact that Slug is happy now, a new generation of sadness has arrived. Just 16 years old and hailing from Stockholm, Yung Lean Doer and the #sadboys will make you soul search. Why is he so sad, you ask? Because [...]

There exist a certain class of entertainer-celebrities whose every move represents a significant addition to their brand. Their ability to produce interesting or exciting music (or movies, or etc.) has faded, but still their cult of personality soldiers bravely on: their personal lives are covered in trashy magazines, they start a crossover acting (or music, or etc.) career, they make ever-more-outlandish public appearances, and so forth. Stripped of their productive capability, they become a sort of pop culture avatar. No one really gives a fuck about Madonna anymore but her albums still get press. Snoop Lion (nee Dogg) [...]

After the collaboration between Scott Hutchison and Andy Hull that we bought you earlier this week , you can now stream another Record Store Day release, in the form of the split single between The Twilight Sad and Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat . The release finds the former covering (If You) Keep Me In Your Heart from the latter's incredible Everything's Getting Older LP, while the duo return the favour with their cover of Alphabet, the opening track from [...]

Stream: Elvis Depressedly - "Pepsi/Coke Suicide" Elvis Depressedly has dropped a new track from the upcoming release, Holo Pleasures and it really feels like steady improvement. Mat Cothran has been recording this album with his full band and it really shows with the fullness of the sound. In many ways the instrumentation feels warm on this track, but if you are familiar with Cothran at all you know that his lyrics are going to directly conflict with that. It creates an air of uneasy comfort and it really makes the song stick out, [...]

LA producer Shlohmo (aka Henry Laufer, he of Wedidit and Friend of Friends fame) is tough to categorize. In fact, "eclectic" is an understatement: in his live sets and prerecorded mixes, genres ranging from electronic music to film scores to indie rock to r'n'b to eight different kinds of rap to TV theme songs get matched interchangeably. Shlohmo's work is something you can really only imagine existing in the world of the internet, where everyone curates their own personal universe of influences and obsessions. This is annoying in, say, your brony-and-football-and- Star-Trek obsessed roommate, but at the end of [...]
No one artist has ever been able to so simultaneously coexist in the inherently contrasting parallel universes of the underground and the overblown quite like Thom Yorke. Tonight, he plays a refurbished marquee-like expanse around the back of Hackney Road in the shadow of the sinister gas holders that preside over the E2 skyline so, two decades on to the day from the release of Radiohead's much since lionised début, Pablo Honey . He is a creature of contradistinction – what Tyler, The Creator may deem seething: "a fucking walking paradox." And just days later, it is his squinting [...]

Chicago duo Houses drop a beauty in the video for the single “The Beauty Surrounds”. In a visually-stunning desolate wasteland, we learn firsthand of love lost, and the pain and suffering that one must endure in order to come out the other side. Huge, engulfing dual vocals of both Dexter Tortoriello and Megan Messina help give us the feeling of two former lovers in a state of confusion on what to do next. It’s heartbreaking to see unfold, but there is always this bit of hopeful optimism that feel connected to these two characters and by the time the [...]
I've never heard anybody sound as unconvinced talking about a band than Pat Kenny is introducing "Dublin-based six-piece band" Little Xs For Eyes, whose sound, he continues, is "in their own words, harmony heavy folk tinged with synth doo-wop, but you can judge for yourself". Thanks Pat, I will. I [Read more]
