Photos and words by Scott Sheff It was a flashback to generations past at The Echo. Headlining the night was Foxygen, a modern-day twist on the psychedelic sounds found in classic rock from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Led by the duo of Sam France (vox) and Jonathan Rado (guitar/keyboards), Foxygen is a journey into yesteryear in both sight and sound. With France dressed in a long brown hippie shirt and beads around his neck, and Rado donning a big-brimmed black pimp daddy hat, Foxygen set the tone for the night with its opening number “Bowling [...]
Burger Records' sold-out event proves that a cohesive festival is possible when the people involved have shared incentives.

Pulling from 1960s psychedelia, 1970s rock and roll and new wave of the 1980s, Sam Flax is an artist from Berkeley who operates in the realm of lo-fi pop. Submerged in and inspired by playlists from past decades, he spent six years recording in his bedroom and finally emerged in 2012 with his debut album, Age Waves . The record offers both synthpop and guitar rock flavors, with a healthy amount of reverb weaving both sides of his sound together. After colorful performances at the Noise Pop Festival and Austin's South By Southwest, Sam Flax is bringing [...]

//photo by katie miller Yeah yeah, Burger Records put this out a while back and yeah yeah it's from Berkeley.. but what else you got? This record sorta rules from top to bottom and works so well as a road trip album, I played it while driving through the desert and while I was in the mountains. How many albums can sync up with that much nature and still sound on point? To be honest, I don't even know what to call this genre anymore since it houses so many different elements. [...]

Wednesday was the Echo & Echoplex & Origami Vinyl “throwdown” at Cheer Up Charlie’s, and this embedded journalist perhaps became too embedded, as I ended up DJing the indoor stage and having my movements be tethered to the power strip next to a PA mixer for the better part of an afternoon. Luckily the event was pretty loose and disorganized, so much so that I arrived to the strains of a pretty amazing and possibly unlisted all-black soul group with male back-up singers. No later band really matched that energy. The crowd-pumping band leader wasn’t singing the most [...]

Age Waves , an LP of ultra-warped industrial West Coast pop by Sam Flax , came out last year on Burger Records, but not nearly enough people know its joys yet. That'll change soon as he hits the road with classicist rock darlings Foxygen, but Friday is the perfect time to take a kaleidoscopic viewpoint towards your life. Ideal for fans of Ariel Pink and Chrome. AGE WAVES by SAM FLAX

Sam Flax, "Fire Doesn't Burn Itself"

Photos and words by Leslie Kalohi Several large kites and a huge, ornamental fan were peppered all across the Fonda’s stage for a sold out evening with The Growlers. The crowd squeezed in to hear the trademark “Beach Goth” sound produced by the SoCal band. Crowd surfers and a bra could be seen sailing through the air during the set. With a driving, grooving beat, Dirt Dress got the crowd to move. The more adventurous hoisting themselves onto the crowd to be carried along to the music. [...]

Well the end of 2012 is drawing to a close and we've run down the albums that got the most play around RSTB this year. To avoid the list just being a mass of Ty Segall albums Twins (a personal fave of the bunch) takes the place on the list but the other two would have easily made the list, especially the collab with White Fence which got plenty of play around here as well. Some really great releases this year and a banner year for both Drag City and Sacred Bones with some heavy inclusions in our list. [...]

Interesting time of year. Shit's getting chilly, and music geeks like myself are starting to juggle names in their head for best-of lists that, by and large, mean nothing. More importantly, there's a fresh crop of albums dropping that should help to round out the year. Plus, it's been a while since we dropped one of these, so there are even a few stragglers left over from early October. All quality shit, but I'm partial to the silky ass contribution from Lapalux and the '70s b-movie glory that is Action Bronson's latest. The Andy Stott is one of the most [...]
