I love Sam Raimi. I've seen every film of his, and loved just about all of them. He's the genius behind arguably the most important superhero movie of the past 20 years, and one of the most influential horror films of the past 50. But I can't say I was excited to hear he'd be working on a film based on Frank L. Baum's Oz character, titled "Oz: The Great and Powerful." The movie will be a prequel to the 1939 classic—one of the most beloved movies of all time—and will tell the [...]

A few months back I found myself in a rather interesting conversation about the film X-Men: First Class . I was at one of our local Toronto Blogger pub nights and conversation was flowing about numerous film related topics. Somehow I ended up defending the latest X-Men film. Now while I enjoyed X-Men: First Class , it is not necessarily a film I would usually go out of my way to defend. However, I found myself championing the film nonetheless. Like all good discussions about film, the conversation evolved into an [...]

Ok you crazy deadites , we can jump up and down for joy now that it has been confirmed that the long awaited sequel/remake for the Evil Dead movies in officially in the works ! As it turns out, it will in fact be a remake of sorts.. but what does that mean when Evil Dead 2 was in actuality a remake of Evil Dead 1 ? Who knows at this point, it's still too early in the game. [...]

Director Sam Raimi is off to a brilliant start with his upcoming project Oz: The Great And Powerful . Casting has been underway for some time now, and production is set to begin this July in Michigan. Michelle Williams joins the cast as Glinda , the good witch, the role Billie Burke made famous in the 1939 film The Wizard Of Oz . Oz: The Great and Powerful is set as [...]

Very interesting news on the new Amazing Spider-man movie. As reported by SuperHeroHype (and many many others). Avi Arad's statement: "It's not a comeback. You have to look at it this way. Do you want to know more about Spider-Man? This movie is going to tell stories that you didn't see in movies 1, 2 and 3." There is all sorts of discussion going on about how this can be possible, given the cast of characters. For one, isn't Uncle Ben dead? Webshooters? With such a simple [...]

The prequel to the beloved classic The Wizard of Oz , tells the story of Oz before his meeting with Dorothy and the events of that film. James Franco is currently in talks to play Oz, and former Spiderman helmer Sam Raimi is directing. So who will fill out the cast? Mila Kunis is also currently in talks with the production team. She is up for the part of Theodorah [...]

Sony released the first official shot of Andrew Garfield in the Spidey suit today. Photos of Garfield ( Never Let Me Go , The Social Network ) and Emma Stone ( Superbad , Zombieland ) on set as Peter Parker and love interest Gwen Stacy leaked a few weeks ago, but this is the first official look we've seen at your new friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. When a Spider-Man reboot was first announced last year, I, like most fans of Sam Raimi's take on the franchise, was equal parts aghast and confused. That's [...]

Sam Raimi , the madman genius behind masterpieces such as Evil Dead , and Spiderman , is set to direct the untold prequel to The Wizard of Oz . Oz: the Great and Powerful , tells the story of the Wizard back before he came to rule in the Emerald City. There has been talk for months on who exactly will helm the Oz prequel, with names like Tim Burton , and Terry [...]
I hope Hollywood never remakes or updates The Wizard of Oz, especially Tim Burton, but the possibility of director Sam Raimi revisiting the mythology of L. Frank Baum's Oz is intriguing. The project would actually be about the Wizard of Oz, subsequently titled Oz, The Great and Powerful.
In Caribou's video for "Odessa", Video Marsh sends an improbably attractive young woman through a hellish rural snowscape replete with phallic rams, a little blonde girl, a snarling wolf, and disembodied yellow teeth, evoking most readily David Lynch or even Sam Raimi's A Simple Plan . Though she wrecks her car and comes out bloodied, the woman ruefully smiles...hinting at her successful escape?
This really isn't much of a surprise to anyone, but Alan Cumming , who is one of the stars of the upcoming Bono/Edge penned musical, Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark , confirmed at a recent Times Talks event that the production would be significantly delayed. Previews were scheduled to begin next month, but speaking at a TimesTalk event, Mr. Cumming said: "No one's going to be there that day. We're just waiting." He said the show had hit "an iceberg of financial ruin" last year when producers could not [...]

MUSIC NEWS - The writer of the classic 'Addams Family' and "Green Acres " theme songs, Vic Mizzy, died at home in L.A. on Saturday night at the age of 93, his representative, Jonathan Wolfson informs us. Vic was born in New York and began writing music for TV in the late 1950s, starting with the music for 'Shirley Temple's Storybook", but had been writing songs for the stars of the period, including Doris Day, Dean Martin, Billie Holiday and Perry [...]
We've said it before and we'll say it again: horror and metal go together like PB&J, like Jager and puking, like Kerry King and talkin' smack. They are the most natural of pairings. And so it is with great pleasure that we premiere this exclusive footage from The Thaw, the latest installment of Lionsgate's Pictures' "Ghost [...]
Here's a really interesting interview from Comic Con with directors Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo Del Toro, Robert Rodriguez, and Sam Raimi. This brief segment touches on the state of independent cinema, and whether they would have achieved the same amount of success in today's world where everyone has a HD camera. It's really a shame I couldn't find the segment with Megan Fox where the fan boys ask her about nipple tape. Related posts: Trailer: Jennifer's Body The newest film [...]
In Minnesota we have an outstanding little project called Northern Outpost, and Borangutan regulars are very familiar with this. It's a pride and joy of Minnesota. A similar project has sprung up in California recently called DirtyLaundry TV, where artists are interviewed while doing their laundry in a laundromat. Sweet. Just sweet. Here's a recent episode [...]
Blizzard Entertainment, the makers behind the very popular World of Warcraft video game, and Legendary Pictures (Warner Brothers's genre arm) have hired director Sam Raimi for their big screen adaptation . Raimi's no slouch ( Evil Dead, Army of Darkness , the Spider-Man films) when it comes to either fantasy, horror or big budget action movies. I never got into World of Warcraft or Warcraft in general, so I can't say how they would fashion the MMORG into a movie. Still, I'm intrigued by Raimi's involvement. The scoop was first reported by AICN and [...]

Drag Me To Hell is the best kind of nostalgia. See, back when I was young and impressionable, I saw a movie called Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn. The flick is extremely, gut-wrenchingly violent; chock full of rotting flesh, blood, boils and even a dismembered hand. It's also one of the funniest films ever made. The thing is, while director Sam Raimi saw the sheer terror involved in calling up the spirits of the dead, he also saw the absolute absurdity of the situation. Mr. Raimi brings this same [...]

I became a fan of the Horror genre on the countless Saturday Nights when Bob Wilkin's Creature Feature was televised. I lived for Oliver Reed's Wolfman or James Whale's melancholic monster classic Bride of Frankenstein . But it was the previews of Romero's original Night of the Living Dead which really got to me. Filmed in Black and White, channel two's coming attraction trailer fixated on ghoulish mobs feasting upon human meat and dripping blood. It was a miracle that the nine year old me ever found a minute of sleep after viewing those images. A [...]

Ellen Page dropped out of Sam Raimi's horror flick because she didn't want to follow up her Oscar-turn in Juno with something so declasse. So Alison Lohman stepped in at the last minute. This is the first non-Spider Man movie Raimi has directed since 2000. Wow, almost a decade. After enduring what seems like years of torture porn, creatively bankrupt slasher films, The Saw franchise and tired J-horror retreads, horror-movie enthusiasts will finally be treated to a good old-fashioned "scary curse" movie. Also? This seems strangely pertinent to our current financial crisis. [...]

Either that or you'll think, "...this looks like the best party ever."
