Toronto - The holiday season is an interesting time of year, one in which one's usual resitance to things that might be considered slightly corny or cheesy are in fact actually embraced. Christmas specials we've seen dozens of times over, albums by Mariah Carey, all of them are kind of OK at this time of the year. When this tendency to like Christmassy stuff is combined with a solid lineup of Canadian talent, it turns into something very much like the Andy Kim Christmas concert. The annual charity event, now in it's seventh year, was raising funds this night for Julliette's [...]

It's hard to tell exactly when the crowd knew that they were a part of something special during day two of Festival Music House , the official (but invitation only) music component of TIFF. It might have been at the beginning of the evening, when alt-rock/country duo Whitehorse took the stage and played a lively set to a crowd of no more than 75 people - all of whom gave the band their undivided attention. It might have been when the feel-good story of the year, Saskatoon's Rolling Stone cover boys [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive Frederick M. Brown, Getty Images It was a typical evening at kickoff of the Toronto International Film Festival Wednesday, Sept. 7. In a secluded basement with a capacity of just 100 souls, fashionably dressed locals gathered to catch a glimpse of Hollywood -- and support a good cause. Adrian Grenier , star of the soon-to-wrap ' Entourage ,' was supposedly on hand to host the War Child fundraiser event, which [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Holy Hell David Bastedo for Sam Roberts Band It looks like a prop from a horror movie, but the photo Sam Roberts Band bassist James Hall posted of his arm on his personal Facebook page is very real. Fascinating to see such open wounds up the entire length of an appendage, repeat visits to the site were a morbid curiosity for many. "That's why I put [...]
In the second installment of our Hidden Track Presents recording session featuring the Sam Roberts Band , Sam Roberts and Dave Nugent treated us to a barebones version of Twist The Knife from their most recent studio effort Collider . Dark and embittered lyrics are set against stirring harmonies in this bluesy folk tune. This is our last song from Sam Roberts, but stay tuned for many more great acts to come. We hope you're enjoying watching our new webseries as much as we are enjoying making it! [...]
We are very proud to present the first episode of a new in-studio performance webseries running exclusively on Hidden Track. The series will focus on intimate performances by talented artists from every genre, all in a live setting. Hidden Track's goal is to bring you stripped-down versions of great songs, with a feeling of closeness not possible at a typical concert. We were lucky enough to get Sam Roberts Band for our first episode and we couldn't be happier with the results. In the vain of a long [...]

As a songwriter, singer, and artist in general, Roberts tends to be more reliable than revelatory. For Sam Roberts, nostalgia is its own virtue. After three records, the Montreal rocker has by now surely earned the right to self-describe as a "veteran", but like many of his musical countrymen, Roberts sounded like a grizzled old rock hand even in his impressionable early years. For all of the hooky pop on his 2003 full-length debut We Were Born in a Flame and the occasional, involved descents into jammy psychedelica on its 2006...
Looking at the front of this album I had no clue what to expect from Sam Roberts. Well, I should say; I had an idea what type of music that Roberts would play but it was held back by perceptible disbelief; could someone in 2006 come out with music that recalled the rock of the [...]

Fitz and The Tantrums at Sasquatch! 2011 () Words and Photos : Drake LeLane Sasquatch! Music Festival 2011, Day 3 Day three instantly provided a dilemma of sorts, with the Smith Westerns starting the day off at noon, and me being prone to desire sleep. I ended up getting neither sleep nor the desired set thanks to time wasted setting up a promo phone overnighted to me - which turned out to not have any coverage on the grounds of Sasquatch! (AT&T... Photos by Tony NelsonSam Roberts Band June 6, 2011 7th St. Entry, Minneapolis There is something to be said for music that embodies straight-ahead rock 'n roll in 100% pure form. Actually, the
Typical. That's the only word that comes to mind as I find words to describe the Sam Roberts Band (official new name by the way) latest effort, Collider. It's not a bad album, in fact, it has a lot of tracks that I'm sure people will highlight as their favourite summer songs. That being said, the album doesn't offer [...]
