ILLUSTRATION BY LYDIA CONKLIN Another year has passed, and with that comes our best attempt to gather our favorite tracks and order them from best to, well, the very best. This collective is about as subjective as it gets - it's not something that necessarily represents what was popular or what certain sites wrote about. It's simply the music we loved in 2012. Without further ado, we present to you our list of the top 100 songs of 2012. While we had a blast putting this together, it didn't come without an argument or two. What [...]

Any artist can play a concert. It takes a special kind of artist to curate a festival. It takes something entirely different to shut down one of the most heavily trafficked roadways in the fifth biggest city in the country and set up a gigantic stage with wings coming out the sides. Jay-Z’s first annual Made In America Festival took over Philadelphia this past weekend, serving as another glorious manifestation of all the rapper’s successes over his career. Just when you think he couldn't climb any higher, he finds a way to take it just a little bit [...]

The inaugural Made in America music festival will webcast a number of this weekend's performances, including festival curator Jay-Z, Run-DMC, D'Angelo, Janelle Monáe, Miike Snow, Passion Pit, the Rick Ross-led Maybach Music Group, Odd Future, Santigold, DJ Shadow, Gary Clark Jr. and Dirty Projectors. You can watch live on YouTube , and listen live on Pandora .

Pop stars, rock stars, rap stars and not-yet-stars from all over the musical spectrum descended upon England this weekend for the vaunted Reading Festival. Up top you can watch the entire crowd singing along and nearly drowning out Azealia Banks as she performs her breakout banger "2123 on the festival's second day. Check out more of our favorite Reading performances from Passion Pit , Santigold and others after the jump. Old vets Green Day rattled [...]
In all my years as a festie, I've never been to a festival where gloves seemed like a perfectly sound idea. But San Francisco defies the logic of California (as comedian Marcus Monroe put it, "It's summer, so tell your fucking city that"), with cool days and downright cold evenings. Still, the City by the Bay plays one hell of a host. Coming from Boston, the honest politeness of the people here was shockingly apparent from the moment I stepped onto the BART. With sunny skies above, it was a warm welcome to the weekend ahead. Of course, [...]
Kicking off its fifth year, the Outside Lands Festival 2012 takes place this weekend in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Governors Ball doesn’t really feel like a festival. Maybe it’s the fact that none of the sets overlap, something that has it’s merits and issues, but most likely it’s the fact that for many of us, we go home at the end of the night. There's no camping, no wild late-night partying (of course, they did have some wild after parties at Brooklyn Bowl), there’s your bed at the end of the night. Let me tell you, having your own bed at the end of the night has its merits too. [...]
With a sea of neon shirts, jean shorts, face paint, and Ray Bans, Governors Ball 2012 was all that and a bag of kale chips.
The 2nd Annual Governors Ball Music Festival went down in style this past weekend on Randall’s Island in New York City. The two-day festival played host to nearly 50,000 people and boasted an eclectic roster split between two stages without any overlapping sets. Some of the artists on the lineup included Passion Pit, Modest Mouse, [...]

Pre-game for Governor's Ball with our list of artists to watch.

Living in Oakland for several years has taught me (at the very least) two things: what hipsters like and what hipsters hate. Fusion tea bars, high-waisted shorts, and “this great band that you probably haven’t heard of yet” have continued to be very popular this year, while one usual favorite’s name has become a target of blasé looks and exasperated eye-rolls. This name: Outside Lands. Since August of 2008, Outside Lands has been the premiere San Francisco music festival (rivaled [...]
