I know I am a little late on this, but here are the albums that I am looking forward to hearing the most. Please understand this is not my guess at what will be the best albums of 2012, or my attempt at finding the pulse of what the general public is most excited about. These the 12 albums that I am personally the most excited about. Also know that I have excluded several albums that have already been released that surely would have made this list, had I done a month ago, including the new ones by [...]

Sarah Jaffe is set to release her new full length studio album, The Body Wins , on April 24th on Kirtland Records. Catch Sarah live on select US dates including the Camayo Cruise with Lucinda Williams, The Civil Wars and more, a special Mercury Lounge Show, a West Coast stint with Guthrie and SXSW 2012. The new album was produced by John Congleton (St. Vincent, Explosions in the Sky, Wye Oak, etc.) and is the follow up to her critically acclaimed debut full-length Suburban Nature which [...]
A couple of months back, good ol' what's-his-name noted that Sarah Jaffe's latest, The Way Sound Leaves a Room, featured her take on Cold War Kids' "Louder Than Ever." And it's a very nice take... There seems to be a somber mood around this blog today. Life is busy and occasionally exhausting, and the news is forever disheartening. It doesn't help that it feels like 10 p.m. when it's only six. On days like today, I just want to unplug the computer and forget about the Internet, quite honestly. Hang out in my sweatpants, maybe, and read a book. I even did a Sudoku puzzle a couple hours ago. On a Wednesday evening. At the "medium" level. This is abnormal behavior for me, in case you're wondering. I'd like to dedicate Sarah Jaffe's [...]
Off a brand new EP entitled The Way Sound Leaves A Room, Sarah Jaffe gives us a song of the same name that might go down as a favorite for the year. "The Way Sound Leaves A Room" is gorgeous. But even more so is the cinematography done by Chris Phelps on the accompanying concert [...]

California's music scene receives it's fair share of praise, albeit at times undeservingly so, yet with this new track from Costa Mesa songstress Taphi , there's plenty of reason to celebrate her work. There's hints of Laura Marling and Sarah Jaffe in the delicately delivered vocals; two artists whom have numerous imitators but few who have perfected the art of sensual songwriting that originally made their inspirations so successful. I'm Losing Sleep finds Taphi weeping 'I don't know why you left my lips dry' in [...]

Words by Jim There's a couple places in the United States that have a fabled music scene that hipster mothers tell stories of to their hipster toddlers to help them fall asleep at night. Brooklyn comes to mind. That's easy. Portland? Yes, sure, absolutely. Austin is a must. Denton, Texas...excuse me. What? Seriously. Denton We're almost-in-Oklahoma, but this is definitely Texas", Texas. Rated the best music scene in 2008 by Paste Magazine (whatever that means), Denton has an eclectic collection of music and is producing some seriously good bands. The five-piece Seryn [...]

Sarah Jaffe Recently I had the chance to talk to Sarah Jaffe before her show at Local 506. We discussed everything from her current tour, to the recent re-release of her 2008 EP Even Born Again . Sarah mentioned everything from how she started, to her time with Kirtland Records , and labels reaction to the success of her debut album Suburban Nature . We also had the chance to talk about the process behind recording her upcoming EP The Way Sound Leaves a Room and her next full [...]

(Photo By: Dylan Hollingsworth from Jaffe's FB) Sarah Jaffe has expressed her love for dancy-pop although her music comes off as mellow-folk. For Billboard's Mashup Monday, Jaffe covered one of her favorite Swedish dance divas, Robyn. Sarah Jaffe - Hang With Me (Robyn Cover)
Here is DFW's own Sarah Jaffe on a session for Billboard performing her song "Clementine" (above) as well as a cover of Robyn's "Hang With Me" (below). Sarah could sign a public service announcement and I would love it.

Bluebird Theater | Denver, Colorado | 27 May 2011 | Full Set I don't think I'll ever forget the first time I saw Sarah Jaffe play in Denver. I was head-over-heels for her album, Suburban Nature , and was incredibly excited to hear her perform. Apparently the crowd at the Hi-Dive that night didn't feel the same way. Poor Sarah struggled to play over the talking and bar noises to an unreceptive audience. Let me make it clear that I don't think Sarah did anything wrong- the [...]

I have been a fan of the site Daytrotter for several years now. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Daytrotter, it is a music site that has a little studio they call The Horseshack in downtown Rock Island, IL. They invite bands to stop by in between shows while they are on tour to record a short little session, which is then put up on the site for free download along with a cartoon drawing of the artist and a short essay on the band and their music. Often the sessions are nothing more than spontaneous re-workings of [...]

So it's time to bring you the final installment and my absolute favorite songs of the year so far. I hope you guys have enjoyed listening to this list as much as I enjoyed putting together. Again I want to remind you that if you enjoy these songs, please go and purchase some of these albums. 5. The Decemberists - Down By The Water It's no sea shanty or civil war folk-lore, but this R.E.M. influenced rock tune is pretty incredible. I just can't get enough of this entire album. While most everyone [...]
We've been covering some the lesser known acts that performed just recently at the 2011 SXSW in Austin, Texas. So let's wrap things up with the final bit of the alphabet! It's the best and most fanciful bit of all. Q is for… Quadron This genre dancing duo from Denmark make some of the greatest [...]
