The soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever was the first vinyl album I remember owning, a Christmas gift in 1977. I had little interest in music at the time, but I imagine that lots of folks received that album, that Christmas season, from people who knew them well enough to feel compelled to give a gift, yet not well enough to not what the recipient might truly want. I received my copy from from an aunt. (she wasn't some cool, hip, younger aunt, but, rather, an older widow who swore like [...]

No jive talkin' - new Bee Gees doc as enlightening as it is irresistibly entertaining.

Today I am introducing a groovy new feature on the DSCOTECH blog. Every Saturday, from this day forth, I will present you all with a Disco inspired post. And if you don't like Disco music, well . . . there's something plain wrong with you. Whether it be some Golden Oldies or some brand spanking new Disco House, you'll see it here. I am excited for this weekly feature, as Disco music has been in my life since I was a wee-lad. So put them' bell bottoms on and let's start this one off with a bang! [...]

Do you have any fond memories of 1977's Saturday Night Fever ? A few years ago when I used to work for Shoppers Drug Mart as a cashier (sweet job by the way), I thought my shift started at 9am. When I got to work that morning, the schedule said 3pm. Since I was too lazy to subway back home (not to mention waste bus fare) I decided to lounge in the employee room. Conveniently enough, Shoppers Drug Mart had a rack of old movies. Awesomely, Saturday Night Fever was on that rack. It was [...]

. I caught this video last week, when it was first released and I'm really digging the concept. It has a very John Travolta in " Saturday Night Fever " vibe to it. I felt like Johnny 5 in Short Circuit when I watched this. It made me want to get up and dance and maybe even take some dancing lessons. I had no idea Dave 1 could move like this. I'm very impressed! . [...]

One of my favorite musical sub-genres (or maybe sub-sub-genre) is when modern musicians take classical music and put an updated spin on it. What might at first glance seem disrespectful can produce some intriguing sounds. It's long been a common practice among jazz musicians, and even has a name - "jazzin' the classics " - but in at least one instance it also invaded disco. Walter Murphy has been a fixture in music for a number of years, but for the early part of his career was pretty much behind the scenes. A talented keyboardist [...]

Chicago deejay Steve Dahl just wanted to blow up a few Bee Gees records. It was a riot. Literally. July 12 marked the 30-year anniversary of the infamous Disco Demolition Night , the flaming bookend to the "Disco Sucks!" movement started by Dahl back in the summer of 1979. Dahl would hold anti-disco events where boxes of records were blown to bits-it should be noted that Dahl was fired from Chicago's WDAI in 1978 after the station went to an all-disco format. He finally had his largest audience when he was allowed to blow up [...]
Oh man. Whose idea was it to let Simon Cowell in on a remake of seminal disco flick Saturday Night Fever ? (Well, now that I think about it... the whole thing was probably Cowell's idea. I had briefly forgotten that he runs the world these days.) British newspaper The Sun reports that Zac Efron is slated to star as Tony Manero, the role that made has-been Scientologist John Travolta a full-on cultural icon back in '77. Also notable: Timbaland is "in the frame to rework [...]
You know the trouble with rich men? It's not just that they have bad ideas, it's that they have the money to put those bad ideas into practice. So, having ruined Saturday night television, now Simon Cowell wants to ruin Saturday Night Fever : The millionaire music boss knows a great investment when he sees one. And by the sound of his plans for the remake he's landed yet another licence to print money. He has been in negotiations for weeks with legendary film producer ROBERT STIGWOOD, who owns the rights to the [...]

DJ Dan is, well, uh, you guessed it, a DJ. But that isn't everything this Olympia, Washington based dude does. When he's not behind the wheels of steel, he's producing bumpin' dance tracks and posing in blue button-downs. To show you what DJ Dan is all about, we're throwing three hot tracks in your direction. They range from his filtered and hard-hitting "Bam" to the flashy keyboard driven riffs of "Rock To The Rhythm." If these clips don't give you your fill of DJ Dan, hit up his [...]

Back in 1990, Seal released his first single with Adamski. The track, " Killer ," was his first huge hit, way before he dropped "Kiss from a Rose." Today we have a remix of Seal's first hot single from Matt Samuels & Abigail Bailey . Not only did they cover "Killer," they have several remixes on the release, including: Dan Mckie, George Carrasco, Nathan C & Harry Brown, and Roy McLaren. They turned Adamski's down-tempo track into reverberated dance floor anthem. If you dig it, pick up your [...]

I was really lucky to stumble upon Galaxy Comète Records , a label working hard to revive disco-house. Taking heavy influence from the solo works of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk, Galaxy has several EPs available for free download. Each artist on their roster samples old disco and funk records, laces them with hard-hitting drums, and filters them to life. Tonight's track is from Poka , a force to be reckoned with in the movement to revive french house. If you dig tonight's bit, [...]
What will we find this week? Welcome back to another edition of Flashion Backward, a UI feature that's the spiritual cousin of our recently debuted Flashion Forward. Here, we rifle through our treasure trove of interviews to fish out a vintage gem–the better to explore the strange vortex in which fashion and musicians meet. Onto this week's buried treat… Pop and world music maven Donna De Lory can seamlessly blend an intense and dizzying array of influences, effortlessly setting Indian mantras against modern beats without sounding like a generic purveyor of om-flecked massage parlor music. N.A.S.A. is the collaboration of Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon. These dudes are not known for their production work, but rather for the star-studded line-up on their debut release The Spirit of Apollo . This includes Del The Funkee Homosapien, DJ Qbert, George Clinton, RZA, Ghostface Killah, M.I.A., Spank Rock, and Santigold to name a few. Tonight's track is a remix of "Whachadoin?" by Villans . They have been making intense dance tracks for a while now, and this one doesn't disappoint. [...]
