Joss Whedon wins the Bradbury Award

Click here to view the embedded video. Joss Whedon wins the Bradbury Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America at the 2009 Nebula Award ceremony. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean that Dollhouse is going to get saved.  But still, that's become one of the best shows on television since the second half of its first season.

J.G. BALLARD 1930-2009

via ballardtribute Via BBC—author J.G. Ballard has died after what is being reported as a "long illness." Ballard was one of our favorite authors here at L.A. RECORD headquarters and we are very sad to wake up this Sunday morning and find him gone. In his honor we suggest re-reading "The Watchtowers" or "Build-Up" and listening [...]

I Like To Fall In Love

Van Scott was right on when he dropped me an email tonight suggesting that I might like these tracks. They're all remixes of the Drlkt Freddie track "Airtight" and they're all pretty sweet, each in their own way. I like the vocals because they're reminicsent of One More Time from Daft Punk's Discovery, and I'm sure that the Airtight track (particularly the Tronik Youth remix) would have fit perfectly in Interstella 555: Secret Star System. If you haven't seen that movie, you're missing out. Its probably the perfect combination of one of the greatest love stories [...]

Man or Astro-Man - What Remains Inside a Black Hole

Man or Astro-Man - What Remains Inside a Black Hole Man or Astro-man ? sounded like The Ventures after being anally probed by aliens and promptly dumped behind a Radio Shack. In fact, the band claims to be from outer space but rumor has it they surfed out of the same Auburn, Alabama scene as the Immortal Lee County Killers and The Quadrajets. Dropping science on top of surf guitars, MoAM toured the country with a wagonload of retro tech including theremins and even a homemade tesla coil which remarkably [...]

In Fett We Trust

In Fett We Trust Courtesy of Suckadelic comes this wonderful piece of religious iconography. I used to love Star Wars, and Boba Fett in particular. In fact, my 11-year-old self even had a letter published in Star Wars Insider magazine letting the world know how cool Fett was. He had at all: cool helmet, jet-pack, wrist-gun, mystery. He might not have gotten a lot of chicks, but that thought didn't really cross my mind back then. In the face of today's Master Chiefs, Dark Knights and assorted other Iron Men, he seems a bit outgunned and kinda lame. [...]

Early Reviews: JJ Abrams’s Star Trek screens in Austin

So Paramount pulled a fast one last night in Austin, Texas and instead of showing Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the Alamo Drafthouse treated the audience to JJ Abrams's Trek reboot in its entirety.  All in all, it seems as if most people felt this was a solid, breezy summer tentpole movie.  Exactly what you want, but unfortunately nothing more.  Neil Miller at Film School Rejects : “Some of the smartest work [Orci and Kurtzman have] done. They get [...]

Hunter Prey trailer

Hunter Prey centers around a group of elite intergalactic commandos that have crash-landed on a harsh and unknown planet while transporting an alien prisoner. Now they must track down and recapture the escaped creature, and their orders are to bring it in ALIVE. The soldiers begin to question their orders while finding themselves at a severe disadvantage, not being able to harm the prisoner. The team starts getting picked off, one by one, by their dangerous adversary, until the odds become even. With one soldier remaining, he’s faced with a decision. Does he risk his life [...]

Tauntaun Sleeping Bag

Tauntaun Sleeping Bag Man I wished I had this as a kid.  It certainly would have made reenacting Empire Strikes Back a bit easier.  From Think Geek : In the sub-zero wasteland of the planet Hoth, only the strong survive... and of course those lucky Jedi protected by the thick skin of a Tauntaun. Now after exhaustive movie viewing research and analysis ThinkGeek Labs has isolated the exact synthetic compounds needed to re-create Tauntaun fur. What have we done with this supreme knowledge? Created a Tauntaun sleeping bag of course. [...]

Terminator Timeline

Terminator Timeline If you're like me and a terminator junkie, you've probably at some point tried to figure out all the different timelines.  Each time the terminators go back to hunt John Connor the future is changed, creating branching futures all related to one another.  Seems that the nature of time is cyclical in this universe and the only way John Connor is going to change anything is to keep sending things back in time to change the future until there is a desirably outcome.  Anyway, the awesome geeks over at io9 have been making sense of [...]

Erotrash Girl

Erotrash Girl One of the most hilarious blogs that I've been following lately is definitely Erotrash . I'm pretty sure it is entirely in Italian, but you don't need to understand the language to know that all they do is post scans from vintage European science-fiction sex comics. Needless to say, it isn't exactly safe for work. The title of of the blog reminds me of one of my favorite Chicks On Speed songs, Eurotrash Girl. I also think that when I saw Chicks on Speed in Montreal about 6 or 7 years ago it was one [...]

Avatar

It's not like us to get way overexcited about a film, get spoon-fed outrageous hype which we take as gospel only to madly dissappointed when the final release doesn't meet our ridiculous expectations. Having said that, the tidbits coming out about Avatar make it sound like December 19, 2009 could be the first day of the rest of my life. "I couldn't tell what was real and what was animated–even knowing that the 9-ft.-tall blue, dappled dude couldn't possibly be real," Quittner said about the footage from Avatar that he saw. "The [...]

Battlestar Galactica Series Finale

Battlestar Galactica Series Finale I don't really have any complaints about last night's Battlestar Galactica series finale.  It was wholly satisfying on a visceral and emotional level.  There's always the fear of being disappointed, but that wasn't the case here.  If you're looking for reviews of the show, I suggest reading Annalee Newitz's over at io9 . But I want to suggest that there is a counter-story here, too, which relies on the idea that any technology sufficiently advanced looks like magic. Though our "angels" and "God" come dressed in the trappings of spiritualism, they could just [...]

SciFi Channel changing its identity

After 17 years on the air, Sci Fi Channel is changing it's name and doing away with it's iconic Saturn logo as seen right over there.  See it!  See it!  That's great logo work.    But, for a network best known for Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, and an assortment of ghost shows, reruns and made for television mutant animal movies you would think rebranding to encompass all aspects of the science fiction, fantasy, and other loosely affiliated genres would be a smart move.  Unless, of course, [...]

Katee Sackhoff Q&A at the Baghdad Theater, Portland, OR. 3-13-2009

Katee Sackhoff Q&A at the Baghdad Theater, Portland, OR. 3-13-2009 ( photo courtesy of Shetha ) Katee Sackhoff rolled into Portland on Friday night for a lengthy question and answer session dropping curse words like a sailor and nearly causing a nerd riot outside the Baghdad Theater¹. Sackhoff, who's originally from the Portland-area, stopped by as a thanks for the crowds showing up week after week to watch BSG on the big screen. It helped that her mother's birthday was the next day, so it was like killing two birds. There were lots of "Iloveyouyou'rethebest" types of [...]

Be/Non releases trailer for upcoming film

Brodie Rush's Be/Non is making a film to coincide with its upcoming release, A Mountain of Yeses, out as a vinyl/download package sometime in May. The film's live-action protagonist is Steve Tulipana.... Continue reading "Be/Non releases trailer for upcoming film" >

Oh God! Why Am I So Excited About Star Trek?

I have never seen an episode of Star Trek.  I've always laughed at Trekkies, not with them.  But, I have to admit that this trailer makes me want to see J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie.  Abrams has definitely updated the franchise and is opening it to a much larger audience (like Star Trek needed a larger audience) while still maintaining the heart and soul of the brand.  Behold, geeks.  Really fucking kick ass geeks. I hung out with Zach and Chris, the two leads in the film at a Global [...]

[New Trailer] Star Trek

The two moments in this trailer that have me geeked out are when the planet folds into itself and when James T. Kirk sits down in the Captain's chair for the first time. Star Trek is in theaters on May 8.

Battlestar Galactica’s anti-feminism

On the surface, the show seems to be a feminist coup: the president is female, the best fighter pilot is a tough-talking woman, etc.  It's a show that seems plush with strong, female roles.  But take a closer look at Battlestar Galactica.  There is something else at work here.  The most retrograde character is Cally, an air-maintenance specialist on the flight deck. For years, she's harbored a girlish crush on her boss, Chief Tyrol, to no avail, until, at last, a breakthrough happens thanks to a broken [...]
