My guesses about the future are almost always wrong, and here's one of them: I always thought that digital music would lead to big changes in how albums were constructed. I figured that bands that stuck to a pop or rock sound would go mostly with singles and more frequent, smaller releases, and that full albums would be longer, would be either more conceptual or spottier (the 'great singles with filler' albums) and be a wide variation of musical styles. But 2011 has produced a bunch of fantastic albums that are none of those things. They stick to [...]

Contributed by Chris Gedos Considering there's more bands than people these days, I'm afraid to say that I'd never listened to The Sea and Cake if only because I wasn't quite sure what to make of their name. Band names with lowercase articles are highly uncommon in today's indiedom. I still think The Sea and Cake sounds more like a collection of short stories by the most recent fiction MFA from Hunter College, but presented with the opportunity to see the Chicago collective at [...]

So, we meet again, Crocodile. After years of not venturing through your Belltown doors, I have found myself admiring the finest bar bathroom in Seattle various sonic offerings over the past few weeks. During Halloween time, it was Glenn or Glennda and their riotous Misfits cover band brew of mayhem. A few weeks ago it was [...]
Ageless and ever-groovy, The Sea and Cake transfixed loyal fans at Great American Music Hall. Too bad the sound guy there should be fired.

The Sea and Cake has been a pivotal influence to the indie alternative scene since they began creating music in 1994, as their subtle guitar riffs, lively drum beats, and emotional, poetic lyrics have become indicative of the genre. Building on the release of this year's The Moonlight Butterfly , which is the band's ninth album, The Sea and Cake played a full range of jewels from their catalogue, evidencing the best of their melodramatic indie and the depth of their wizened musical talent. "Up on the North Shore" was one particular highlight. Given its [...]

The Sea and Cake ::: Photo by Megan Holmes As the opening guitar intro to "Monday" creeps slowly from my central processing unit into my cheap Sony headphones, I can't help but smile and nod my head to its jazzy, infectious groove. In a world where nothing seems to be certain (Except for the retail hysteria [...]

Entering the Black Cat main stage Thursday evening, one was thrown into 1997. The fans were dressed in over-sized sweaters and ill-fitting jeans, most of which they probably bought in 1997. The Sea and Cake were dressed similarly and took the stage quietly. The cool kids had stayed home, leaving room for everyone else to spread out, ensuring everyone quite enough personal space. This isn't to say that the club was empty, it wasn't, there was just an awareness about everyone as not to be too close to anyone else if they could [...]

Photo by Megan Holmes, image from Thrill Jockey. As someone who is unacquainted with The Sea and Cake's previous output (and there has been a lot since their formation in the mid '90s), and whose first impression of them was listening to their 6-track LP, Moonlight Butterfly , my best description of their sound is: an extremely distant derivative of the repetitive art rock of the '60s and '70s, namely that written by bands like King Crimson, (specifically the songs "Discipline" and "Three of a Perfect Pair"). S and C seem also like a smoothed [...]

[Photos courtesy of Patrick Proctor at Hippies Are Dead ] "We feel like we're in the Deep South," said The Sea and Cake 's Sam Prekop somewhere mid-set at the Bowery Ballroom this Tuesday. "And that's a compliment." No doubt Sam was referring to the level of enthusiasm from this weeknight crowd, including at least one audience member who seemed to think it was a Motley Crue concert. To hear a girl screaming "Bring the fuckin' heat!" in between songs at an almost professorially mild-mannered, jazz-influenced Chicago indie act was certainly a new one [...]
So last week, we posted about the upcoming show at Headliners this Saturday . Now, we're giving away tickets to the show to some lucky winners! That's right, that's plural. WinnerS. We have THREE (3) pairs (6) of tickets (tix) to see The Sea and Cake w/ Imaginary Cities and Ben Purdom. Saturday night, Nov. 12. Doors at 8, show at 9. Last night at Bowery Ballroom, The Sea and Cake delivered a lengthy set, complete with two encores, to a crowd of devoted fans. The show was part of their most recent North American tour, and was devoid of all pomp and circumstance. The band was traveling with no merch, and had a stage show that (as per usual) consisted of no more than four dudes playing their songs on stage. The caveat was thus: those dudes can play their music very, very well. [...]

The Sea And Cake 's ninth and latest collection of songs, The Moonlight Butterfly , welcomes new listeners and veteran fans with equal accessibility. Though the Chicago-based indie group has credited a wide range of influences since its 1994 self-titled debut—citing everything from Brazil to Africa to US Top 40 and back again—the band's lengthy discography has nonetheless maintained a certain relentless sameness in sound. That's not to say the music is all peaceful fluff, though; The Sea And Cake makes several attempts to shift between soft, vague harmonies and hard, concrete patterns. The 10-minute long track "Inn Keeping," for [...]

The Sea and Cake kicked off the their tour this weekend for their latest album, The Moonlight Butterfly . "We just played four shows in South America. I think the upcoming shows will be different," said Sam Prekop , frontman of one of the longest-lasting and better known indie bands of the nineties. "Over the years we've always had periods of hiatus, we always push it to the point where it's not insane to get back together as a band, we can still do it, there's not lost connection, we don't have to [...]

Toronto - The Sea And Cake are the sort of band that attracts a certain kind of fan. They put on the kind of show where a decent percentage of those in the audience are watching with intent admiration as they play. And with good reason - these guys can certainly play. The Chicago post-rockers have been at it since 1994 plying their brand of slightly jazzy, somewhat mellow tunes. Not that it was all that mellow. I wouldn't exactly describe any of their songs as rockers, but there was a certain amount of aggressiveness in some of the [...]
![RUBIK, FUN, THE DRUMS [SUGGESTED NYC CONCERTS]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3844059_lg.jpg)
There's a ton of great shows in NYC this week, creating an interesting dilemma for those that need to select just one or two. The Drums , fun. , Young Man , Lucius , ARMS , Kurt Vile & the Violators , and Cloud Nothings are all playing our fine city, but it's still our 2nd B-Day Bash that I'm most excited for. Featuring Rubik , Ambassadors , Yellowbirds , E-603 , and For a Minor Reflection , Manhattan venue Pianos will [...]
