The final day of Leeds Festival 2011 brought with it dryness and a relative calm that I hadn't seen all weekend, no frantic rushing to tents. Just good music. Another surprise guest during this weekend Reading and Leeds was the living Led Zeppelin legend that is John Paul Jones . He joined his previous collaborator and all round cool guy Seasick Steve for a performance of "It's A Long Way" and the BBC are feeling generous and have hosted it so we know it's good and won't be taken down by the internet police. Optimus Alive! went down in Passeio Marítimo de Alges in Portugal over the weekend. Headliners included Coldplay and Jane's Addiction. The riverside fest had a nice mix of nostalgia (Stooges, Blondie) and fresh electronic sounds (James Blake, Duck Sauce) too, but while Primal Scream got to play Screamadelica front to back, the Pretty Reckless didn't hit the stage at all due to " structural problems ." Teaming up with Jack White has been a great thing for Seasick Steve, because otherwise, how else would he have gotten headlining set at iTunes Festival? Maybe on his own, I guess, but when you can perform one song with help from Alison Mosshart, White, and John Paul Jones of Led Fucking Zeppelin on bass, you're worth any big slot in any festival. Especially when it's a ripping take of "Write Me a Few Lines" that is full of smiles from the performers and massive guitar riffs. Just the best, here.

Seasick Steve just had the best weekend ever. Once a busker on the Paris Metro, the Third Man Record-signed , three-string guitar-playing blues musician found himself joined on stage by Jack White, Alison Mosshart, and Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones in London on Saturday night. He then followed that up with a guest appearance at Foo Fighters' show in Buckinghamshire, England last night, where he, Jones, and Dave Grohl played the track "Back in the Doghouse", from Steve's recently released LP You Can't Teach an Old Dog New Tricks .
