When you've finally pieced your nest together and found the tree that you're rather complacent with, the seasons change and knock you off your branch. A force tears your abode into pieces and you're forced to scavenge for the new bits and pieces. It's even more jarring when that nest rests in your mind. How does one rebuild the fort that consists of the feelings you get from your surroundings, your home, your family, your friends, your career? There's only one course of action-step out there and do it. Things. Anything, as much as you can. Put yourself into every [...]
(photo: Eva Michon) The setting is last summer's garbage strike in Toronto. The players are one Sebastien Grainger, formerly one-half of Death From Above 1979 and currently the front man for Sebastien Grainger and the Mountains , and Josh Reichmann, formerly of Tangiers and currently the front man for Josh Reichmann Oracle Band . The result is called Bad Tits , which they say comes from "a colloquial expression intended to express misfortune" as in "Did you hear about Sammy? I heard he got busted by the cops...bad [...]

Tonight's show at the Metro was sold out, sweaty, and eager to welcome Metric back to Chicago. Support was lent by Sebastien Grainger who is a fellow Canadian and neighbor of Metric and Broken Social Science guitarist James Shaw. Alas, I happened to arrive halfway through Sebastien Grainger and the Mountains ' rockin set, MUCH to my dismay. (The Metro, once again, put forth a misleading set list, with three bands on the marquee starting at 7:30 and doors open an hour earlier. I really should learn that it means the first band begins when [...]

Sebastien Grainger for the rest of his career will always be compared for his work with Jesse Keeler and the duo that was Death From Above 1979. Three years removed, Keeler has gone onto be part of electro duo MSTRKRFT while Grainger has gone more onto the rock aspect of things. I first saw him back in 2007 where he and his band The Mountains played a rough set covering for the Stills. It seemed more like an awesome noise-rock outfit now. He has since rounded out the sound going from between dance punk to punk rock. [...]

I had been looking forward to seeing this line up for the last couple of weeks. I had heard a lot about Sebastien Grainger from friends and Dinosaur Bones has been on my iTunes list for a while. I love having friends who will pass stuff over to me if they think I will like it and Dinosaur Bones was a gift I really appreciated. If I'm not familiar with an artist I like going to the shows without any previous knowledge of what their music is like, that way I can get an unbiased opinion and [...]

Over The Top Festival kicks off on May 21st and ends on May 23rd (excluding The Book of Judith which runs from May 20th-May 31st), includes Music, Film and Theatre. The festival will mark it's eighth year since starting in 2002. We'll be covering the music portion of the festival (duh?) in addition to reviewing the Book Of Judith which is scored by The Sunparlour Players' Andrew Penner (which we just reviewed Wave North yesterday). Speaking of the Book Of Judith, I'm a BIG fan of theatre - most of my [...]

Happy April Fool's Day, peeps. At least Trent Reznor still has a good sense of humor, and it has a name... Strobe Light [ NIN ] The Empty Set - As Neat as a New Pin Review [ Song, by Toad ] Here's a rad video for Sebastien Grainger & the Mountains ' "Who Do We Care For?" that the Buzzgrinder can't tell what is "real" or not [ Buzzgrinder ] Kathleen Edwards and City and Colour at The [...]
I'm pretty sure the fire in this video is real, but about half of it looks like it might be fake. I expect more out of you, Sebastien Grainger . After all, you spell your name weird. Sebastien Grainger & the Mountains - Who Do We Care For?

Jeaneen Lund The old inbox was overflowing with local concert announcements yesterday - certainly makes cobbling together a post easy. In chronological order... Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains , who just played an instore at Sonic Boom last week , are heading out on a European tour through most of this month but will be having a little homecoming party at the Horseshoe on March 6. Tickets $10.50. Grainger has a little chat with Spoonfed . MP3: Sebastien Grainger & The [...]
Canadian musician Sebastien Grainger is making his mark on the music industry with his new album. Former singer and drummer of Death From Above 1979 recently released his first full-length solo album in October 2008 on Saddle Creek Records titled Sebastien Grainger & the Mountains. The album consists of twelve tracks that embrace the raw energy of a live show, making the listening experience quite

So in a lame attempt to put a post out, I give you a mish mash of Canadian artists over the past few years. Some newer than others....some better than others...overall a pretty decent Friday I must say. Now, don't get all "these are simply the mainstream indie-Canadian bands" on me...I didn't say it was cutting edge or even new, just solid. For some reason, I still really enjoy "Hotel" from BSS and that Jill Barber track is more than I remember it...GLS will be having a new album soon, so why not something from their first album? I am [...]

Marylou Flamingo. So, I wrote a fair bit about Soundscapes in-stores last week . Since that post, they've announced three new dates: Feb. 4th - Bruce Peninsula (@ 7pm - These guys are terrific ), Feb 10th - Hylozoists (@ 6pm - also a very highly rated band), and Feb 24th - Gentleman Reg (@ 6pm - [...]

Catherine Losing For The Records pointed out a curious concert listing for UK indie-dance act Friendly Fires at the website for Beggars Canada - it puts the St Alban's trio in town on March 31, but only narrows the venue down to two possibilities - Mod Club or Lee's Palace. So all I can accurately say is that they'll be in Toronto at an approximately 500-capacity venue on that date. And wherever they are, odds of a dance party breaking out are pretty much one to one. Personally, [...]
In our opinion, here's the best songs that we wrote about in 2008. Below is the list, click here to open the player (popup) . All The Pictures - Catherine of Aragon Jonquil - Lions Ladyhawk - I Don't Always Know What You Are Saying Okay - My Ra Ra Riot - Each Year (RAC Remix) School Of Language - Rockist Part 1 The Joy Formidable [...]

A couple of weeks ago former Death From Above 1979 singer/drummer Sebastien Grainger played Beat Kitchen with his supporting band The Mountains (or if you're French-Canadian Les Montagnes). Grainger is touring in support of his debut solo effort (s/t) which was released October 21st on Nebraska's Saddle Creek Records. Grainger wrote and performed nearly all the parts on the record with the exception of a few songs that were recorded as a full band. jinglebellrock.ca A little too much going on right now for proper posting, so you'll forgive me if I just ride out the next couple days by partaking in the spirit of the season and giving some stuff away? But good stuff coming, I just need to work on it. Jingle Bell Rock is the creatively-named tour featuring Can-indie luminaries Metric , Tokyo Police Club , The Dears and Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains on a ten-date mission to rock out, spread holiday cheer and raise funds [...]
The holidays are definitely coming early to us here in IA land. In just the first few days of the month, some great acts are playing shows in the area. Check out some of the highlights: If you don't have your tickets for the back-to-back Vampire Weekend and The Teenagers shows Monday and Tuesday at 9:30 Club, assume the position and find the usual shady means of getting your way in. These shows are completely sold out. In the mean time, enjoy the videos. [...]
