With the festive season over and an amazing trip to the wild west over, it's about time to get back into allidoislisten . 2010 was a pretty rad year for music, hopefully 2011 can top it. When i finally get it done, the Top 10 Albums of 2010 will be up here for you to check out. The end of, and subsequent, beginning of a new year is a fantastic time to discover new artist with all these festivals and reviews happening. Although these guys have been favorites of mine for a very long time, i [...]
Milagres have been floating around for a while - but coinciding with a name change during 2009 from 'The Secret Life of Sofia' to the Portuguese word for 'miracle' - the New York City five piece dropped an EP - "Empty Sleeves" in 2009 and an LP "Seven Summits" in May 2010. Having picked up both releases at the same time, its pretty clear to me that while the four tracks on Empty Sleeves are good, Seven Summits contains a selection that is simply stunning. The quality throughout both releases is so good I can't believe i'm not reading about [...]

MP3: Milagres - "Outside" What is always interesting about "Outside" is its seasonal changes. The way they run parallel to our own lives -- both in mood and direction. "Outside" is a world where one can find anything he or she so desires. Some things are haunting while others are disarming and captivating with their beauty. In this case, "Outside" is just that, with chilling vocal harmonies, acoustic fingerpicking, and sparse percussion. Milagres' "Outside" pays homage to the wonders of nature coming from an album that [...]
The Secret Life of Sofia has shed it skin to become the Brooklyn-based Milagres, an indie folk rock-pop band that is re-releasing their album Seven Summits as they finish up recording a new one due to be out later this year. The awesome aspect of Seven Summits is that it was recorded on an abandoned farm in Massachusettes and is a collection of stories picked up from mountain guides, fellow

It has been a bit of a crazy year for the New York band known as Milagres . For starters the five piece went through a bit of a metamorphosis, changing their name from The Secret Life of Sofia only months after being name The Deli Magazine's third best band in New York. I suppose the band weren't content with being known as the 3rd best anything and only weeks after releasing the fantastic Empty Sleeves EP they renamed themselves and set to work tweaking their sound and style. The result is something [...]

10. The Secret Life of Sofia Empty Sleeves ; It has been a year of change for The Secret Life of Sofia. After kicking off the year by being named the third best band in New York City by Deli Magazine (Vivian Girls and Chairlift took the top 2 spots), the band released this four song EP and then promptly changed their name. Now known as Milagres the band continued in the tradition of their well received record Seven Summits , making fantastic indie pop music with depth and a fantastic songwriting gift. The songs [...]

Last year , EAR FARM featured 43 bands in our Band of the Week feature... ranging from relative unknowns (such as The Laughing and Bombadil ) to interviews with indie-rock legends (see The Wedding Present and Silver Jews ) to everything else in between. In 2009 we set out to one-up ourselves, and as it turns out we've done just that. This year EAR FARM featured 45 bands as Band of the Week, again flexing our genre chops across the entire spectrum of what we consider to be the best music being [...]

[Note] Yeah, I know it's not really a competition, but I can't help but cast it as one. Here is how the Pop Tarts Suck Toasted vs. The Music Slut competition unfolded... [Tweet] # #cmj09 :: no twittering in the cakeshop basement, so the next tweet will condense the little girls set [Tweet] # #cmj09 :: little girls sounding surfy :: vocals so not distorted :: band should consider synchronized dance moves [Downloadable] Growing (mp3) by Little Girls [Postpunk Dancey Photo] [...]

If it's mid-October in New York City, then it's CMJ Music Marathon time... five days and nights of music, film, informative panels, and parties that guarantee a good time, if your idea of a good time involves nonstop live shows from up-and-coming musicians from a variety of genres. Thing is, since you're reading EAR FARM, we're going to go ahead and assume that CMJ 2009 is your idea of a good time. Ours too. And it just so turns out that fourteen of our previously featured Bands of the Week are playing the festival [...]

Day two of Northside featured some show-hopping – well, a little bit of show-hopping. My main focus that evening was EarFarm 's showcase at Spike Hill , although I had my eye on a few other shows, too. Unfortunately, my notes on this night are rather meager, so you're going to have to enjoy all the pretty pictures instead. Before the festival started, members of Coyote Eyes contacted me and sent along some songs, which is a generally lovely thing to do, and so I looked forward to seeing them live. Alas, [...]

This past Friday night, EAR FARM joined a multitude of other bloggers, record labels, websites, promoters, bands, and wonderful people from The L Magazine , in putting on the inaugural edition of the Northside Festival in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. Our showcase was at the fantastic Spike Hill and featured (bias alert) the greatest lineup of any single showcase during the entire festival. Thanks to everyone who came out, and especially to all of the bands who played. It was a wonderful show. Check out three pictures, and an MP3, from each [...]
