It's only been a little while since my last mixtape , but really September and October can be seen as part one and part two of the same mix. This one starts out with some soul and then movies into indie rock and folk. It's a good one... Go ahead and check out the playlist (below) or the liner notes . Rural Alberta Advantage by ipickmynose "Wow" "...wow. That was ... great." I was backstage at the Bottom of the Hill for the ipickmynose presents show with the Rural Alberta Advantage. It was just me, Nils and a guy named Travis from KALX -Amy and Paul had gone back to their hotel to change. Travis had asked Nils to do a quick acoustic song to accompany the interview they just did and after a brief misstart Nils stunned me with a version of "In the [...]

A seriously deep modern soul/synth boogie record here from San Francisco circa mid 80's. There is debate over the year of release as it is not listed on the sleeve. I would lean towards '87 if I had to make an estimate but one thing is for certain, everything about this LP from the crusty production to the sleeve is just so dusted and killer. If you live in the Bay Area and spend enough time in the thrift stores, you might just dig up this private press gem on Treasure Records . Here are a few of the [...]

One may wonder how I'm so lucky. I often wonder the same thing. A great going away party has all your friends, plenty of good conversation, and maybe some beer if you're into that sort of thing. Add to that an intimate, acoustic performance by one of your favorite musicians and it's really hard to describe how amazing the outcome is. John Vanderslice ( myspace ) did just that for my going away part. He and Jamie Riotto (on upright bass) played about an hour with no mics or amplification whatsoever. The gathered audience, [...]

This is emphatically not a return to form. I've been sharing songs with friends and I thought it was a bit silly to not share them here too. colo(u)rful houses in Bo Kaap I quite like this Alberta Cross song. The whole album is good, too, though I don't love every song. Alberta Cross - Low Man (mp3) Volcano Choir is a side project of Bon [...]

Starting with an impromptu invitation to John Vanderslice four years ago, I hosted a string of a dozen and an half bands on KZSU , including some of my favorite local bands. I've decided to compile some of my favorite songs from those sessions into a digital album that I'm offering here for free . I'm really excited about this and I hope you enjoy it half as much as I am. The download includes mp3s of all the songs, the album art as a jpg and a special cut-out [...]
Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I've collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their "song obsessions of the week." Quite often it's easy to explain why the song is good; it's much hard to explain why we're obsessed. Maybe you'll become obsessed with one of these. - Adrian ( me ): John Vanderslice - Dead Slate Pacific (mp3) [...]

the Dodos at the Independent There were a couple good albums streaming for free in their entirety. I recommend checking them out. the Dodos Time to Die Their third album is being released in physical form in September but the digital release is at the end of July. I've listened to it a few times through and it's good. While there are definitely duds (mostly I'm thinking of "This is a Business"), but there are also songs that show the band [...]

Okay, it's just preposterous to call this a June mixtape. But I have something planned for July already. You can download the zip file with the following: 1. mp3s of the songs 2. liner notes (pdf) 3. playlist files (iTunes txt file and an m3u file) (for the iTunes file, simply import all the songs to your library and then go to File->library->import playlist and then select the song list (the txt file). you should now have the 2009june in your iTunes with all the songs in the correct order). For the latest ipickmynose presents show, the Rural Alberta Advantage ( myspace ) and Half-handed Cloud ( myspace ) played the Bottom of the Hill last Thursday. Okay was scheduled to be the middle band but had to cancel due to illness. Half-handed Cloud went on a bit later than the original start time due to the schedule only having two bands instead of three. The growing crowd was getting a bit restless. John Ringhofer played a half [...]

On Thursday I saw the Tallest Man on Earth at the Independent. Nathaniel Rateliff and the Wheel from Denver opened. As I walked into the club, I saw that tables were laid out, covering most of the floor. I'd been to partially seated shows at the Indie before but I did not expect this show to be seated. It definitely changes the dynamic of the show to have people seated and spaced out as opposed to crunched up against the stage. [...]

Here are a bunch of links and thoughts and things that have come up over the last few days. - Yup, Michael Jackson died. I've been pondering whether to post about it. If you want a proper tribute and a truly excellent MJ mix, head to Soul Sides . I think something that people do realize and what I think is most amazing is that Jackson holds the record for best selling album of all time by a factor of >2X . That is, if the second best [...]
