Like a mirage, Shadows On Stars new video "When It Builds" is a naturally optical phenomenon seen through the innocent eyes of a young girl as she comes upon a mask in a forest. Or maybe it's more like a dream, or a "through the looking glass" scenario where successions of sensations occur, albeit voluntary. Nonetheless, it's a picturesque and fantastical soiree framed with vibrant characters and Mother Nature's finest furnishings and a fun tale, and song, to enjoy before the young girl's mask is taken off and the adventure vanishes. Portland based indie-pop duo Shadows on Stars just dropped this whimsical video earlier today. Director David Helman's interpretation of "When It Builds" has somewhat of a Midsummer's Night Dream feel to it, only with a more modern twist, of course. After all, we don't seem to recall any champagne showers in Shakespeare's classic. If there were, we might have paid a little more attention when we read it back in High School. This track is off of their self titled, debut LP, which can be picked up here .
Shadows On Stars won us over with their debut album , and they're set to have a busy 2013 with a tour and another release, which they're currently working on in the studio. Before the year burns out, they've revisited their debut for a visual accompaniment to "When It Builds." Life may be full of Mystrys but very few of them sound as good as the London based three piece of the same name. Raw, urgent and inventive, MYSTRYS craft a sound that sits comfortably between noise-pop and early post-punk. More importantly the outcome perfectly straddles the line between edgy, abrasive instrumentation and pop sentiment. The band have self-released their first single ‘Normals/Shadows’ which was released on 3rd September via their own label, Psychic Healing Network. The single can be picked up on cassette and downloaded for free from here .
Our favourite quirky French duo the Peneolopes are back with a new remix of fellow London buzz-band Glitches. We have to admit we've never heard of Glitches before, but that's probably because were not massively up-to-date on our indie. The Penelopes add their trademark disco bass and icy keys over the strained vocal to create a lovely melancholic piece of shiny indie synth pop. It takes a couple of listens, but once it clicks you'll know doubt be humming it back to yourself - which is always a good sign.
