The Bad Seeds , Push the Sky Away . Aunque la atracción principal no es esa, sino una mood wheel o rueda de [...]
The first band I saw this year, marching along at 6th and San Jacinto at midnight SXSW is the world's best music festival if only for the sheer volume of superb choice. On any given day/night/early morning, I was staring at a ridiculously, totally stupidly embarrassing list of terrific musical choices. I was very cognizant that this spring break for grownups is one of the richest weeks of the year for me. I survived this, my "senior" (fourth) year, and came back bone-crushingly exhausted but smiling widely (and bruised without remembering precisely how I [...]
SxSW 2012 Day 2 Images by 5342 Studios Fiona Apple for the NPR show at Stubb's Alabama Shakes Alabama Shakes set download at NPR Dan Deacon [...]
all photos by Jim Bennett On Wednesday night, Austin's famed Stubb's BBQ played host to an amazing NPR SXSW showcase that featured Fiona Apple , Sharon Van Etten , Dan Deacon , the Alabama Shakes , and Andrew Bird . SXSW is the only place where so many talented, stylistically diverse artists can be found on the same billing, and a line of people hoping to catch some of the action extended around the block in front of Stubb's gorgeous outdoor venue. This wasn't an ordinary SXSW showcase, however - NPR [...]
The Chevin have all the tools to be a huge breakout band out of the UK. They've got the presence, the songs ("Champion" is a hit), and as we witnessed last night at Latitude 30, a great live show. In addition to the overall perfomance (which came off really well, the band's songs translated very nicely live), the real standout was frontman Coyle Girelli. This guy can sing and from look to stage quality, ticks all the right "great UK band frontman" boxes. With the right push & support The Chevin are poised to be really something special. Keep them [...]

The menu includes Andrew Bird, Sharon Van Etten, Dan Deacon, and The Alabama Shakes. Fiona Apple will also be performing, though she will not be included on the webcast. You can watch all the action here and check out the set times below. The action begins at 9pm CST. Sharon Van Etten 9pm CT Dan Deacon 10pm [...]
A number of bands will get a pop from performances at SXSW this week. But there's already been a lot of buzz around some fine albums released this year before the big tilt in Austin. Grimes and Cloud Nothings made two of my favorite albums this year and they couldn't be more different. Grimes' Visions is insanely catchy electronic pop. The songs will stick in your head for weeks. Grimes is Claire Boucher, a Canadian singer who turns 24 this weekend. Boucher had [...]
In this edition: Pick up the dub-step/hip hop compilation from Philosophy Major, go see France Rocks Austin at SXSW, and this week's videos. Philosophy Major - Altered States Vol. 1 Philosophy Major is a collective of North Carolina dub-step, hip hop and trip hop artists who have released a free compilation called Altered States Volume 1 . It's a great sampling of material from artists who call the underground, home. Fans of the [...]

Hey family. It's that "special" of the year again when the glitterati of the music industry descend on ATX to slap each other five, collect VIP wrist bands, and hopefully catch some cool bands. Planning for SXSW can be daunting ask. The sheer number or bands, shows, parties, etc is ginormous. SXSW planning fatigue is real but b3sci is here to help! We're setting you up with all our picks for can't miss sets and showcases. Lego! TUESDAY Showcases where [...]

Beer will be guzzled and meat will be smoked in immense quantities while journalists and music fans trip about the sunny terrain of the weirdest city in the South.
SXSW is right around the corner (March 9 - 18) and the music schedule is is now live. Other than CMJ , this is by far the best music festival in the US. I don't have the time and/or patience to list the hundreds of bands announced to play, but some of my favorites include: Alabama Shakes, Built to Spill, The Magnetic Fields, Talib Kweli, The Drums, Bear In Heaven, Deerhoof, The War on Drugs, Miniature Tigers, SBTRKT, Best Coast, M. Ward, Youth Lagoon, Tennis, Dan Deacon, Lana [...]
I've been to South by Southwest a few times in the past several years, the experiences of which have been experiments in the cause and effect of not planning for something that requires concise preparation. Results have been varied, the luck of the draw sometimes providing me with posh hotel accommodations and free drinking, and other times leaving me broke and homeless. In many ways, entering SXSW unprepared is like traveling Europe without a set plan: it ultimately transcends “good” or “bad”; rather, the inarticulable thrill of the unknown and the extreme isolation of knowing you’re an outsider combine to [...]

It has taken us just about a week to come to a reasonable consensus about who we loved the most during SXSW. We compiled our lists based on individual preferences and tried to give you a broad range of acts, so now you can consider our SXSW coverage complete with our list of the ten best bands we saw. Saturday marks the last full day of the barrage of official and unofficial South By Southwest showcases. Check out this video from IFC 's SXSW coverage of one my favorite new female songwriters of 2010, Sharon Van Etten. She performs the track "Don't Do It" from her album Epic. Her words are strikingly revealing as she transports you into the inner workings of her mind.
