This year's Juno Awards take place in Ottawa on 4/1, and today the nominees for their annual prizes were revealed. A lot of familiar names - Drake, Feist, Avril Lavigne - headline the nominees. Something tells me the Black Keys won't be happy with a selection or two. Two Christmas albums made the "Best Album" list, so either it was a bad year for Canadian albums or the best year for Christmas albums ever! Shatner hosts, obviously. Scan the nominees below. In the next few days, when I gather up too many $100 dollar bills, I will spend them all on a fucking ticket. A ticket, my friends, to a motherfucking festival. Pardon the language but I tell you what, my ass is jazzed. After a 2011 spent purchasing tickets (Cotton Jones, The Sheepdogs, Iron & Wine, and GAYNGS) and then realizing as dates approached that holy shit dude, I'm a single mom with a job, there's NO WAY I'm making that gig, I had to bail. All that money down the drain, all those good times enjoyed by [...]

Todd V Wolfson I feel that I should say up front that any reservations I have about Kathleen Edwards and her work are entirely my own issues. Since her 2002 debut Failer , I've enjoyed her honest, roots-rock fare but always felt like I expected more from her creatively even though across her first three albums, she'd never shown any signs that she had ambitions beyond being a good singer-songwriter. That said, the fact that she spent her downtime following 20082s Asking For Flowers [...]
That time of year has approached again; the time when I look back over past new years resolutions , usually with a sigh or a chuckle, and a promise to try harder . There are, of course, those lucky few who get to cross something off and even set the bar higher for next year. A group of Saskatoon rockers that I'm sure did just that in 2011 are, The Sheepdogs . As far as topping it this year, the band will have their hands full; 2011 saw The Sheepdogs [...]

Roughly two and a half years ago we reported that Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt), Jim James (MMJ) and Will Johnson (Centro-matic) had headed into the studio to a record a new batch of songs inspired by Woody Guthrie's unrecorded lyrics, a la Billy Bragg and Wilco's amazing Mermaid Avenue records. According to Paste , the trio were personally invited by Guthrie's granddaughter, Nora, to sift through the songwriter's notebooks and scratch pads to gain insight on the artist and his unfinished work. On February 28, the trio will [...]

Coming off a year of traveling throughout the United States and finally making Elite status with Air Canada (one of my greatest accomplishments to date), I have gained a new found appreciation for Canada and the music that comes out of the great white north. As an ode to Canada I have curated a list of my top 5 Canadian albums from 2011, complete with witty commentary and what the band "sounds like". Sheepdogs – Learn and Burn Sounds like: The 70's In one year this bearded, 70's inspired band [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , The Hit List Wonderbread Tapes Cats were the "it" symbol of cool last year, especially in the indie-rock world . Best Coast , Wavves , the Klaxons and more capitalized on the trend, putting cats on album covers, in music videos and, as Lady Gaga did, even wearing a Hello Kitty dress. But as the music world fell in [...]

A few weeks ago, @Sawyer_w took me to see Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears at The Fillmore. I had only listened to a few tracks and had no idea what to expect. The crowd was considerably older, which is surprising since the band was signed at SXSW in 2009. The opening band, The Sheepdog s, put on a stellar performance. Their crazy guitarist is certainly meant to be rock royalty! With the crowd fully amped, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears came on stage and wasted no time getting down to business. Even though [...]

Rocking the main stage will be Billy Talent , Death From Above 1979 , Silversun Pickups , The Sheepdogs , Young The Giant , The Dirty Heads , USS and The Pack A.D. . This past year has been a whirlwind for The Sheepdogs - having just [...]
