"You gotta hear this song - it will change your life; I swear." At one point in your life, you've probably uttered these words or something very similar after hearing a song that totally rocked your world. Unfortunately for most of us, we don't have the opportunity to put together a movie soundtrack to share our favorite songs like Zach Braff got to with his movie Garden State . Written by and starring Zach Braff, Garden State is a movie about staring down your past and coming to terms with becoming a grown-up. The main [...]

The Shins stopped by the Like A Version studios to play a few songs off of the new Port Of Morrow album. While there they decided to perform a "tragic yet hilarious" rendition of The Magnetic Fields' " Andrew In Drag " that came out sounding nothing short of magnificent. It truly is just another case of one good band covering another that makes it near impossible to not enjoy the end result. [...]

A few weeks back, The Shins released Simple Song , a single from the band's upcoming album called Point of Morrow . Today, it's B-side track, September , has been released in a visual format. September is pretty much just an acoustic guitar song with lead singer James Mercer's vocals driving the song. Watch the video above to hear the song. The album is due out on March 20.

It's midnight on a Sunday night, and you are flipping through the channels. There seems to be nothing on T.V., but wait... is that Scrubs being syndicated. Yes it is, and you can't help but watch. After airing for what seemed an eternity, and even surviving switching networks, the first season of the popular show starring Zach Braff reminds viewers why we loved Scrubs . Maybe it was the bromance between J.D. and Turk, perhaps it was the evil janitor, or even the rants by Dr. Cox. At any rate, I couldn't imagine college without being spectacle [...]

This charming, woozy little daydream of a song, the title track from French singer Soko's debut album, is the musical equivalent of a tiny patch of blue sky on a cold, grey day. Haunted by birdsong and ethereal slide guitar, its combination of clever production and deceptively simple songwriting enable it to be both lush and lo-fi at the same time, which shouldn't really work but does. Soko's quirky croon and odd lyrics – 'You look at me as if I was a freak, but you said you like freaky people, so I thought you might like me a little [...]
I've come to realize that the amount of playlists I have on my iTunes has become so large that they are no longer helping me organize it, but making it more difficult to find my music. I have playlists for genres, events, ThisBonusTrack posts, exercise, studying, traveling and most of all I have random playlists that make no sense, just a group of songs that I've put together solely because they were what I felt like listening to at the time. I never know what to name them so they've all accumulated under iTunes default playlist name "untitled playlist 1, [...]

Ed Wall is a modern day gypsy, and I'm not talking in the pejorative French way but rather the good, bohemian way. It was an energy-filled night in Philadelphia in the First Unitarian Church's basement when the Morning Benders took the stage. It was obviously a highly anticipated show since it sold out, and with good reason. The venue was on the smaller side with a stage approximately 2-3 feet high, providing the night with [...]

So, cover songs? It's almost a taboo term in the music blogosphere. It almost goes without saying that everyone who makes a post about them has to start with 'I'm not usually a fan of covers but...". I don't see the big problem; I'm a massive fan of remixes and covers. I know the standard arguments: lack of personal originality, lazy musicianship etc., not to mention the horrible Pop Idol style covers you can hear on the radio all day. That being said, I think it's just as easy to criticise a horribly derivative artist under the same banners, just [...]
Transitioning from one season to the next as we leave summer behind and prepare for Autumn, can be a shitty experience. For me it is anyway since I love Spring and Summer, and only enjoy Autumn for about two weeks where it's cool and breezy and the sun hasn't started setting at 2pm yet. Winter can just fuck right off, but one thing I do like about Autumn and Winter is being cooped up inside where it's nice and warm when it's cold and dull and miserable outside. Part of the appeal of being trapped indoors is you [...]
The Dodos kicked off a month-long tour over the weekend with Ruby Suns in support of their third album, Time To Die . The San Francisco-based band starts in California, making the rounds across the U.S. and even sneaking in a quick Canadian date in Vancouver. So the title of the album is a bit of a downer, but they've gotten positive reviews from the likes of NPR and Pitchfork. Produced by Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, The Shins, Built to Spill), The Dodos promise that just because this record is more [...]
