Top 25 tracks of 2012 Well, it's December, it's a week until Christmas, it's midweek and I'm drinking. That can mean only one thing, I've read Trotter's Top 10 for this year and felt compelled to pen a response. Yes, it's time to pore over the musical detritus of 2012 and pick out the wheat from the chaff... Or, to let my inner geek put things into lists... Here, we look at the top 25 tracks from 2012 that do not feature on any of my top 10 albums of [...]

I'll be the first to admit that I have never gotten too excited for holiday music. Often times it just feels over-done, half-hearted, and tacky (Sorry, I ran out of hyphenated compound words to describe Christmas albums after two). There's only so many things you can change in "Jingle Bells" before it gets old. With that said, I think I have finally found a holiday compilation album that I can enjoy. The artist lineup is stellar, with the likes of Fun., The Shins, The Civil Wars, Punch Brothers, Head and the Heart, Andrew Bird , and many more. So [...]

A little more than midway through the second day (Saturday) of Austin City Limits, the unthinkable happened. Rufus Wainwright played the main stage. Just kidding! The flamboyant singer-songwriter's unique croon held up quite well on the monolithic platform. And he's actually pretty funny without trying to be. Here's the real story: just as Band of Skulls began its set, the sky opened up, emptying buckets of marble-sized raindrops upon the fest grounds. That brief, but torrential shower subsequently drowned guitarist Russell Marsden's equipment and caused the band to [...]

With their first Coachella 2012 performances a not-quite-distant memory, over the weekend some artists engaged in live collaborations to make for unique experiences in their second fest go-around. John Fogerty joined the Black Keys , Annie Clark of St. Vincent sang with Andrew Bird, and Thom Yorke came out during Modeselektor's set to perform "Shipwreck." The spine tingling magical moment of the weekend was during Radiohead at the end of "Karma Police" when the crowd continued to sing "I Lost Myself" after the band had stopped. Frank Yang If you were to ask me what I thought MOG did - and for the life of me I can't imagine why you would - the best I could offer is that they excel at getting my exhausted ass out of bed early on the Saturday of SXSW to go line up at The Mohawk so I can stand around for hours on end. They did it last year with a bill of Smith Westerns , Wild Flag , Okkervil River and TV On [...]

Finding out in the morning that you've won a ticket to see Bruce Springsteen in an intimate theatre show that night. Not bragging - okay, a little - just adding some context. And bragging. Yeah. Anyways, after doing my victory dance (don't pretend you don't have a victory dance) I did get out into the world to check out a day show at Jackalope run by fellow blogger Rawkblog that featured [...]
