New Music Tuesday: Portugal. The Man – Evil Friends

New Music Tuesday: Portugal. The Man – Evil Friends Another crazy year of great new music rocks on, and we're still only in May! This time we have new tunes from  Portugal. The Man for the first time in two years.  Evil Friends is the 8th full length album from the psychedelic rockers and it appears they have picked up right where they left off on 20112s  In the Mountain In the Cloud . The new music brings a lot of energy which can be partially attributed to the very familiar and well traveled producer,  Danger Mouse . After previously working most recently with names like  Beck ,  [...]

Ranking Rock Musicians’ Electronic Side Projects from Best to Worst

Gorillaz - Clint Eastwood
Things that we never expected to hear: Okkervil River's Will Sheff has an electronic side project... and it's actually quite good. Sheff released a song under the name Lovestreams earlier this week, and we've been rather enjoying it here at Flavorpill central, despite initial reservations about what in god's name it might sound like. The track makes Sheff the latest in a long-ish line of guitar-wielding types who've decided that they're rather like to twiddle knobs on the side, with wildly varying degrees of success. With that in mind, we thought we'd amuse ourselves looking at some such artists, ranking [...]

Back to Barking, Devendra Banhart.

Devendra Banhart - Für Hildegard von Bingen
Hip young folkster  Devendra Banhart has done some mutedly outlandish things in his time and whilst restitching some sequin glare into Taylor Dayne's Tell It To My Heart in order that it resemble a spangly psych-disco number was one of his more successful endeavours, dating porcelain bore Natalie Portman was arguably one of his lesser ventures. Lukewarm latest,  What Will We Be , could probably be charted somewhere or other ambiguous in between though a preliminary glimpse into its follow-up,  Mala , not only ups the calibre, but also the kookiness: Für Hildegard von Bingen is an ode [...]

The Shins – Port of Morrow album review

It has often been said that the best art raises questions rather than giving answers. If this was indeed the case for The Shins forthcoming album, Port of Morrow , rather than the unconvincing direction of front man James Mercer's recent musical aspirations, I would be tempted to jump on the bandwagon with my fellow aging old school Indy enthusiasts in praising this album as the relevant come back we all hoped for from one of the premier Indy-pop bands that stole our hearts. But much like that accidental fling with an ex-lover, the album left me outwardly satisfied [...]

Album Review: The Shins – Port Of Morrow

Album Review: The Shins – Port Of Morrow 5 years. That, my friends, is a long time to wait for a new offering from The Shins . A lot has happened in that time, though, unlike Pitchfork , I'm not going to bore you with a list... I think it's pretty clear that the latter part of the 20-oughts has been a turbulent time for everyone, and not only on the musical level. Though, it seems we are approaching the end of this crazy period, and perhaps (hopefully) the beginning of a calmer time. Maybe James Mercer will usher it in, maybe the Mayans [...]

ALBUM REVIEW: “Port of Morrow” by The Shins

The Shins hit a high note with Port of Morrow, an album teeming with promise of things to come.

The Shins, 'Port of Morrow': James Mercer Credits Danger Mouse for Album's Sound

Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases Sub Pop "It takes awhile before we can figure this thing out and turn it back around," is a telling line in the song 'It's Only Life' from 'Port of Morrow,' the Shins ' first album since 2007. For Shins' main man James Mercer "awhile" meant five years of side-projects like Broken Bells , amusing diversions like a [...]

Starry-Eyed; Of Little Surprise. The Shins, Port of Morrow.

Starry-Eyed; Of Little Surprise. The Shins, Port of Morrow. Prior to washing up here in the Port of Morrow, The Shins' fourth studio full-length and first to be named after Boardman, Oregon's port authority frontman James Mercer found himself at the forefront of many a musical endeavour. From catching the imagination tail of Danger Mouse and ringing them Broken Bells , to teaming up with Isaac Brock of nominally, similarly murine fame to soundtrack Chris Malloy's 180º South and furthermore engraving himself into the silver screen itself in Matt McCormick's Some Days Are Better Than Others, it remains rather safe to say that Mercer's been slacking [...]
