After 2007’s Wincing the Night Away , the Grammy-nominated album that established The Shins as the latest indie darlings to crash the mainstream, the band seemed destined for even bigger things. But James Mercer had other plans, teaming up with Danger Mouse to release an album and an EP as Broken Bells, which seemed more than a side-project vamp at the time. And that’s why it’s such a delight to hear “Simple Song,” the band’s first single off the forthcoming LP Port of Morrow . It finds James Mercer embracing once more the bright, [...]

Broken Bells - Heartless Empire
Our buddy over at Twentyfourbit came across this delightful gem. Last month at a benefit for Portland, OR's Puddletown School, James Mercer along with Modest Mouse's Joe Plummer on drums played a new Shins track during their encore. Just before the song, Mercer told the audience,"We're working on a new record and this is one of the songs that should be on there." Sounds pretty catchy! I'm all for it! Wonder what else they have up their sleeves? Guess we'll have to wait and find out! Check out the video above for [...]

Broken Bells Broken Bells Released March 9, 2010 (Columbia) Short Notes: Danger Mouse and James Mercer (of the Shins) make a record that’s not bad, but not the sum of its parts, either. Brandon: C+ This record has gotten a lot of heat in the mainstream press, but the indie media that’s been the meat and potatoes for both Danger Mouse and the Shins has been awfully silent on this record. That’s because its not as good [...]
For the second consecutive year at Hidden Track, we concocted our innovative little experiment for the year-end Best Albums list. Instead of picking the old fashioned way – subjectively – we opted for something a little different: a collaborative, collective list that incorporates the opinions of everybody here at HT. To begin, we devised an all-encompassing list of well over 100 nominees, whereby most everything our contributors recommended made the list. Then we invited our crew of writers to independently and blindly vote on the whole list on [...]
THE SHINSHello, my name is Joe and I have an addiction. For the past few months, you might say I have been binge listening to this band. The only real problem with my recent infatuation with The Shins is the fact that they have been on hiatus since 2007. James Mercer and company decided to take some time off after the release of Wincing the Night Away which was extremely successful, reaching

The Broken Bells have just released a second video for their latest single "Ghost Inside". Instead of featuring band members Danger Mouse and Shins frontman James Mercer, the group decided to turn to a certain 80's pop duo to star in the video. The band took the splendor that is the Hall and Oates "Private Eyes" video and simply lip synced their lyrics, swapping out mouths along the way. You gotta love technology.....

My anticipation for Magenta Skycode's second album, Relief, has been building for years now. The Finnish group was one of the first featured artists in the history of this site, and in my first "Top Albums of the Year" feature I lauded it as being the best debut from that year, 2006. There were few [...]
