Gallery: Kurt Vile & the Violators, The Fresh & Onlys, and Steve Gunn at The Echoplex

Gallery: Kurt Vile & the Violators, The Fresh & Onlys, and Steve Gunn at The Echoplex Kurt Vile took the stage Tuesday night at the jam-packed Echoplex looking as if he just walked out of his "Never Run Away" video — maybe his all-white persona is here to stay. As he did at Coachella , Vile delivered his songs from beneath his voluminous hair, keeping it low-key and letting the music, rather than the guitarist himself, connect with the audience. His backing band the Violators ebbed on and off the stage throughout the night, giving Vile a chance to also show off some of his acoustic versions of his hits. When left [...]

[SHOW REVIEW] Youngblood Hawke with guests The Colourist and Future Feats at The Triple Rock Social Club

[SHOW REVIEW] Youngblood Hawke with guests The Colourist and Future Feats at The Triple Rock Social Club Often times I find myself skipping over the opening acts when I write a show review.  This time, there's no skipping over the opening performances that Future Feats and The Colourist put on Monday at The Triple Rock. In my opinion, opening acts have one job to do: get the audience pumped and ready to see the headliner.  Chicago natives, Future Feats, did just that.  Every shred of energy in the lead singer's  body was left on the stage.  Midway through the second song, I [...]

Jos. Fortin & Her Harbour @ Raw Sugar Cafe [May 8, 2013]

Jos. Fortin & Her Harbour @ Raw Sugar Cafe [May 8, 2013] Went to a nice intimate show at the Raw Sugar Cafe on May 8th. It was a last minute decision but I wanted to come and support these musicians. Playing at the show: • Jos. Fortin • Her Harbour It wasn't a few weeks ago that I went to Her Harbour's CD Release show. This time it was more of a strip down set which it [...]

Review & Photos: UV Race @ 1-2-3-4 Go! Records, 5/6/13

Review & Photos: UV Race @ 1-2-3-4 Go! Records, 5/6/13 Melbourne's UV Race passed through town this week, playing the Rickshaw on Sunday and 1-2-3-4 Go! on Monday. It's their first US tour since 2010 and it's a doozy of a tour. Portland with the great Eat Skull, the East Coast and on to Chaos in Tejas (May 30-Jun 2) with The Damned and The Bats. At some point, the band will morph into side project Total Control . Incredibly, the tour terminates at the Uptown in Oakland on June 9th. [...]

Review & Photos: Dead Meadow, Dead Skeletons @ Brick & Mortar Music Hall, 5/4/13

Review & Photos: Dead Meadow, Dead Skeletons @ Brick & Mortar Music Hall, 5/4/13 May 4th, 1am, I found myself in front of a chaotic Dead Skeletons  at the Brick & Mortar Music Hall, hypnotized with the rest of the audience by some sort of ritualistic frenzy. What a great weekend for psychedelia in the Bay! The Washington D.C.-based Dead Meadow led a miniature psych-fest that featured a slew of similarly stoney bands (Dead Skeletons, LSD and the Search for God , Mr. Elevator & the Brain Hotel , Old Testament , and more), scattered across three days and [...]

Show Review: Little Boots with Avan Lava and Feathers at Rickshaw Stop, 5/3/2013

On a special Friday Popscene that went far into the night, all the way into the headliner's birthday, the crowd was treated to synth pop in different forms - the dark tinged variety, the choreographed kind, and finally the made-for-the-charts sugary pop of Victoria Hesketh, aka Little Boots. It was a fun night, although not [...] The post Show Review: Little Boots with Avan Lava and Feathers at Rickshaw Stop, 5/3/2013 appeared first on Spinning Platters .

Purity Ring w/ Blue Hawaii @ The Danforth Music Hall 5/5/2013

Purity Ring w/ Blue Hawaii @ The Danforth Music Hall 5/5/2013 by Tiana Feng Last night Purity Ring and Blue Hawaii took over the Danforth Music Hall for a night of electropop. The show was all ages and there were many youngsters who had no idea who Blue Hawaii was. I had seen them not too long ago and the duo played a much more confident set than last time. Blue Hawaii remixed Untogether in order to translate [...]

Show Review: Bleached, Ex Cops, Dirty Pillows and Spirit on the Water at the Blank Club, 5/4/2013

Bleached blew the doors off at the Blank Club, and luckily they weren't DeLorean doors, because then people would have gotten decked for real, rather than that fake decking Floyd Mayweather gave Robert Guerrero earlier that evening. There's more sports highlights herein. Buckle up. (It's times like this I'm glad Spinning Platters has an editor. Show Review: Maps and Atlases, Young Man, Cannons and Clouds at Rickshaw Stop, 4/26/2013

Everybody socialized with the reserved excitement of a freshman orientation. Fun was to be had, sure, but to what degree was the procession supposed to fall backwards in trust. Nobody had an answer in Rickshaw Stop, San Francisco's nook of clamoring dynamite, for what to expect from Maps & Atlases and company. Neither the crowd's [...] The post Show Review: Maps and Atlases, Young Man, Cannons and Clouds at Rickshaw Stop, 4/26/2013 appeared first on Spinning Platters .

Fire and Neon, The Love Machine & Zoo Legacy @ Ritual [May 3, 2013]

Fire and Neon, The Love Machine & Zoo Legacy @ Ritual [May 3, 2013] May is definitely getting busy and hot with various events happening in Ottawa. Decided to hit up Ritual for a Ottawa band's album release. Playing at the show: • Fire and Neon • The Love Machine • Zoo Legacy DJ JFun (Jordan of the Love Machine) was the DJ of the music. Playing mix [...]

Review: Clinic, No Joy @ Rickshaw Stop, 5/3/13

Review: Clinic, No Joy @ Rickshaw Stop, 5/3/13 Clinic have been around for a long time. Their debut album, Internal Wrangler , came out when I was just starting high school and I still remember my best friend Josh hyping them as a less bombastic, mellower version of our then favorite UK rock group, Radiohead. Skip forward some 13 years later and last night was my first opportunity to see Clinic live — albeit without Josh, who was forced to work late in Sacramento (adulthood? fuck) — at the Rickshaw Stop. Canadian show openers No Joy lived up to their [...]

Review & Photos: Stereo Total, Giggle Party and Super Adventure Club, Rickshaw Stop, 5/1/13

Review & Photos: Stereo Total, Giggle Party and Super Adventure Club, Rickshaw Stop, 5/1/13 Stereo Total formed more than 20 years ago. They sing in French and German. They mix Casiotone pop, disco and garage rock as if it were completely natural to do so. They played "Pixelize Me" from the new album Cactus versus Brezel , but also oldies like "Miau Miau" from the 1995 self-titled LP. The set closed with an excellent spin on Sid Vicious's "My Way" sung in French. The encores ended with "Everyone in the Discotheque (I Hate)" and everyone on stage singing in the rain. [...]

Beach Fossils at The Subterranean

Beach Fossils at The Subterranean It's really something when you get the chance to see a band live and it throws you through a loop. Before tonight, had someone told me that fans would be moshing and diving off the stage at a Beach Fossils show, I would have been in utter disbelief. The band played at The Subterranean in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago with the groups Ivy Dye and Twin Peaks opening up for them. It was clear to see how the first band, [...]

Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 5/2/13-5/8/13

Kurt Vile - "Never Run Away" with intro from Kurt
May is looking almost as crazy as April on the show front. And this time there isn't a Coachella to blame it on. You just need to blame it on how awesome the bay area is! Now, got do some rocking. Or Else... Thursday, May 2nd Clinic, No Joy at Rickshaw Stop Clinic, along with [...] The post Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 5/2/13-5/8/13 appeared first on Spinning Platters .

Review & Photos: Metz, White Lung, Mrs. Magician @ Bottom of the Hill, 4/30/13

Review & Photos: Metz, White Lung, Mrs. Magician @ Bottom of the Hill, 4/30/13 By the start of Tuesday night's show at Bottom of the Hill, the turnout was a little concerning. With a bill headlined by Metz (one of Sub Pop's newer novelty punk bands) and their Canadian tour mates White Lung , you'd think it would have a heavy attendance. But at 9:15, when San Diego surf pop openers Mrs. Magician started their set, the room was maybe a quarter of the way full. By White Lung, it was packed, and rightfully so, for a [...]

Show Review: Marnie Stern with SISU and E V Kain at the Rickshaw Stop, 4/28/2013

Incendiary guitar goddess Marnie Stern returned to San Francisco last night in support of her fourth and most accessible LP, the wondrously titled The Chronicles of Marnia. The show, which transpired at the Rickshaw Stop, drew a full house of giddily enthusiastic fans, or at least what passes for "giddily enthusiastic" on a Sunday night [...] The post Show Review: Marnie Stern with SISU and E V Kain at the Rickshaw Stop, 4/28/2013 appeared first on Spinning Platters .

Fauxchella Review: Bat For Lashes at The Regency Ballroom, 4/14/13

Oh Fauxchella, how I do I count the ways.  While most of the world waits diligently to attend something overly populated with clutter, annoyance, and unwelcoming weather, the locally abounding intellects know you will be there for us.  Engrossed entirely inside night four of eight, you gave me Bat For Lashes.  While there were about [...] The post Fauxchella Review: Bat For Lashes at The Regency Ballroom, 4/14/13 appeared first on Spinning Platters .
