The Cabin in the Woods ended up being a test for me on several levels. I was unable to catch the theatrical release of the film. This normally would not have been an issue if it were not for the “go in knowing as little as possible” buzz the film generated. The problem with this though is that avoiding spoilers has become increasingly difficult in an age of twitter, blogs, Youtube, and podcasts. Miraculously, I managed to go through the better part of the year only knowing that Joss Whedon was involved, and that several people [...]
In the dramatic thriller Red Lights, Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver star as the world's foremost investigators of paranormal phenomena. Professional skeptics, they have debunked dozens of fraudulent mind readers, ghost hunters, and faith healers by detecting "red lights", subtle clues to the trickery behind each of these "supernatural" occurrences. But when a world-renowned psychic [...]

With summer nearly halfway over (though it's always summer here in Bangkok), we're closing in on my favorite time of year: Oscar season, those autumn months when Hollywood puts away its summer toys and begins to regularly treat us to films about adults, starring adults, made for adults. And once again, we get to fill our heads with wishful thinking: Which long overdue star will finally get some Oscar love. In 2012, it was Christopher Plummer. In 2010, Jeff Bridges. But what about the ladies? Kate Winslet, who finally struck gold [...]
Director: Rodrigo Cortés Cast: Sigourney Weaver, Cillian Murphy, Robert De Niro, Toby Jones Certificate: 15 Running Time: 113 mins Release Date: June 15th The English film director Nicolas Roeg once remarked that he would like to have the words 'abandon all preconceptions ye who enter here' written in front of all cinemas. It is a sentiment presumably shared by Spanish fimmaker Rodrigo Cortés ( Buried ) who urged his audience to "expect nothing" when Red Lights [...]

Director : Oren Moverman Cast : Woody Harrelson, Ice Cube, Anne Heche, Sigourney Weaver, Ben Foster, Ned Beatty, Cynthia Nixon, Robin Wright and Steve Buscemi Certificate : 16 Running Time : 108 minutes Fans of Notorious BIG may already be familiar with Rampart cops. Those who've seen Nick Broomfield's Biggie And Tupac will know all about them. The alleged involvement of three L.A. police officers - at the time working night-time security for Death Row Records owner Suge Knight - in the shooting of Biggie was a smaller incident [...]

It probably wasn't my smartest move ever. The year was 1990, and I was having lunch with a group of friends at Cafe Garden across the street from the University of Florida campus in Gainesville. It was one of those lazy Saturday afternoons when your expectations are low. But isn't that always when the unexpected happens? After we ordered, who should walk through the door but Woody Harrelson, then best known as the Emmy-winning star of the popular sitcom Cheers . I was a UF senior, and less than a year away from [...]

For the record, I don't like guns. Along with money and lust (for power, for sex, for, well, money), they're the root of all evil. But there was a period when I briefly considered buying one. It was right after I was attacked and robbed in my apartment in Buenos Aires. Since the police didn't seem particularly eager to do anything about it, a bit of a vigilante streak crept in. It didn't last long, though. Eventually, I realized that even if I'd owned a gun, since the intruders entered my apartment while I was out, they [...]

This past Thursday night, the Toronto Underground theatre held another instalment of its wonderful Defending the Indefensible series. The premise of the series is simple, two individuals, be it critics, bloggers, or a combination of the two, get in front of an audience and debate why they either love or hate a particular film. The film is then screened for the audience. Afterwards the audience can ask questions to the participants based on what they just saw. The best part is that all the proceeds go to charity. This week's edition featured [...]
Rise of the Planet of the Apes Although I was secretly hoping for something more along the lines of the The Simpsons ’ Planet of the Apes musical , I must admit that I am really looking forward to this film. Abduction This film feels like a cross between Hanna and Enemy of the State . Taylor Lautner will have an uphill battle convincing people that he is a viable action star. Still, the strong [...]

Taylor Lautner 's first starring role after the Twilight films is Abduction , about a young man who discovers that his face is on a missing person's database and goes on a mission to discover who he really is. Add in a bunch of assassins trying to take him out, Sigourney Weaver , Jason Isaacs and Maria Bello , and you have yourself the makings of a decent looking action film... or do you? [...]

Ice Age Continental Drift How many of these are they going to make? Cedar Rapids I worked in the insurance sector several years ago and things never got this wild. Clearly I was working for the wrong company.

Have you seen Snow Cake ? It's a 2006 film starring Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver. Weaver plays an autistic woman who loses her daughter in a car accident after she accepts a ride with Alan Rickman's character, Alex. Alex goes to apologise to her for his part in the accident and ends up staying a lot longer than he planned. I really liked this movie. Not only does Weaver do a truly magnificent (and often quite amusing) job of portraying Linda, but Rickman is equally as powerful, playing the sad and lonely Alex, a man on [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News British dance pop duo the Ting Tings appeared on 'SNL' Jan. 16, bringing their hits 'Shut Up And Let Me Go' and 'That's Not My Name' to an ' Avatar '-filled evening of comedy hosted by Sigourney Weaver . Singer Katie White made a costume change for her rendition of the band's two big hits, wearing black and white spiderweb-like ensembles that wouldn't be out of place in Lady Gaga or Fever Ray 's closets. The [...]

Avatar In a future were Earth’s natural resources are scarce, humans must acquire resources from other planets. One planet in particular, Pandora, is has a wealth of resources that Parker Selfridge (Giovanni Ribisi) and his shareholders hope to make a hefty profit on. The problem is that Pandora is inhabited by the Na’vi, giant blue creatures that have a unique link to the planet. The humans eventually find a way to make their own Na’vi clones (known as Avatars) that are piloted by human brains. Jake Sully [...]
