With horns blaring, "Dirty Summer," the new song by Austin's Mother Falcon , starts off big. For nearly three and a half minutes, it never really settles down. Their huge sound can largely be attributed to the fact that they began as an after-school jam among a handful of high school orchestra students looking for a more creative outlet than reading sheet music. With anywhere from 15 to 20 people in the band, it's no surprise that they have meshed a variety of influences - their sound is what you might expect if Sufjan Stevens , [...]

Don’t let their name fool you - Berlinist is not one person from Berlin, but rather seven people from Barcelona. Landscapes is the band's first EP, a two-track seven-inch that came out earlier in January. According to their Facebook, Berlinist’s music is “based on emotions and communicating them by means of natural and true instruments that reach the listeners.” Twinkly, swirling and romantic with atmospheric, ethereal vocals over swelling and omnipresent piano, their music sounds like the soundtrack to a movie you would really want to [...]

photo by Rolling Stone Mick Jagger closed out his hosting duties for last Saturday's season finale of SNL by performing a medley of Rolling Stones songs with Arcade Fire , The Strokes , and Foo Fighters as his backing bands. Somewhere out in musicland, the kitchen sink feels left out. Videos of that performance can be found here . Radiohead's Kid A and OK Computer remade 8-bit style?!? Wow. I might just [...]

It was a cold and rainy day but didn't stop people for Record Store Day 2012. Surprised by the turnout when I got to Vertigo Records at 8:30am. There was already people in line, I was around the 20th person. Last year I was one of five people who got there at around that time. I guess the buzz and hype surrounding Record Store Day is a good thing for the indie record shops. I totally zoom by this year's event. Here is a list of what I bought. [...]

Earlier in our coverage of Record Store Day 2012, KEXP has covered both the full list of record exclusives and live events around Seattle ; however, amidst the many, many special releases available this weekend, we've highlighted the vinyl releases that we're super excited about. Arcade Fire - "Sprawl II" (Mountains Beyond Mountains) Courtesy of Merge Records. Remixes of The Suburbs tracks "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) and "Ready to Start" by producer Damian Taylor with Arcade Fire. [...]

It’s happening again this year! Record Store Day 2012!! This will be my third year trying to get whatever “limited edition” records around. Like previous years I made a list of what records I wanted to get and what I bought . I understand some of the release will be available only in the UK and USA. The Ottawa music stores that are participating are: Compact Music CD Warehouse Birdman Sound [...]

In retrospect, with a name alluding to the famous novella written by one of my favorite authors (John Steinbeck), it was inevitable that I would explore the music of the band Of Monsters and Men. This six-piece indie/folk band is just the latest Icelandic group to emerge from the small, remote island that seemingly produces more internationally-acclaimed musicians than it should, joining the likes of Sigur Rós, Björk, Emiliana Torrini and the last artist I interviewed, Ólöf Arnalds. In 2010, Of Monsters and Men broke onto the Icelandic music scene when they won the nation-wide battle [...]

![[Introducing] – MF/MB/](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3351353_lg.jpg)
When thinking of bands from Scandinavia your list would probably start with Abba, then move on to other mainstream ones like Roxette, Ace of Base and The Cardigans. You might also have a complete list of all the Death Metal bands to hail from there. Alternatively you may well be heading into my particular taste area with such great bands as Hanoi Rocks, Sugarcubes (and my favourite elfin chanteuse Björk ) and Sigur Rós . If that's the case I've got another one for you. This band goes by the decidedly odd name of [...]

February 26, 2011 Sometimes a gig is more than just a band standing on a stage playing songs to a room full of people who like their records. Very occasionally, there are instances where band, venue and crowd come together in a beautiful and poetic unison and it’s suddenly about more than mere music, it’s about an experience in the fullest sense of the word. Tonight, (unexpectedly to me, I must concede), Efterklang provide one of those magical gigs. [...]
J. Edward Keyes, Editor-in-Chief for eMusic, told WNYC: "In 2011, expect the line between independent music and big-name, arena-filling acts to become increasingly blurred.” That sounds about right. (Top Three Places We Saw Phoenix With Like 100,000 Other People) But the mainstream-ization of indie rock has played out since before Zoo Kid was born: "Alternative [...]

Click image to download full album Sounds like: Vampire Weekend, Animal Collective, Sigur Ros, Arcade Fire "Jinja Safari - Peter Pan" What's so good? Jinja Safari are beings of the earth. Meeting at a beachside campfire in early 2010, from completely opposite ends of Australia, this talented duo is entertaining multitudes with their self-titled EP. Jinja Safari have come a long way in a short period of time. They only played their first shows during May [...]

Oh boy. We're in for trouble. The greatest albums...of all time? Are they nuts? Where do they get the nerve? Wait 'til they hear my piece of mind! All thoughts racing through your temples right now. (That is, if you're even taking the time to read this.) But, think about it: You love these lists. We do, too. But more on that in a second. For now, try and imagine the culture we live in. The idea of learning about someone through conversation, or even something as rudimentary as spending time together, is so "old-fashioned" and so "passe." Nope. Anything [...]
