The top mp3s have gone through many incarnations since the beginning of Consequence of Sound in 2007. What used to be an exhaustive roundup of all the singles, remixes, covers, and undiscovered gems emailed to us any given week evolved into a compilation whittled down to our 10 favorite new songs. For 2013, we’re again changing up the format with the hope of giving our selections some added weight. We’re still posting about our 10 favorite songs, but they’ll be ordered in quality from 10-1. Who takes home #1 this week? You’ll have to click ‘Next’ to find [...]

Before Grammy nominations and blockbuster soundtracks, M83 proved to the world that shoegaze and electronica could thrive in the same space. The then-duo feasted on a history of computer music, striving to create life with airless tools. By aspiring to post-rock heights with dusty samples and laymen's synths, Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau broke a longstanding mold of restrained, austere electronic music. Under their hands, synths could swell and scream like forces of nature. Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts started M83 on the track to global recognition, and still stands as one of [...]

B3SCI has teamed up with the good peeps at Danger Village to drop this exclusive mix of their choice Spring 2013 worthy jams. Owner Beth Martinez curates the mix track by track below. Hibernation doesn't stand a chance. 1) holychild “Best Friends” This song sets the tone perfectly for what I want to come across in this mix. For spring we’re looking to brighter, organic sounds threaded through with good feelings of friendship and laughter. Shifting away from the electronic-heavy vibes of the last mix, this song [...]
After dropping some hints in January that their upcoming record would be "more aggressive" then touting some (indeed, pretty aggressive) new tracks on tour around Europe, Sigur Rós have confirmed some details about the album, which is titled Kveikur . We've already heard t he title track alongside "Yfirboro" and "Hrafntinna" thanks to some fan-recorded concert videos, and the band have just released a super-creepy video for a super-heavy new song called "Brennisteinn" that you can check out now, so it looks like we've sampled just under half the tracks from Kveikur [...]

2012...what a year of music. We got new releases from favorites such as Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear and heard new favorites in Father John Misty, Nude Beach, Tanlines, and more. Last year Earbuddy celebrated one year of existence with the best 50 albums of 2011 . However, we've grown since [...]
It's that time at last! Triple J Hottest 100 voting has opened. For those that don't let their musical intelligence be insulted by Triple J, this year promises to be another hard slog at getting those 10 tracks perfectly right, so that you can just tick them off as they come up one by one on the 26th January. Well... at least that's what it used to be like. It's been only 10 years ago now, that Queens of the Stone Age held the number 1 spot with their mental track "No One Knows", and only five years [...]

“A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.” -Willy Wonka Bon Iver – “Beth/Rest” As Jeremy Larson said earlier this week, "This is where Mike Teevee went when he died." Death Grips – “True Vulture” Nothing tops this video this week. Galen Pehrson of LA’s Museum of Contemporary Art assists in animating what's arguably one of the most destructive forces in music today. The result, however, is quite the opposite. El-P – “Stay Down” [...]

“A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.” -Willy Wonka ...Trail of Dead – “Catatonic” Vote Rich Dobney. Or, don't. Angel Haze – “Werkin’ Girls” Where did she get that Freddy Krueger claw-glove of hers? Must have! Cloud Nothings – “Fall In” Hey, just because they're loud-mouthed garage rockers doesn't mean they can't do a black and white dance number every so often. Death Grips - "World of Dogs" [...]

“A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.” -Willy Wonka Charli XCX – “So Far Away” This is what happens when young avant garde filmmakers can't shake off their Disney itch. Crystal Castles – “Plague” I'm pretty sure Andrzej Zulawski's 1981 French film, The Possession , is scary. But, it's so much more unnerving when Alice Glass is screaming over it. Dum Dum Girls – “Lord Knows” Witches, dude. Grizzly Bear [...]
Although belated this review is a necessity. If you're in Berlin in September, Berlin Music Week is a must. Describing the city of Berlin isn't a hard task if you're here for a week of music. They live and breathe partying and when they have their biggest music week in town they definitely don't leave any stone unturned. To say we were excited is an understatement. Leaving Outlook Festival in Pula, and traveling north 1200km en route to Berlin was not a minute task, as we had to travel across 5 countries, the majority in German, [...]

“A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.” -Willy Wonka Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy – “Time to Be Clear” The most depressing Looney Tunes cartoon you'll ever watch - even over the likes of Space Jam . Dirty Projectors - "Hi Custodian" Do you love this band? Are you a fan of neon green? Can you stand to lose 20 minutes? Are you watching it already? Should I shut up already? Okay. Green Day - "Nuclear Family" [...]

By Sam Cleeve Bestival 2012 takes place 6th-9th September at Robin Hill Country Park, Isle of Wight ( website / tickets ). Lead photo (left) by Louise Roberts . Next month sees the eagerly awaited return of Rob Da Bank's annual shebang—the ninth instalment of his four-day festival, nestled away on the UK's favourite holiday-making annex, the Isle of Wight. Across the water, festival-goers will be privy to one of the summer's most thoughtful and eclectic line-ups. Exclusive live performances and an unparalleled selection of DJ sets [...]

“A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.” -Willy Wonka Azealia Banks – “Van Vogue” When you're a beautiful woman, it really only takes some running water and choice close-ups to make an entertaining video. Now somebody get Azealia a towel. Darlingside – “Terrible Things” This video from Northampton, MA natives Darlingside plays like a depressing, self-loathing version of the film Memento . Our protagonist is constantly reminded of all the bad things he's ever [...]
Who would've ever thought we'd see Geographer, Norah Jones, and Metallica share stage space at a festival. But we did, and the experience was truly unique.
In all my years as a festie, I've never been to a festival where gloves seemed like a perfectly sound idea. But San Francisco defies the logic of California (as comedian Marcus Monroe put it, "It's summer, so tell your fucking city that"), with cool days and downright cold evenings. Still, the City by the Bay plays one hell of a host. Coming from Boston, the honest politeness of the people here was shockingly apparent from the moment I stepped onto the BART. With sunny skies above, it was a warm welcome to the weekend ahead. Of course, [...]

And that's a wrap! Lollapalooza 2012... 1:30 p.m.: Polica Photo by Richard Giraldi When Polica (that's Poe-Lisa) kicked off their early afternoon set, their shadowy dance vibes filled with dub beat seemed more fitting for a damp, dark club at two in the morning than a glorious Chicago summer day. But the band didn't seem to mind bathing in the slight warm sun and really got the early fest goers moving with their crawling, mud-thick basslines [...]
