The band's 7th LP, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, translates to, “With a buzz in our ears we play endlessly.” That's both true and not true because, yes, Sigur Rós songs can be very long by some standards, but the band lives for the ending. Each note that happens in the first minute of the song is in service of the very last minute of the son. That's what Sigur Rós do best. They can't wait to build to that climax and then release, no matter how long they keep you waiting. These linear songs throughout their [...]

In all my years as a festie, I've never been to a festival where gloves seemed like a perfectly sound idea. But San Francisco defies the logic of California (as comedian Marcus Monroe put it, "It's summer, so tell your fucking city that"), with cool days and downright cold evenings. Still, the City by the Bay plays one hell of a host. Coming from Boston, the honest politeness of the people here was shockingly apparent from the moment I stepped onto the BART. With sunny skies above, it was a warm welcome to the weekend ahead. Of course, [...]

For the eighth time in a row, Lollapalooza returned to Chicago's Grant Park. While the festival has received its share of rain over the years (e.g. Billy Idol's mesmerizing sun shower set in 2005, The Gaslight Anthem's downpour debut in 2009, Best Coast's muddy power hour in 2011, to name a few), the grounds have never had to shut down . Yet with recent catastrophes at festivals worldwide, management took no chances and they made the right choice. Only three hours were ultimately lost and in those three hours something wild happened - there was a sense [...]

Ever since I first heard Valtari , I wondered how its minimalist malaise would translate to the typically dynamic and powerful live Sigur Rós experience. Songs such as "Varúð", which follow the archetypal Sigur Rós structure (mellow start-powerful build-glorious release) would surely do fine. Yet how would the band approach one of my favorite Valtari tracks, "Varðeldur", which inches forward slowly, building on the same repetitive idea and gradually intensifying to a plateau rather than a breakthrough? The question remains unanswered, at least through the first three shows of Sigur [...]

Let's face it, it's an impossible task for any concert film made in the 21st century to live up to the golden standard set by The Last Waltz and Stop Making Sense decades ago. If you read any best-of list for concert films, one of those two is bound to be in the top spot. They're both so ingrained as all-time classics that they'll be topping lists 50 years from now. However, recent years have provided music lovers plenty of reasons to keep watching, and with the premiere of LCD Soundsystem's highly anticipated Shut [...]
“Valtari” is the Icelandic word for “steamroller”. That’s an apt description for much of the music from Sigur Rós , exemplified by the epic “Untitled 8” (aka “Popplagið”) from 2001’s ( ) . It's a steamroller of sound, bowling you over with its emphatic build towards oblivion, exploding in a minor key catharsis. But Valtari , Sigur Rós’ seventh studio album, is not that kind of steamroller. Here’s a better metaphor: a large, clunking machine, moving incredibly slowly over pavement. The immense circular wheels spin with unbelievable sloth, but they spin nonetheless, rotating [...]

Consequence of Sound' s Summer Tour Guide will lead you to the darkest, dankest (not every venue has a ventilation system, folks) concerts where you can dance the night away after spending too many hours in the sun. From Dirty Projectors to Phish to the Diplo/Grimes/Skrillex extravaganza that is the Full Flex Express, we've listed the best and brightest artists that are touring new or as-of-yet unreleased albums , touring around festival appearances, or just touring because it's damn fun. -Harley Brown Associate Editor Feature artwork [...]

Welcome to Dissected, where we disassemble a band’s catalog in the abstract. It’s exact science by way of a few beers. - More than any other band, Sigur Rós provides the best soundtrack for my life and while a lot of it is incidental (Sigur Rós is de rigueur on any Sleepy Time mix), there have been many times times where I have laid still and let those waves of bowed guitars, tympanic vibrations, weeping violins, and Jonsí's choirboy voice overtake my consciousness. Their music adds a significant gravity to your life, narcotically turning the [...]

As promised , Sigur Rós will return this spring with their sixth studio album. According to this month's Q Magazine (via the band's message board ), the LP is called Valtari and will arrive in the UK on May 28th (and presumably the following day in the U.S.) Produced by frontman Jónsi, along with his partner and frequent collaborator Alex Somers, the album includes at least seven tracks, which you can find listed out below. In a previous interview , the band used adjectives like "ambient," "introverted," "floaty," and [...]

When you compile a list like this, you start to tremble at how much you're really going to absorb in the ensuing months. This doesn't even cover the misses and surprises. If you're a casual listener, you might get through an album a day. Okay, maybe two. If you're a fanatic, you're spinning discographies left and right. Still, after 365 days, either person is buzzing. One's just a little louder with the phonetics. As I wrote back in December, in a year, you'll have your next roundup of favorite albums. You'll have a new favorite song. You might [...]

Regardless of your spiritual allegiance or thoughts regarding freezing temperatures, the winter/holiday season is an interesting one. There's something about this period of the calendar year that just feels different from everything else. Summer has the vibe and energy of hot, sticky freedom; spring lives and breathes with the promise of a reawakening; and fall is all about getting in line and preparation. Winter, though, is slightly more splintered. Some people see Christmas/Hanukkah/the Winter Solstice/Festivus as a time for family and friends and celebrating the inherent warmth and goodness in us all. Others view these as tired traditions, [...]

Truthfully and solipsistically, I wish you cared about me and the rest of the writers at Consequence of Sound so much that you'd want to hear our most personal thoughts on music, because you'd make our jobs way easier. I wish that I could just tell you that the new Atlas Sound album was "awesome, man. So good!" and that Lulu was "just sad, you know?" It's what I tell my friends, and it's probably what you tell your friends, too, and it's the absolute pith and genesis of every word written on music - that first impulse you say [...]

It’s amazing to see how many videos can come out in a week. Back in the day, MTV used to premiere one video at a time and each time it was a big deal . Sometimes entire hours of programming were centered around the premieres of videos. Nowadays, millions of music videos go live every single day, and it can be easy to miss some of the coolest ones. Luckily, you have Cluster 1 dishing out the goods, and keeping you in check with the best music videos of the week. And don’t forget, we [...]
