Yes, the obituary for Simpsons' creator Matt Groening's mother reads like something The Onion would conjure up. Here's another interesting bit of Simpsons news : Icelandic band Sigur Rós is not just going to be a guest on the upcoming May 19th episode, but they are also going to score the episode with original music and record a version of the show's iconic opening number. in the episode, entitled “the saga of carl,” homer, moe, lenny, and carl team up to buy a [...]
Icelandic superstars SIGUR RÓS premiere another new song from their upcoming studioalbum Kveikur in the form of Ísjaki. Classical and compositional music is usually incapable of receiving the same kind of critique as popular music. There is more to contend with as far as the compositional strength, originality, and technique of a piece are concerned whereas an indie album is more often judged on its sound, its immediacy, and its idiosyncrasies. That Olafur Arnalds is treated less like a composer and more like an indie songwriter is probably more the result of his presence and approach to music and less the music itself. So it might be unfair to hold For Now I Am Winter accountable [...]

I didn't shoot the show but it was amazing to experience their music!! I wasn't expecting on going to this concert on March 29th. But thanks to a friend who had connections, I got to see Sigur Rós play at Ottawa's Scotiabank Place . The last time the band played in Ottawa was 2005 at Bronson Centre. That was a show you couldn't miss back then. Now jump ahead to 2013 with six albums under their belt and a seventh album going to drop on June 13th. The [...]

Iceland have been pumping out some pretty great acts recently. OF MONSTERS AND MEN raced to the top of this year's Triple J Hottest 100 , and BJORK, well its bloody BJORK ! But one of Iceland’s best exports is the always ethereal, SIGUR ROS . If you’ve ever layed in a hammock at sunset, or walked through a field of snow on a winter’s morning, you’ll know what SIGUR ROS feel like. They feel more like a state of mind than just a mood. You [...]

The idea of starting a band actually came up when we were at a rock concert and I whispered to our previous bass player: Oh it would be so cool if we’d be in a band. And she agreed, so we decided to do something about it! Make it a word and a blow. Icelandic songstress Sóley recently visited the 9:30 Club while on tour with Of Monsters and Men. Like many musicians in Iceland, she splits her time among a number of bands/projects, but of late has come to prefer the process of working solo, where she maintains all of the creative control. Now off of her tour, she's back to work recording a new album. But watch the clip above as she performs "Sun is Going Down," "Smashed Birds" and brand new song "Wedding."

Pascal Pinon is comprised of Icelandic twin sisters Jófrídur and Ásthildu. The pair just released "Þerney (One Thing)", the first single off their upcoming sophomore album, appropriately titled, Twosomeness . The album, out February 5th via Morr Music, was produced by Alex Somers who's worked with notable Icelanders, Sígur Rós and Jonsí. The single features breathy vocals set to twinkling, undulating keyboard and guitar strokes. A bittersweet song about facing, and eventually accepting, the 'one thing' that can lead everything off course, the sisters sing, "With a tiny heart beating as quietly as [...]

"World Premiere Event! Public screenings on all seven continents. Join Sigur Rós fans from around the world for a unique program of short films." This year Icelandic band Sigur Rós released their sixth album Valtari . The band did something creative called "Valtari Film Experiment". Sigur Rós gave a dozen film makers the same budget and asked them to create whatever comes in to their head when they listen to songs from the band's forthcoming album. The idea is to abandon the usual approval process from Sigur Rós, and allow film [...]

Iceland is a bijou country built upon an infrastructure of inaccurate information that many tend to misinterpret. Those who envision Iceland picture a magical fairyland full of curious creatures, and associate their music based on what they've heard from Björk and artists alike. While it's hard to define the Icelandic music style, many artists have come to embrace a sonic similarity falling under a more natural, orchestral genre. Defining a country so foreign to many is hard to do, but digging into their musical archives definitely helps us understand and appreciate the magic they harbor so magnificently. [...]

A strong, passionate track from the new Defense Family 73, which was recorded in Iceland at a studio owned by Sigur Ros, and the session was even engineered by the band's frontman, Jón Þór Birgisson. Now the song itself delivers SDF's usual combo of loud guitars with a harmonious edge, and the stellar vocals of Patrick Kindlon. Yeah, he's not exactly singing in a traditional sense, but his hybrid of spoken word and emotional shouts are pretty gripping, so are the lyrics. Damn, the story on this track is depressing. Rehab, drugs. It sounds like a terrible, scarring [...]
Four years after their last LP, Sigur Rós finally released their new album Valtari (which literally translates to "steamroller") last May 29th via XL Recordings. To spice things up a little, lead singer Jónsi Birgisson and his mates launched the Valtari mystery film experiment. To put it simply, the band asked a dozen film makers to create short films representing whatever came to their mind when they listened to songs from album, and all this with a strictly limited budget. The video for the entrancingly [...]
