I'm loving this new song "Forever" from Julianna Barwick , off her upcoming album Nepenthe (out August 20 via Dead Oceans). Take a listen below in her album trailer below. Nepenthe is Julianna's third full-length album, which was recorded in Reykjavík, Iceland, in the dark cold days of February. In ancient Greek literature, nepenthe was a magic drug of forgetfulness used to wipe out grief and sorrow. The title suggested itself to Julianna, who experienced a death in her own family in the middle of making the record, but it also refers [...]
We've been away for a bit. Call it what you will – compassionate leave, or whatever else – but it felt good to escape the internet, if only for a brief while. Don't get me wrong – I find music to be the best method of utmost escapism, though there comes a point at which another extraneous tweet re: Random Access Memories accompanied by a panoramic iPhone shot taken from the apex of The Shard may just prick your rage, tip you over the edge and condemn you to the murky dregs of madness. I was getting there on Monday, [...]

Flowers (produced by Sigur Ros' / Jonsi's Alex Somers) is the third album by Icelandic pop artist Sin Fang . In many ways this release is his most accessible to date, filled with bright, textured landscapes that make the album feel beautiful and busy, but never cluttered. "What's Wrong With Your Eyes" is a highlight, and one of the songs I had on repeat. On Wednesday, Sing Fang released the accompanying visuals, and they're no less captivating than the song itself. According to director Mani Sigfsson, "The video is about a man slowly [...]

Icelandic twin sisters Pascal Pinon just released a video for 'Bloom', the new single off ' Twosomeness ', an album produced by Alex Somers ( Sígur Rós , Jonsí ) and filled with delicate melodies and profound lyrics. This new video makes me want to eat candy and cupcakes - not sure it's because of the pastel colours and subtle superimposition of images or because the song makes me so melancholic that I want some comfort food. Either way, this is a truly touching song and a beautifully made video (directed by the Russian photographer Alísa [...]
![SIGUR ROS SOARS IN WITH THEIR NEW SINGLE ‘ISJAKI’ [VIDEO]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4913786_lg.jpg)
With their new album Kveikur approaching, Sigur Rós has released another single to tide millions of eager fans over, this time in the form of a lyric video. Although certainly still dense, "Ísjaki" is a bit brighter and celebratory than the dark material from the album we've heard so far. The percussion is prominent and thundering, acting as a sort of battle cry throughout the song. The strings and Jonsi's vocals create the signature atmosphere that Sigur Rós is well known for - sounding as though they could reach all the way across the [...]

Sigur Rós @ UIC Pavillion, Chicago (4/2/13) Sigur Rós live is unlike any other rock concert experience out there. They begin the night behind a giant screen which projects large silhouette of themselves. The guitar is primarily played using a cello bow. There’s enough backing musicians on stage to perhaps qualify as a small orchestra. Many of the songs are sung in a made-up language nicknamed Hopelandic, the rest in Icelandic (singing a long is not really an option). There’s almost zero crowd interaction from the band at any point. The [...]

Jónsi, Georg and Orri – Iceland's finest liberators of isolated post-rock – are missing a member this spring. Following the departure of longtime keyboardist and musical collaborator Kjartan Sveinsson in January, the band have been touring Valtari of yesteryear across much of the world with an entirely new setup though as ever, a maze of session musicians follow their every step and for this, their latest jaunt, modest string, brass and choir sections converge with the trio onstage. It's upon a deadpan, cold winter breeze that Sigur Rós bring Valtari to Brixton [...]

Úlfur 's new album White Mountain comes out today via the always eclectic Western Vinyl label. The LP mixes postfolk with found sounds & ambient elements. Úlfur is part of ( Sigur Rós side proj) Jónsi 's band, and also Swords of Chaos . White Mountain contain contributions from Alexandra Sauser-Monnig of Mountain Man , Skúli Sverrisson and Sigrún Jónsdóttir. According to Úlfur : Every track is a collage of field-recordings made while travelling. I met [...]

New York duo The Chainsmokers (half of which is D'Anconia , who's already a Caveman Sound favorite) have been making some serious noise lately. Their latest conquest is a remix of a track by the uniquely voiced Jónsi , lead singer of Sigur Ros, with which they've capitalized on the magical vocals, added some huge synths, and transformed the track into an epic, high energy, progressive house anthem. If this embodiment of pure bliss doesn't make you yearn for the summertime, we're not sure what will. We expect nothing but greatness coming from these guys going [...]

Moosic, moosic, moosic The news spread quickly on Saturday evening that the hardworking put-upon staff of HMV stores in Cork, Limerick and Tallaght had vacated the premises having acquired a written guarantee from the administrator that wages owed will be paid on Friday as planned. Fingers crossed now that is the case. Today's playlist is specifically dedicated to all the staff who staged the various sit-ins, with all tracks taken from Icelandic bands seeing as their country has blossomed since showing authorities they simply would no longer put up with their inept [...]

Around this time last year we featured a video entitled "Boxcar Fair" that showcased a collaboration between Atlanta's Little Tybee and kinetic sculptor Tom Haney . Haney has returned with a new video called " Home ." This time the musical accompaniment comes from Jónsi , the singer and guitarist best known for his work with Icelandic post-rock outfit Sigur Rós. It's a solo track entitled "Helinglás" that finds Jónsi's abandoning signature falsetto for a more reserved tenor set against lush arrangements on strings. The video for " Home " is much less complex than "Boxcar [...]

What ended up being both the most surprisingly brilliant set of Harvest was most definitely Sigur Rós ' festival-closing set. The Icelandic four-piece created an ethereal soundscape by means of Jónsi 's signature falsetto and bow-guitar playing, as well as a mini backing orchestra. This ethereal soundscape spread a sort of magic throughout the festival, as festival-goers were entranced, while some were even shedding a few tears (which I may be guilty of...) due to the dramatic euphoria and build-up of the music. There is just something absolutely magical about [...]

all photos by Dave Lichterman There isn't really a great way to describe Sigur Rós ' live shows in writing. It's something that has to experienced in person, not vicariously. Jónsi and co.'s performances could be called "majestic", "sweeping", or "life-affirming", but even those descriptors don't capture the emotional grandeur of a Sigur Rós show. However, if it must be described, it was likely nothing short of "breathtaking" for those that were in attendance at the Icelandic quartet's show on Wednesday. [...]
Another day, another 40,000 fans and two dozen bands. Unlike Friday's EDM, rock and singer-songwriter heavy lineup, today focused more on more pop and indie rock (with the exception of Metallica , of course, who are as hard rock as any band at the festival). Early on, I bounced around from stage to stage catching a few indie buzz-bands. Animal Kingdom , the British three-piece known for their track "Strange Attractor" played a short but fun set with lots of interaction with the fans between songs. San Francisco's own Geographer put on [...]

IJsland is hip, IJsland is modern. Vooral Reykjavik. Vaak irriteert het me.

Sigur Ros is back with the ambient, ultra-ethereal Valtari.
