Today marks the conclusion of Sigur Rós' seven-month long Valtari Mystery Film Experiment . For the 16-part series, the band gave dozens of filmmakers the "same modest budget and asked to create whatever comes into their head when they listen to songs from Valtari ." Some included celebrities , others were much more subtle , and one even so good that we named it among the year's best . The final video in the series is entitled “Leaning [...]

"World Premiere Event! Public screenings on all seven continents. Join Sigur Rós fans from around the world for a unique program of short films." This year Icelandic band Sigur Rós released their sixth album Valtari . The band did something creative called "Valtari Film Experiment". Sigur Rós gave a dozen film makers the same budget and asked them to create whatever comes in to their head when they listen to songs from the band's forthcoming album. The idea is to abandon the usual approval process from Sigur Rós, and allow film [...]

Sigur Rós have released the second-to-last video in their ongoing “Valtari Mystery Film Experiment”. Another spin on “Varúð”, the Björn Flóki-directed clip focuses on a young child as she treks through what appears to be post-apocalyptic destruction and untouched natural habitats. Flóki extrapolated on the video: "When I listen to "Varúð" I feel this overlap and struggle between sadness and beauty, between darkness and light. An overwhelming feeling of being buried in darkness but being just barely able to escape into the light, if you try hard enough. This is the feeling I've tried to bring to the video." As [...]

Did you know Paul McCartney almost died in a helicopter crash recently ? Fortunately, it was avoided, but think about it: How tragic would that have been? Hell, Ringo would have been the last surviving Beatle! Quite a hypothetical, but one that got us thinking, Which rock star's untimely death would leave you completely inconsolable? Also on today's show, Sami recaps a ton of music headlines including Trent Reznor's appearance on Reddit , Blur releasing a new concert album , tour dates for Sigur Rós [...]

Sigur Rós have released another video from their ongoing “Valtari Mystery Film Experiment”. The 14th installment in the series, and the first one for the album's title track, features a man and a woman mimicking each other's dance moves as they come closer together, ultimately becoming one. “I wanted to try and make a dialogue through movement, without anyone saying anything," director Christian Larson explained to Nowness . As previously reported , the band has commissioned a dozen filmmakers to create music videos for the ”Valtari Mystery Film Experiment”. Each filmmaker was given the “same modest budget [...]

Sigur Rós have released another video from their ongoing “Valtari Mystery Film Experiment”, and it’s the second one for the track “Varðeldur”. Whereas Melika Bass' interpretation looked like something straight out of The Ring , Clare Langan and her high-speed camera explore the "fragility of the human condition, frozen somewhere between life and death" by capturing a woman submerged in water. "There is no clear distinction between dream and reality and the space that the film and the music create becomes a submersive world," Langan explains. Watch the video below. As previously reported , the [...]

Sigur Rós held a competition, as part of their “Valtari Mystery Film Experiment” , inviting film makers and video directors to create an original video for one of the tracks off their latest release, Valtari . Today, directors Anafelle Liu, Dio Lau, and Ken Ngan were named the Overall Winner of the Valtari Film Competition for their delicate, somber take on “Fjögur píanó”. According to the director's commentary: " skinned is a restless self sculpturing of one's body. it is a glimpse of the corporeal unconscious, forever trapped in lacan's double sided [...]

As part of their “Valtari Mystery Film Experiment”, Sigur Rós held a competition inviting film makers and video directors to create an original video for one of the tracks Valtari . Today, director Ruslan Fedotow was named the winner of the People's Choice award after crafting one of the series' most simplistic but profound entries with his take on "Dauðalogn". The video explores the interaction between two men in a lonely home leading to one eventually carrying the other through the woods and into a boat down stream. While less plot-driven than the [...]

It's Monday and we have a mish mash of streams, mp3 links, and videos from Andrew Bird, Dana Falconberry, The Eversons, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Miike Snow, Beth Orton, Pack a.d., and Sigur Ros. Andrew Bird - "Three White Horses" from Hands of Glory out October 30 on Mom + Pop Hands of Glory is a musical companion to [...]
The Wire is arguably the best show ever to grace the eyes and hearts of mankind, and Sigur Rós is arguably the best band to create their own singing language from Iceland. Smashing up the two (sorta) might not be immediately obvious, but in retrospect I think it is. Oh, and also this video is bonkers to max... man. Also Game of Thrones is a very very good televised drama program that Aiden Gillen acts very well in.

Sigur Rós have released another video from their ongoing “Valtari Mystery Film Experiment”, and it’s for the track "Ekki múkk". It's the tenth such effort from the series, spanning appropriately ten minutes in length, though it warrants its chunk of time. The video follows the truly remarkable partnership of an estranged Tommy Carcetti (aka Aidan Gillen) and one very wise snail (voiced by UK folk singer Shirley Collins). Director Nick Abrahams pulls from a forthcoming feature film of his, making this "something of a taster." Color this writer excited for what he's got in store later down the road. [...]

Sigur Rós have released another video from their ongoing “Valtari Mystery Film Experiment”, and it’s for the track "Seraph". Created by Dash Shaw and John Cameron Mitchell, the animated clip captures the troubled life of one male character, from his awkward youth to his violent time in prison. Mitchell remains best known for his work writing, directing, and starring in 20012s Hedwig and the Angry Inch , and there's a lot of that similar depressing, gritty surrealism here. Stream it below. As previously reported , the band has commissioned a dozen filmmakers to create music [...]

Sigur Rós have released another video from their ongoing “Valtari Mystery Film Experiment”, and it’s for the track "Dauðalogn" Filmed in the primeval forest of Yakushima, a remote island in southern Japan, director Henry Jun Wah Lee sought to create a "spiritual and meditative journey into nature." "Since the time of our earliest ancestors, nature has been a source for inspiration, imagination, and wisdom. Nature is where we come from. Even in this modern age, its energy still flows through our veins. Being in nature, we see the world our ancestors saw: a place of [...]

The latest installment of their mystery film experiment.

Sigur Rós have released another video from their ongoing “Valtari Mystery Film Experiment”, and it’s the second one for the track “Varðeldur”. Taking performance art to a creepy new level, director Melika Bass crafts something that looks like an extended director's cut of that deadly tape in The Ring . If it weren't for the heavenly strings within "Varðeldur", we'd be running for the remote. As previously reported , the band has commissioned a dozen filmmakers to create music videos for the ”Valtari Mystery Film Experiment”. Each filmmaker was given the “same modest budget and asked [...]
