Classical and compositional music is usually incapable of receiving the same kind of critique as popular music. There is more to contend with as far as the compositional strength, originality, and technique of a piece are concerned whereas an indie album is more often judged on its sound, its immediacy, and its idiosyncrasies. That Olafur Arnalds is treated less like a composer and more like an indie songwriter is probably more the result of his presence and approach to music and less the music itself. So it might be unfair to hold For Now I Am Winter accountable [...]

For those unfamiliar with my Icelandic music fetish, experimental-classical music or that one song he did on The Hunger Games soundtrack, Ólafur Arnalds is a former hardcore drummer gone neo-classical producer who's been quietly acquiring representation as one of the most talented and ethereal musicians from Iceland. His stylistic range is one thing, but his undeniably hypnotic and captivating instrumental work functions on a thematic level so high, it feels as if it couldn't possibly have come from human hands. Past records such as ...and they have escaped the weight [...]
Sweeping, cinematic, vibrant, beautiful, epic, delicate, bold, calm, majestic. It's pretty easy to roll off a list of adjectives for this absolutely wonderful record as Rhian Sheehan returns with the impossibly beautiful and uncompromisingly compelling Stories from Elsewhere. ![Review of Sigur Rós @ Scotiabank Place [March 29, 2013]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4861487_lg.jpg)
I didn't shoot the show but it was amazing to experience their music!! I wasn't expecting on going to this concert on March 29th. But thanks to a friend who had connections, I got to see Sigur Rós play at Ottawa's Scotiabank Place . The last time the band played in Ottawa was 2005 at Bronson Centre. That was a show you couldn't miss back then. Now jump ahead to 2013 with six albums under their belt and a seventh album going to drop on June 13th. The [...]

Halfway through "Festival," a track that initially waves gently to and fro, Jónsi crescendos an "ooooooooh" then lets it fade away. At Boston University's Agganis Arena, that slipping towards stillness was sung past the point of absurdity. Surely there must have been a peddled effect that extended the note, surely that was the case. Or, some unseen sprite must have echoed the haunting vowel past the point of lung capacity. Yet, whatever Íslenska magic formed this surreal tremolo everyone knew what was about to happen- from this momentary silence, a throbbing bass line punched the ethereal into celebration. I've often wondered if Sigur [...]

Justin Timberlake is one of probably five pop singers that equally satisfies the desperate romantic and sonic perfectionist in me. With his god-like confidence, wearing suits for no reason, he charmingly compares women to spaceships and fruity bubblegum; Justin Timberlake is the king of making me feel like I just hit puberty and I can win over the heart of any woman I desire. Returning from the chart-topping, hit-churning 2006 record FutureSex/LoveSounds, we're again graced with the presence of an American entertainment renaissance man with the momentously-released, grandly-produced and expectedly [...]
Jónsi, Georg and Orri – Iceland's finest liberators of isolated post-rock – are missing a member this spring. Following the departure of longtime keyboardist and musical collaborator Kjartan Sveinsson in January, the band have been touring Valtari of yesteryear across much of the world with an entirely new setup though as ever, a maze of session musicians follow their every step and for this, their latest jaunt, modest string, brass and choir sections converge with the trio onstage. It's upon a deadpan, cold winter breeze that Sigur Rós bring Valtari to Brixton [...]
The band blew minds and eardrums // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.

The idea of starting a band actually came up when we were at a rock concert and I whispered to our previous bass player: Oh it would be so cool if we’d be in a band. And she agreed, so we decided to do something about it! Make it a word and a blow. KAPNORTH is more than just a name. KAPNORTH is the ghost, that four musicians from Switzerland create with their compositions. A band that finds its inspiration in the far North, in the pebbly rawness and in the vastness of the branded horizon - and in the never-ending quietness, in the yearning and its unruly power.

Segunda entrega de los mejores 50 discos de 2012, según el equipo de indieHearts : 30. The Smashing Pumpkins - Oceania ¿Cuánto hay de Pumpkins en los actuales Pumpkins? It's been a crazy summer. So crazy I no longer live in Vancouver. Amanda and I have returned to Sydney, Australia for the foreseeable future...more on that later I suppose as the show reviews roll in. But before we left Vancouver we managed to see some shows this summer. First up, we saw Florence + The Machine and The Walkmen at Deer Lake Park back in July. Amanda is a pretty big fan of Florence so this was a show that was definitely her bag. I went along knowing I'd at least [...]

By Sam Cleeve August 6th-10th, 2012 Bestival 2012 was one of polarities. For every joyous, life-affirming Stevie Wonder headline set, there was Borgore around the corner blasting the most depraved bass noises possible. For every beautiful art installation or on-site roller-disco ( truth ), an absolute throng of people in between you and your destination. What can't be faulted is the booking – this year's Bestival genuinely offered an unparalleled summer line-up, one that pitted soul legends against sweeping icelandic cinematic explorations, all the while staying faithful [...]

Words by Ace Ubas, photo by Ana Villarruel When you see a band like Sigur Rós in a cemetery, then you’re not just going to some concert, you’re going for an experience. In fact, whenever bands play the Hollywood Forever Cemetery , they always add some kind of visual or sound installation before the show even begins. When I saw instrumental-rock quartet Explosions in the Sky at the Cemetery last year, visual artists created installations that responded and interpreted songs ...
Another day, another 40,000 fans and two dozen bands. Unlike Friday's EDM, rock and singer-songwriter heavy lineup, today focused more on more pop and indie rock (with the exception of Metallica , of course, who are as hard rock as any band at the festival). Early on, I bounced around from stage to stage catching a few indie buzz-bands. Animal Kingdom , the British three-piece known for their track "Strange Attractor" played a short but fun set with lots of interaction with the fans between songs. San Francisco's own Geographer put on [...]

Since its inception in 1991, Lollapalooza has strived to offer diverse lineups covering all corners of the musical globe and beyond. Born out of the grunge movement, festival founder and mastermind Perry Farrell put together a traveling music festival with some of his best friends. Early lineups featured the likes of Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction. The festival went through a period of inactivity from 1997 until 2002, but was jumpstarted in 2003, though it was very short lived. After canceling the 2004 traveling tour, festival [...]
