As previously reviewed their EP awhile back . Montreal's Suuns has released their full-length album on Secretly Canadian called Zeroes QC. As mentioned before their music is indie minimalist rhythms alterna-synth-rock. Having the dreamy vocals of Ben Shemie mix with the noisy, droning guitars riffs and thumping synth-keyboards. The ten tracks on the album just blew my ears away. Impressive with the production on this album. The two tracks that were on the EP, Arena and PVC sounds so much better on the full-length. If you like the sounds [...]

Going through the e-mails from various publicity/management artist. This one just caught me by surprise. It is the Montreal band Suuns (formerly known as Zeroes). Kind of kicking myself that I missed their show in Ottawa around the spring time back when they were called Zeroes. It features members of: Ben Shemie Liam O'Neill (ex-Silver Starling, ex- Young Galaxy ) Max Henry ( Young Galaxy ) Joseph Yarmush ( Land Of Talk ) Apparently the band [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours The members of Silver Starling have merged a medley of musical experiences to form a unique sound that's almost impossible to place into a neat pigeon-hole. The five-piece band is made up Marcus Paquin, lead singer and main songwriter, drummer Liam O'Neill, and Paquin's wife Marika Anthony-Shaw, who plays violin, viola and keyboard. The band is rounded out by bassist Peter X, and Gab Lambert, who plays guitars and banjo. On the heels of the release of their self-titled album, Silver [...]

I've been tracking my favourite songs all year and I literally had a enough to fit two albums worth. This got me thinking that next year I may produce a multi-volume "best of". I agree with G.R.O. that this year left no shortage of quality tracks and I hope that you enjoy some of my faves. A Healthy Serving of 2009 (Download here ) Settler - Balmorhea Havin' My Baby - Think About Life You Go On Ahead (Trumpet [...]

Here is part four of my best of Canadian albums of 2009. Silver Starling - Silver Starling Saw them at Bands Undone and they were amazing. Best tracks are Something Over Nothing, Ghosts and This Is Not A Dream Outside Love - Pink Mountaintops Love the description of the album which says: " "Outside Love" is ten songs of love and hate that read [...]

Filed under: News , Electronic , You Oughta Know , Canada Marcus Paquin, mastermind behind CMJ -breakout act Silver Starling , is an emo kid at heart. It's not that he's into black eyeliner and skinny jeans, but in that he isn't afraid to express his emotions. "I've never been able to help myself. When I listen to a record that moves me, I'm the guy who's covering his face because he's bawling or laughing out loud," Paquin tells Spinner over the phone from Montreal, [...]

BTA was recently invited to participate in Bands Undone , a series of stripped-down shows at Ottawa's Canteen Art Shop & Gallery . The first of which featured Sudbury's Meadowlark Five , a six-piece group with several members sharing lead vocals, backed by orchestral rock arrangements. Their set was well-executed and came off sounding quite good. Their cohesive sound shines far and above their recorded tracks. Several of the recorded tracks run upwards of five minutes, with the lead singer's voice overpowering all other instruments. Fortunately, when heard live, [...]

This was another great event on November 7th. The second instalment of Bands Undone at Canteen happened and they had the Montreal band Silver Starling . It was nice enough to have the band do a small session and do some Q&A with some media people and bloggers. Since it was the same night they opened up for Ohbijou. They sang three song off from their debut self-titled album. It was a nice intimate acoustic session. Surprised the band used up the whole art room. But I got my [...]

Photo from their Myspace page. Just announced today. On Saturday November 7th, the Montreal band Silver Starling will be making an appearance for Canteen's Bands Undone *. They will be doing a Q&A and small intimate session at 5pm. The band just released their self-titled album on Last Gang Records. Members consist of: Marcus Paquin Liam O'Neill Marika Shaw Peter X Gab Lambert If you are from the media or a music blogger [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Canada The small stage of Cake Shop on New York's Lower East Side may have not been the most ideal place for Canadian indie rock quintet Silver Starling to perform their CMJ showcase Wednesday afternoon. The stage, which is located underneath a cafe, was so small that the band members were cramped together, yet they rocked in spite of the space limitations throughout their six-song set . Hailing from Montreal, Silver Starling -- vocalist/guitarist Marcus Paquin, violinist/keyboardist Marika [...]

The weekend was more exhausting than I thought – road trip with the little man, dinners, yard sales, yard work, Steelers late night victory – so I was kind of left high and dry this AM when it came to posting. What's that mean to you, oh loyal reader? Well, another stellar clip show like Quick Hitting road-up where I point you to some Canadian bands that I meant to write about, but just didn't have time. Oddly enough they are both from Montreal but unsurprisingly, they are worth checking out. [...]

Emerging from the wings of the burgeoning Canadian music stage, guitarist, engineer/producer and songwriter Marcus Paquin, is a man ready to take the spotlight. As the creative focal point of the promising Montreal-based indie-pop outfit Silver Starling , Paquin and band have fashioned a self-titled debut that shimmers with brilliantly conceived, skillfully executed art-pop: smart music that also knows how to move...and why. Maybe it's all that time spent in the studio producing and engineering chums like Arcade Fire (his wife and fellow Starling Marika Anthony-Shaw is a touring AF member), but Paquin makes Silver Starling, arriving [...]
Wow! What a response we had to that last post about The Twelves remixes. You turned up in your droves for that one. Thanks! Hope you enjoyed it. Now it's back to the traditional section, showcasing a handful of bands that get our Recommender tick of approval. MODERNAIRE This 4-piece have been busily touring, remixing and, when they get the chance, actually releasing their own records, such as the wry and infectious ' Faites Les Jeux ', (listed below). It's a wonderful synth driven [...]
45 000 people. That's how many showed up for this year's festivities. Readily beating the 28 000 that showed up last year. Coldplay had a lot to do with this number obviously and it's probably because of them that we may see another edition next year but I'd like to think the rest of the schedule was enticing enough for [...]
At long last, the Ontario (not Toronto's) Virgin Music Festival lineup has been unveiled. It shall go down August 29-30. Goodbye Toronto Islands Park, hello Burl's Creek! which is near Orillia, Ontario, down highway 400, an hour trek from downtown Toronto ... or so i'm told. The reason for the move? "We've always wanted to bring the European festival experience to Canada," says [...]

MySpace So here we go. Some four months after I'd originally expected to see it in my inbox and after much rumour-mongering, hand-wringing, bitching and moaning, it's here. The lineup for Toronto's - sorry, Ontario's - Virgin Festival 2009 . It's far and away the most mixed bag of nuts yet, with names guaranteed to both delight and confound, no matter what you're into. So really, the question is this; is this lineup enough to get you out to Burl's Creek park near Orillia and camp for two or three [...]
