It's Christmas time and that of course means the annual Christmas party. This year as well as the work do we were invited to Radio 1's Festive Festival at the legendary BBC Maida Vale, featuring some of 2009's hottest stars and some of 2010's rising luminaries - Marina and the Diamonds , Enter Shikari , Plan B , Simian Mobile Disco , The xx , Mumford and Sons and [...]

Artwork by the talented and generous Adam Sarpalius . The final list is here. We have been working on this Absolute (sarcasm) Best Songs of 2009 list all year, updating it at the end of every quarter. I was only going to have PMA's Top 50 of the year listen, but I couldn't narrow it down beyond the top 75. This list will represent and acknowledge some of the artists I felt had to be left out of our Best Albums of 2009 list. As always, I upheld only one rule [...]

10. Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More "It was fantastic to hear this multi-instrumental folk band go through the stages . Seeing them in May for the first time supporting the Maccabees, in July at Oxegen festival, then in August at Field Day Festival, their progression was phenomenal. By the time I saw them for their headline tour in October, the band were brimming with confidence to match their ever-present talents. They finished the year by bringing out one brilliantly produced LP . With songs like 'Sigh No More', 'Dustbowl Dance' and [...]
10. Passion Pit - The reeling To be honest, it's Manners is just a great album so it's hard to pick a favourite. Sleepyhead would probably get the nod but it's technically from 2008 so I went for the next best. 9. YACHT - Psychic city This song made me smile by far the most in 2009. Fact. I recommend the entire album but this is the pick of the bunch. 8. Bat for Lashes - Daniel Twice Mercury-nominated [...]

James Ford and James Shaw twist and turn together ornate vases topped with delicate bordering outerweaving the inner rims of a thin and susceptible frame of reference. That didn't make sense for the same reason that their music makes you dance. Simian Mobile Disco really does cares about its mobility; even though there's enough action in the audience to distract even the most avid dancer, nothing can compare to watching the duo unfold electronic rhythms in a [...]
Absolutely remarkable! 10/10. View all dates on their NA journey here. View more photos & download a SMD tune AFTER THE JUMP... MP3: Simian Mobile Disco - Audacity Of Huge (Naum Gabo Mix)

One of my most anticipated gigs came and went this weekend, without a doubt living up to it's potential. When the Hotcakes boys bought tickets to see Simian Mobile Disco , we were very excited, but our heart rate quickened at the discovery that it was being held at the epicentre of the Birmingham rave scene, Rainbow Warehouse. But that was nothing compared to the explosive rise in adrenaline levels on finding out that we had inadvertently bought tickets to witness the who's who of bezzler DJs in support of the duo. We [...]
Invasion The Master Alchemist This Is Music 04 October 2009 by Hugh Platt You know those nights out when suddenly it’s 4AM and you’re standing in a field with some people you don’t know and there’s some naked girls dancing round a fire and you have no idea how you got there? Yeah, that’s what the debut album [...]

Simian Mobile Disco - Temporary Pleasure Following up from the highly acclaimed Attack Decay Sustain Release was always gonna be hard, but after having heard tracks like 'Audacity Of Huge', I think myself, amongst others, thought that there was a possibility that SMD's second album could possibly be almost as good as the first. Most of you who've read reviews though will probably find this isn't the case, and tbh, even though it definitely isn't as good as the first, I still found it highly enjoyable. Reviews in the 50's/100 etc I find pretty harsh, though [...]

I was looking super forward to Simian Mobile Disco (James Ford and Jas Shaw's) new release, Temporary Pleasure , since the acclaimed Attack Decay Sustain Release infected electronic enthusiasts two years ago. Staying within familiar formulas, their first release "10 000 Horses Can't Be Wrong" reminded me a lot of "Sleep Deprivation", a track made for Ibiza . Temporary Pleasure as the name suggests, is a short 41 minute 10 track pithy album featuring Beth Ditto (The Gossip), Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), and Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals). More after the jump! [...]

This week sees the return of the godfathers of the Brit remix, Simian Mobile Disco as they unleash their second LP proper, Temporary Pleasure, a record brimming with cameos from underground heroes, cold-shoulder strobing synths and their most mashed trash hit since Sleep Deprivation. Giving in to the commercialist ways of the world this ain't but just how Temporary is the Pleasure this time around? Blasting off into orbit is opener Cream Dream, with its spiralling, surreal loops bouncing frenetically off of Gruff Rhys' forever divine vocals. Lyrically, there's not a golden retriever nor snow-tipped Japanese mountain in [...]

As we creep closer and closer to the end of the summer that seemed to have never really came there was always something that seemed to miss from the Summer of 09. It is about 90 outside today and these days will come few and far between. I have a rare night off of work [...]
Don't say you didn't see this one coming. With a phonebook that includes many of indie's glitterati, James Ford and Jas Shaw were always going to be able to pull in some impressive names for their second Simian Mobile Disco album. So, in-between Ford's production duties for Arctic Monkeys, Florence and the Machine and the Last Shadow Puppets and Ford's new role as a father, the duo managed to knock up an impressive follow-up to 2007's Attack Decay Sustain Release that works as a great dance record without becoming swamped by its guestlist. That [...]

From their huge anthems of 2007, Simian Mobile Disco have come on a long way from “Attack Decay Sustain Release”. Their forthcoming release, “Temporary pleasure” offers plenty of pleasure, though it is far from temporary I hope. Their debut was a fun, funky and just about guaranteed to have you dancing like a loon ‘till the wee hours. Tongue in cheek, it was the soundtrack to my summer two years ago, and still sounds immense. With this new collection of tracks, SMD have moved towards a selection of more [...]
“Audacity of Huge” has been floating around for some time now but the single is finally getting a physical release now. It is the first single from their upcoming guest heavy album “Temporary People.” The track features Chris Keating from Yeasayer. This single shows the band shifting into something slightly more mainstream. The first thing [...]

Today marks the beginning of the second half of 2009. We've had a marvelous 6 months full of great music and it's time to update my list of the Absolute Best Songs of 2009 . Well, it's not really fair to call this an update really - I completely tossed out the old list and started up a new one from scratch. I didn't stop at the top 10 either - this list spans the 50 songs that I believe are the best of the year, so far. But like the first list, [...]

The fire hath cometh - thronging crowds of people lined up to a day which was suppose to have double the attendance of the previous day . I was prepared to hack my way through bros and e-tards like Marlow through the dank and desolate jungle of Conrad's Heart of Darkness. I had gotten to Exposition Park right as Cosmic Gate was starting at 6pm and then left the place when Paul Van Dyk closed the main stage at 4 am. Ten hours of joyful electronica seeping through my skin and tickling every organ in my tired [...]
