Shocking to probably many of you, Less Than Jake is still around and cranking out ska. Even more shocking to most of you, that music is still pretty damn good. Now I know that ever since they abandoned ska with their erhm ... pop-friendly In With The Out Crowd that they lost a lot of their older fans, including myself. However they had a return to form with their 2008 release of GNV FLA that was incredibly solid, and let me go ahead and say that their compilation [...]

Reel Big Fish were one of my first loves in terms of music. The live album was one of my favourite albums that I could probably sing every lyric to every song, and after not listening to them in a long time, I had forgotten how good the Californian band really were. Saturday was a wonderful reminder. Kicking off with 'E... Read more..
Imperial Leisure Death To The One Trick Pony Steamroller Ltd 26 March 2012 by Tom Doyle It's funny how sometimes one bands breakthrough into the relative mainstream can remind everyone of something that was always good but that has simply fallen out of fashion. The King Blues rise and rise has thrown a fresh light onto the UK's ska punk scene and kids are once again digging out their parents old Trojan Records box sets and embracing the brass. That can [...]

I had the good fortune to see the ska-punk band Mustard Plug play in Toledo, OH recently, at Frankie's Inner City. They're a Grand Rapids, MI-based band, so it was odd for me - a Michigan resident - to see them out of state. One of the people I went with has seen them six times in the past, once only 30 minutes away from our podunk little town, so it felt a little foolish to drive 3 hours out of state for a show. Still, I'm a big ska fan, so it was worth it. It was also interesting [...]
The documentary Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone flirts with a balance between history and character as it looks behind the scenes at a group that failed to achieve large-scale commercia... Continue reading "Fishbone's Ska-Punk Casts A Long Shadow In New Film" >
There are several things that most people associate with music bloggers; either we're super arrogant about our tastes, or just have loads of free time and connections. For the most part, I think people tend to put me in the first category, considering I have a full-time job that isn't this web site, but I feel like I always have to justify myself, proving I'm not a snob. I'm pretty sure my love for this genre establishes my inability to escape mockery in all instances. It's true, I love ska/ska-punk, whatever you call it. I spent loads of weekends as [...]

This is a repost from 4/20 a couple of years ago. My thinking goes along the following lines: - I always kinda liked this post; - I can't be arsed to dig up five or six more songs about weed; - If you're really celebrating 4/20, you probably don't remember I've posted this before. Also note that Nirvana's "Marijuana" is likewise known by the name "Moist Vagina." ~~~~~ I’ve been more or less responsible all day, so it’s time to go ahead and roll out (roll [...]

In case you haven’t been keeping up with Sublime, the band’s name has been coming up a lot lately. Unfortunately, it’s been in the context of a courtroom as drummer Bud Gaugh and bassist Eric Wilson have battled with Brad Nowell’s estate over use of the Sublime name. To quickly bring you up to speed, Wilson, Gaugh, and singer/guitarist Rome Ramirez performed last month as Sublime at the Smokeout Festival in California. They were immediately hit with a threatened lawsuit from Nowell’s estate. “Out of respect for Brad's wishes," Nowell's representatives said in a statement, [...]

Is it too late for third wave or too soon for fourth wave? Either way, it’s good to know ska-punk survives. I can’t put a finger on what it is that appeals to me about ska and ska-punk but doesn’t appeal to me about real reggae. But that’s how it goes and I guess I’ll have to live with that shortcoming. I recently got an email and a CD from an Irish ska-punk band called Chewing on Tinfoil. As they say in the song “Hating Every Minute,” “We sing these [...]
